Mirage EP (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: ARTLESS 2185. Rel: 18 Nov 15
Techno
  1. 2FM (7:56)
  2. Sensual Healing (7:51)
Review: Following up the tremendous Illuminance EP from last year, Edinburgh's Stephen Brown returns to a.r.t.less. Like the last release for the label, Brown switches his Motor City influence from his usual high tech soul sounds to proper Robert Hood style minimalism. The entrancing and cyclical groove of "2FM" on the A side is the closest anyone has come to sounding like the master himself, but then again; it's no surprise Brown was the most capable! On the flip, "Sensual Healing" is a more restrained effort and sounding more like the usual Brown we know; rich emotive strings, syncopated rhythms and a funked up bassline. It still baffles us, how Brown and fellow Scot Vince Watson can create techno that at times sounds more Detroit than Detroit!

Review: Artless Records serves us a brilliant two tracker from this up and coming producer, Marko Furstenberg. Mr Furstenberg shows us with this track his massive Berlin/chain reaction influence. Dubby, deep chording at its best!

  1. Surkit 1990 (original version)
  2. Vessels In Distress
  3. Sundog
  4. Distance
  5. Surkit (1991 I-102 version)
  6. Serene
Review: As with the Surkit Chamber reissue by A.r.t.l.e.s.s, this collection of tracks from unsung hero Martin Bonds is jaw-dropping purely for the age of the music against how advanced it sounds. Detroit radiates out of every ounce of this original techno, whether in subtle rhythms as on "Sundog", or in blindingly bright layers of futuristic melody as on "Vessels In Distress". Even if you sometimes find really early Detroit techno production to lacking some punch, this and any other Reel By Real material will put paid to that. Just try denying the awesome power of the bassline on "Serene". Highly recommended.

Magnitude EP (hand-stamped 12" + sticker)
Cat: ARTLESS 218120021. Rel: 01 May 18
Techno
  1. Magnitude (6:05)
  2. Matrix (4:59)
  3. Instinct (6:21)
  4. Compassion (6:05)
Review: Over the last decade, Stojche Cvetanovski has appeared for many top labels, such as liebe*detail, Dogmatik and Subwax BCN. Here he makes his debut on Don Williams' esteemed Berlin imprint a.r.t.less, with some soulful techno excursions on the Magnitude EP. From the steely and austere energy of the title track - a dubby excursion from the factory floor which is perfect for those heads down moments, to additional A side cut "Matrix" - a deep and almost beatless number which displays even more emotive qualities. Featuring layers of life affirming strings/pads working their subtle magic - pretty awesome stuff. On the flip, Cvetanovski certainly proves that there is real diversity in his repertoire, on the sombre electro bass of "Compassion" which closes out this fine EP. Tip!

Three EP (hand-stamped 12" in hand-stamped sleeve)
Cat: ARTLESS 2182. Rel: 11 Sep 17
Techno
  1. VLV (7:13)
  2. ABV (6:05)
  3. DST (5:38)
Review: Munich based Janis and Fabian are back on Mojuba sublabel a.r.t.less for some dusty and greyscale techno in the vein of homeboys the Zenker Brothers. Their third release, fittingly titled Three, features the pounding warehouse ready assault of "VLV" which is perfect to lead into the peak time. Plus those evocative pads add a nice touch. On the flip, the broken and moody effects of "ABV" will no doubt bear comparisons to Rene Pawlowitz' work as Shed: but it's a great track in its own right, we must say. Finally, there's some less fierce yet functional mood lighting in the form of "DSY" which is a tunnelling affair with a hypnotic bassline, steely rhythms and reverb drenched aesthetic.
