Review: Given that Amp Fiddler's last solo album dropped way back in 2006, it would be fair to say that Motor City Booty has been a long time coming. It sees the legendary Detroit based vocalist, musician and producer join forces with London's Yam Who for a set that successfully draws on the best of both artists' styles. So while Fidder's dusty, soulful vocals and rich keys take centre stage, they're surrounded by beats and musical elements closer to Yam Who's greatest obsessions: namely P-funk, boogie, deep house and disco. Admittedly, these are styles close to the Detroiter's heart, too, but this is arguably the first time that he's explored them extensively. The results are predictably impressive.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. Superficial (Mark E remix) (7:47)
  2. Superficial (Judge Funk remix) (4:48)
  3. Steppin' (Qwestlife remix) (6:56)
  4. Steppin' (original mix) (4:37)
Review: When they decided to commission remixes of Amp Fiddler's recent - and undeniably excellent - Motor City Booty album, Midnight Riot cast the net far and wide. They've gathered together the results on an expansive album - available on digital download - and a string of vinyl EPs. This first wax installment boasts reworks of two album tracks: "Superficial", and "Steppin". Mark E steals the show with his remix of the former, placing the Detroit veteran's sterling vocal over a dreamy, hypnotic deep house groove. Similarly inspired - to our ears, at least - is Qwestlife's bustling flipside of "Steppin", which re-casts the rolling, organic house original (also included) as a jaunty chunk of two-step garage/synth-boogie fusion.

Review: Black Riot Records: the tougher brother of Midnight Riot Records is a larger than life house label with an array of artists and producers from around the globe. Whether it be deep, electronic, jacking or jazzy: you've come to the right party. Irresistible business which has brought you the likes of Eli Escobar, Amp Fiddler and Thatmanmonkz. Buckley kicks off the A side here with the sexy vocal house jam "Rendition". Not forgetting Mickey Oliver's "Just A Tease" featuring Russoul on the B side which dives deeper on this smooth late night journey with yet more powerful vocals, plus Hypnotic Lovers next up on remix duty. Solid release!

  2. FSQ - "Shaking My Damn Head" (feat Dolette McDonald) (4:47)
  3. Perdu - "Cece" (6:32)
  4. South Beach Recycling - "Bongo Man" (5:00)
Review: Midnight Riot's recently-released Riot In Lagos compilation paid tribute - in some style, we should add - to the enduring influence of African music on contemporary dance culture. This sampler 12" gathers together four of the most sought-after cuts from the digital-only set. Drop Out Orchestra kick things off with the fuzzy guitars, glistening solos, relentless handclaps and bongo-heavy drum rhythms of Candido tribute "Jin Go La", before FSQ deftly fuse Afro-disco and electrofunk on dancefloor stomper "Shaking My Damn Head". On the flip you'll find the breezy, Balearic-influenced Afro-disco fluidity of Perdu's "Cece", and the sun-kissed juju business of South Beach Recycling's fabulous "Bongo Man".

Review: The UK's favourite disco, boogie and house explorers Midnight Riot serve up another compilation entitled 'Le Spank' featuring a host of legendary producers from the scene, alongside some of the hottest rising stars from the underground. There really are some great jams on here: NYC act Odyssey receive brilliant extended edit by Glaswegian legend Al Kent on "Inside Out", a neon lit boogie down version of Tonbe's "Saturday" by London duo Yam Who? plus a deep down and dirty remake of the legendary Detroit anthem "Shari Vari" by Uomnamas: remixed by Hifi Sean and being the standout track on the B side.
