  1. Introspective - "Survive" (8:12)
  2. Jay Mond - "Double Thinking" (6:35)
  3. Sean Bird - "Track 3" (7:04)
  4. Wallflower - "Dove Tales" (7:04)
Review: Jenifa Mayanja continues on with her pursuit of spiritual deep house on her Bu-Maka Records imprint. This time by recruiting various artists in harmony with her labels mission statement. "Survive" by Introspective is all uplifting pads, sultry afro rhythms and restrained 303 squelch; sounds good enough right? Next up is "Double Thinking" by Berlin's Jay Mond, who goes for more of a Detroit, high tech soul exploration. On the flip we have "Track 3" by Sean Bird providing another raw and tight, yet smooth deep house cut. Finally "Dove Tales" by Wallflower channels the dreamy, early nineties aesthetic of Larry Heard.

Review: For the last half-decade, Connecticut-based Jenifa Mayanja has quietly been developing a deeply personal take on house music that offers a feminine twist on the global grooves of Joe Claussel and Osunlade. This second full-length offers a chance to revel in that sound, a pleasingly soft focus mix of broken and 4/4 rhythms, emotion-rich jazz pianos, subtle African percussion and dewy-eyed electronics. Woman Walking In The Shadows also highlights Mayanja's other great strength: ideas. From the sleazy sax grooves of "All Things Being Equal" to the impeccable downtempo jazz of "Rising Out of the Ashes" via sleepy deep house and afro-leaning broken beat, Mayanja barely pauses for breath.

  4. Marco Nega - "Hang In There"
Review: Ugandan-born, Connecticut-based Jenifa Mayanja has been quietly building her Bu-Mako Recordings over the past seven years, mainly with her own recordings of dubby, broken deep house productions. On the Undersoul EP she undertakes a rare split release for the label, alongside the talents Marco Nega. The A-side features the vocal cut "You Will Stay", a dreamy combination of beatdown house and warm Afropop influences; its joined by a "Beats-A-Lot" version which strips the original right back into something considerably more driving, whilst keeping the playful nature of the original. On the flip, Nega offers two tracks that very much complement Mayanja's style; "Tribes Of Morgana" takes a particularly Mr Fingers inspired bassline and contrasts it with jangling chimes and a floaty rhythm, while "Hang In There" is a more driving number, with skittering garage percussion combined with its otherworldly vocal and chord combo.

Review: Jenifa Mayanja has always had a singular vision for her Bu-Mako Recordings imprint. Without shouting about it, Mayanja's label has built up a quietly impressive catalogue of elegant deep house, rich, ultra-deep outings and melodious, dancefloor-friendly groovers. This has always been best heard on the label's occasional Sound Dig Series compilations, which gather together tracks from their growing family of artists. This third instalment continues where its predecessors left off, mixing the rolling deep house jack of Sean Bird, the heady fluidity of Mayanja's own productions, and the metallic throb of Jay Mond, with a range of deliciously glassy-eyed compositions from Wallflower, Introspective and Alison Marks.
