Review: OCS, aka Orinoka Crash Suite, is one of the lesser-used musical incarnations fronted by voraciously hard-working Californian John Dwyer. While retaining his love of the fantastical, imaginary and otherworldly, Dwyer's 20th album 'Memories Of A Cut Off Head' is in stark musical contrast to the frenetic garage-rock output of his usual formation Thee Oh Sees. Working with long-term friend and bandmate Brigid Dawson, he's crafted a surprisingly tranquil and reflective record of strange folk-psychedelia, made stranger still by Dwyer's broad use of instrumentation, ranging from lush string arrangements, through harpsichord and musical saw, to Radiophonic Workshop style synthesis. The revival of the OCS moniker was long overdue, but after twelve years thrashing out incendiary garage-rock, this weird and impressive oasis of calm reminds us of Dwyer's musical depth, and that he doesn't always have to concuss to be convincing.

Review: It may only be January, but we already have a firm contender for time warp classic of 2017 here - this self-titled debut from Once & Future Band, somewhat contrary to their very name, is a veritable smorgasbord of sugary '70s prog-pop, indeed the kind of thing that Jeff Lynne continues to have fever dreams about to this very day. The harmonies here may bring to mind The Beach Boys, yet this meticulously constructed yet never precious album triumphs through its ability to conjure up an expansive and wonder-filled era of sonic grandstanding without ever sounding like tired retro pastiche. It's almost enough to have one wondering how that Jimmy Carter presidency will work out.

Review: Despite their garage-rock and psych-rock roots, Thee Oh Sees have always been a far funkier proposition than many of their contemporaries. In many ways, they're only upholding the traditions of the San Francisco scene, which since the late sixties has consistently blurred the boundaries between blues, funk, soul, psych-rock and harder forms of guitar music. They're at it again on new album Smote Reverser, a set that gleefully charges between funkier fare, revivalist hippy-era garage rock and the kind of intense, guitar-laden workouts that will have mosh pit lunatics jumping for joy.

Review: John P. Dwyer has been lancing eardrums with Thee Oh Sees in an ever-escalating flurry of records for the past six years. Since the release of "The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In" announced a new loud era (and excepting a few momentary detours into home-baked territory - "Dog Poison" and "Castlemania", for example - Dwyer and company have pummeled a bit harder each time out, cementing their reputation as a live force to be reckoned with and leaving legions sweaty and bruised in the process. Late last year, after years of relentlessly touring the world, the word got out... Dwyer's moving to Los Angeles (fear not, still California!) and Thee Oh Sees are taking a much-needed hiatus with a shifting of gears ahead and a new album on the way. This is that album.

"Drop" was recorded in a banana-ripening warehouse with hair-farming studio warlock Chris Woodhouse playing drums; it's also graced with the presence of talented gurus Mikal Cronin, Greer McGettrick and Casafis adding horns and vocals. The result pushes the familiar polarities of the group farther outward than ever before. Opener "Penetrating Eye" might be the heaviest Oh Sees song yet, "Transparent World" and "Put Some Reverb On My Brother" foam with seasick fuzz, and yet the ballads, like the harpsichorded "King's Nose" and the lush and stately closer "The Lens," extend their oeuvre into mellotronic, far-out pop with delicacy and grace. This schizophrenia heralds the man and the band into an unseen future in classic Dwyer fashionirestless energy harnessed into exquisitely crafted jams, with an emphasis on the pensive and the paranoid in turns.

Review: Just in case anyone was missing Thee Oh Sees a mere three months after their triumphant last effort 'A Weird Exits', they've already managed to bang out another album, seemingly even managing to top the workrate of the '60s icons who are their sonic precursors. Yet 'An Odd Entrances' is by no means cut from the same cloth as its furious and full-on predecessor, being rather a reflective and comparatively mellow departure that takes in the more off-kilter and restrained moments that have always been the yang to the yin of their garage blowouts. Testimony to the warm heart lurking within this reckless institution, 'An Odd Entrances' proves this band excel just as much at beguiling nocturnal visions as overheated amplifiers.

Review: John Dwyer is rapidly approaching the level of modern-day icon, after years of hammering out the jams in insalubrious basements with the likes of Coachwhips, The Hospitals, Yikes and around 467 other bands. Thee Oh Sees may remain his most accessible outfit to date, but on the evidence of 'A Weird Exits', there's no danger of him diluting his garage-fuelled attack any time soon - indeed, herein he can be found extrapolating the band's trademark fury via trips to the stratosphere awash with psychedelic abandon and krautrock radiance. All told, another triumph for a modern day master in the Spinal Tap-approved fine line between clever and stupid.
