  4. Blackamix Story (4:02)
Review: D. Maximillian only put out one album, and that was My Story in 1994. It remains a crucial collection of dubs and now the lead single from it gets its own standalone release on this red hot 12". 'My Story' has aimless vocal ad libs that suggest a sense of yearning over steel plated digital drums and plucked bass that is rugged and subtly funky. There's an Capella included as well as a dub, and then finally a nice tripped out version 'Blackamix Story' which has you picturing someone leant over a desk and working the knobs and levels hard.

Rise Again
Cat: BLK 038. Rel: 15 Sep 20
Dub
  1. Anthony Simba - "Rise Again" (3:50)
  2. Mixman - "Rise Again I-Sion" (Mixman dub Section) (3:43)
Review: Of late, Blakamix boss Dennis 'Mixman' Bedeau has offered up a number of reissues of killer cuts from his extensive back catalogue. He's at it again here too, delivering a re-press of his 2012 production for Anthony Simba, 'Rise Again'. The A-side original version is a typical digi-reggae excursion, with Simba singing sweetly and soulfully over crunchy machine drums, colourful synthesizer lines and, most surprisingly, 80s style Fairlight sampler orchestral stabs (as used in thousands of synth-pop records over the years). Bedeau strips out most of Simba's vocal on flipside workout 'Rise Again I-Son', a near perfect digi-dub excursion that's not only weighty and delay-laden, but also makes use of some deeper and hazier synthesizer sounds.

  11. Jah Is My Defender (4:02)
  12. Vanguard I-Sion (3:49)
Review: Throughout this year, long-serving British dub and reggae producer Dennis "Mixman" Budeau has been dipping into his archives and offering up new pressings of overlooked or sort-after releases. The latest to get the treatment is Robbie Valentine's 2003 full-length Jah is My Defender. A digital dub era re-imagining of roots reggae, it sees Budeau and Valentine flit between attractive, soulful vocal numbers and seriously heavy, steppers style dub versions for the dances. It's a blend that works really well, with Valentine's sweet and breezy vocal cuts being contrasted by Budeau's wickedly tough, speaker-bothering dubs.
