Review: Ethio-jazz legend Hailu Mergia is arguably one of Awesome Tapes From Africa's biggest success stories. After discovering that he was now driving a taxi in Washington, D.C, label boss Brian Shimkovitz reissued some of his old recordings before encouraging the keyboardist and accordion player to make new music. Mergia has been on the rise ever since. "Yene Mircha" is his second new album for ATFM and was recorded with a cast list of guest musicians, including mesenqo player Setegn Atanew, vocalist Tsehay Kassa, and saxophonist Moges Habte. It's surprisingly musically diverse, drawing together elements of jazz-funk, ethio-jazz, more up-tempo Ethiopian dance music and, perhaps most surprisingly of all, both dub and reggae.

Review: As a member of several chart-topping groups and an in-demand producer in his own right, Thami Mdluli was something of a superstar on South Africa's "bubblegum" scene during the 1980s. Yet as the decade progressed, it was for his club-focused instrumentals - released under the Professor Rhythm alias - that he became most celebrated. By the time this album was first released in 1995, he'd helped to develop the now celebrated "Kwaito" style of house-influenced South African dancefloor fusion. Bafana Bafana does contain some distinctive kwaito moments, but for the most part it just sounds like a gloriously South African take on mid 1990s U.S, Italian and British house music. Crucially, it's also superb, like some long lost '90s house album made in Jo'burg, rather than New Jersey.

Review: By 1988, South African producer "Om" Alex Khaoli had left his Afro-rock and Afro-soul past behind and was focused on his pioneering, synths-and-drum-machines-laden "bubblegum" project, Umoja. It was at this point that the ever-changing collective released 707, a mini-album whose four tracks all reached number one on the South African pop charts. As this Awesome Tapes From Africa reissue proves, it remains a fine set. We're particularly enjoying the bold synth riffs, elastic bass and breezy vocals of "Take Me High" and Fairlight-driven synth-pop wooziness of "Special Night", though eccentric opener "Money Money (Bananas)" - the set's most obviously South African sounding tune - is also brilliant.
