Review: Building on his Brownswood debut earlier this year - "Go See" on the label's deep-digging We Out Here collection - Ezra Collective's pianist and composer lays down his most expansive and expressive body of work to date. Weighing in at near album size, it's a powerful experience from the off as Afrikan Revolution's Asheber sets a political framework and sense of freshness and unity on the title track. Elsewhere we're treated to hazy bluesy hip-hop on "Ragify", raw freeform fizz on "London's Face" and soul-soothing narratives in the form of "Mollison Dub". Stunning.

Review: Having enjoyed a help in hand courtesy of the Arts Council-funded "Future Bubblers" project and mentor Esa (whose Afro-synth band he played in), Forest Law has graduated to the Brownswood Recordings roster. The producer and multi-instrumentalist has a wide palette of influences, but is particularly interested in West African and Brazilian music. These inspirations naturally come to the fore on this inspired debut, which gathers together three tracks bristling with effervescent Latin-percussion, Afrobeat-influenced grooves, Afro-synth electronics and vocals - presumably provided by the artist himself - that sound a little like Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor. It's an alluring blend that results in three fine cuts, of which A-side "New Thoughts New Eyes" - a future dancefloor classic, we reckon - being the pick of a very strong bunch.

Review: Brownswood present another crucial talent meshing jazz with neo-soul, hip-hop, beats and well just about everything on the path to originality. Kassa Overall doesn't really sound like anyone else - he's got his own distinctive touch that gets loose and limber with the samples and instrumentation, but holds everything together with a smoky haze that makes it so easy to sink back into. The players on the album spill out with an effortless flow, while Overall cuts a laid back yet vulnerable figure on the mic. It's highly personal and built with wings to soar, like peering through the window of a bedroom studio and catching the artist levitating mid-flow. Watch this talent, he's set to take off.

Review: On her two previous albums, 2011's Until Tomorrow and 2013's If You Knew Her, Zara McFarlane was happy to plough a fairly traditional furrow, delivering songs that joined the dots between jazz and modern soul. On Arise, she confidently breaks those shackles, instead serving up at set that looks to Rotary Connection, Sun Ra, traditional African music, loved-up reggae and even doo-wop for inspiration. While jazz and soul remain at the centre of McFarlane's approach, this new widescreen vision only enhances her music. Put simply, Arise is the sort of album you'd expect from a top-notch artist with decades in the game behind her, rather than someone who is still earning her stripes. In other words, it's a brilliant breakout album.

Review: Zara McFarlane is at the heart for he bustling and vital jazz scene in and around the UK and this new album very much pushes the boundaries of the sound. It is a skilled work that shows real growth, with plenty of spiritual and folk influences as well as plenty of her ancestral Jamaican heritage. There are moments of pain and darkness next to more empowering tunes and rousing grooves, with cult South London based producers Kwake Bass and Wu-lu helping McFarlane to realise her sound. This fourth record is another rich and rewarding pallet of sound from one of the UK's most essential artists.

Review: This debut album from Jo'burg via Doncaster's Skinny Pelembe comes with a weight of expectation. The distinctive soul maverick has been turning heads with his output on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings for the past two years, and now he's come good on the promise of those singles and EPs with a wonderful, many-sided LP that oozes personality, depth, and a dusty, hand-wrought musicality that hits on an instinctive level. There are flurries of broken beats, low slung wood-carved percussion, rugged neo soul and weather-beaten funk aplenty, with the lines between organic and electronic beautifully blurred. This album deserves to be huge, positioning Pelembe as a vital new talent in the vanguard of UK soul music.

Review: If you copped last year's debut single, you'll be aware that STR4TA is an early '80s Brit-funk-inspired collaboration between Gilles Peterson and Incognito main man Jean-Paul Maunick (AKA Bluey). Aspects, their debut album, further expands on this Atmosfear-inspired template, flitting between up-tempo, jazz-dance friendly floor-fillers (see the inspired title track and Latin-tinged 'Vision 9'), rubbery jazz-funk workouts, soulful future sing-alongs and the kind of slick, synth-sporting fare that manages to be both deliciously loved-up and pleasingly glassy-eyed. With the experienced Maunick providing much of the instrumentation (including some Pat Metheny-esque jazz guitar work), the album is as musically rich and expansive as it is energetic and authentically free-wheeling. In a word: essential.

Review: Brownswood's latest must-check offering gathers together fresh musical inspirations and jazz mutations from South Africa, shining a light on some of the country's most forward-thinking musicians. The set was curated by pianist/songwriter Thandi Nithuli and Siyabonga Mthembu of psychedelic jazz-rock fusionists Brother Moves On, a pair whose disparate musical approaches and open-minded attitude successfully shaped the album's eclectic, fluid flow. Highlights are plentiful, from the deep downtempo jazz-souk of 'Umthandazo Wamagenge' by Brother Moves On and the discordant, dubbed-out post-rock/jazz fusion of Wretched's 'What is History' (featuring black panther Kwame Toure and Winnie Mandela), to the warming acoustics of Sibusile Xaba's 'Umdali' and the organic, exotic spiritual jazz opus that is Iphupho L'ka Biko's 'Abaphezelu'.Simply stunning.

Review: South African jazz-influenced sounds take the lead on this new companion from the tireless Brownswood label. The collection explores the linage of the sounds and communities who helped it evolve as is spread across the country meaning plenty of subtle synths are taken in. The eclecticism is what makes this so essential as the music ranges from the hugely spiritual (from The Brother Moves On) to more late night and inmate (tasks to a fine entry from Sibusile Xaba) via the neo-soul drenched styles of Thandi Ntuli's beautiful 'Dikeledi' which is a particular highlight.

Review: We Out Here, Brownswood Recordings' latest compilation, was born out of a desire by label boss Gilles Peterson to capture the essence of London's contemporary jazz scene. To ensure a sense of there "here and now", Peterson invited some of the city's brightest young bands and musicians into the studio in August 2017, recording the results over three action-packed days. The resulting never-heard-before tracks are, for the most part, joyous and thrilling, and range from trad jazz, jazz-funk and Latin jazz to acoustic-electronic fusions and groovy, guitar-laden downtempo explorations. It feels like a glimpse of a scene on the rise, and we wouldn't be surprised if many of those involved become modern British jazz greats in the years to come.

Review: As anyone who's visited the city will tell you, Melbourne's underground music scene is particularly vibrant. While it's the more club-focused side of the scene that's previously had most props, "Sunny Side Up" attempts to shine a light on the more soulful and jazzy side of the city's output with the assistance of musical director Silentjay. It's a rich, evocative and musically expansive set that moves from the languid, sun-kissed jazz bliss of Phil Stroud's "Banksia", to the spiritual jazz brilliance of Allysha's "Orbit", via carefully crafted cuts that touch on rubbery 1970s jazz-funk (Dufresne's superb "Pick Up/Galaxy"), rushing broken beat/jazz fusion (Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange), house-influenced dancefloor jazz (Horatio Luna) and drowsy downtempo beats (the languid "There Is No Time" by Kuzich).

Review: Brownswood Recordings has high hopes for this debut album from the previously unheralded Yussef Kamaal, which brings together hyped producer Kamaal Williams (AKA Henry Wu) and fast-rising Afrobeat drummer Yussef Dayes. With such talent to draw on, you'd expect Black Focus to be rather good. Happily, it is, with the duo delivering a typically London-centric take on jazz funk. That means that they take as much inspiration from the work of Kaidi Tatham as, say, Herbie Hancock. The key to the album's success - and, yes, it is generally as special as Gilles Peterson suggests - is the fluid combination of Dayes' brilliant drumming and Williams' superb synth solos and effortlessly groovy Rhodes playing.

Review: There have been plenty of column inches devoted to this collaborative debut album from hyped producer Kamaal Williams (AKA Rhythm Section International sort Henry Wu), and fast-rising Afrobeat drummer Yussef Dayes. With such raw talent to choose from, it's little surprise to find that Black Focus is as good as the critics claim. Their sound is distinctive: a London-centric take on jazz-funk that's loose, rich, organic and shot through with soul. Their major influences seem to be the work of West London broken beat pioneer Kaidi Tatham, and his inspiration, jazz-funk legend Herbie Hancock. These touchstones, combined with Dayes' brilliant drumming and Williams' superb synth solos and jammed-out Rhodes lines, makes Black Focus a hugely alluring set.
