Review: All City's LA series reaches its penultimate episode with LA photographer come beatsmith Coleman and Detroit's Ta'Raach each taking a ten inch side of vinyl. More commonly known for the photographic direction of the Madvillain albums amongst other things, Coleman proves his production chops on his first solo endeavour. "Write Thing", the final collaborative track with Eglo's Fatima is pick here, with her buttery vocals riding the hazy orchestral stutter with aplomb. On the flip Ta'raach opts for the mixtape approach, adopting a Bullion style continual saunter through sampledelic heat.

Flourish
Review: As The Cyclist, Derry-based musician Andrew Morrison first surfaced back in 2011 with a cassette on Crash Symbols but came to wider attention with last year's excellent Bones In Motion LP for Leaving Records. The fifteen tracks spilled with tape saturated magnificence from every angle, and since then Morrison has diverted some of his creative energies into the more dance floor-focused Buz Ludzha. That project debuted on All City earlier this year with a 12? of "distorted '80s house" called Love Repetitive Rhythmics, and it's the Dublin label that now issues his latest LP as The Cyclist. If anything Flourish is a more focused set than his debut, building on his established style but veering down exciting new sonic avenues and in "Tape Grunge Rave" possesses one of this year's best track titles.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
Dam Funk - "Night Stroll"
Dam Funk - "3012 Luv Affair"
Computer Jay - "Phantom"
Computer Jay - "Vice"
Computer Jay - "Rare Type"
Review: Round seven of All City's highly collectable ten inch series drops with perhaps the most impressive pairing to date. Dam Funk needs little introduction to anyone with a passing interest in fine music, and the Stones Throw funkateer displays all his unique talent on the two tracks that plaster the A Side. It's easy to visualise the woozy synth led snap of "Night Stroll" sound tracking a twilight sojourn through the hilly surrounds of Silverlake LA. Complementing this is the low slung sexx funk of "3012 Luv Affair", with Dam in full on organ wig-out mode. On the flip Computer Jay drops three tracks of heavy percussive heat with opener "Phantom" betraying the punk-funk intro with a spectral beatdown characterised by reverberant breaks. "Vice" showcases Jay's ease with intricate drum programming and is augmented by a fuzzed out 8 bit melody, while the oscilatting analogue drama of "Rare Type" proves to be brilliantly different.

Strangbrew (B Bravo remix)
Review: Strangebrew sees San Francisco based button basher supreme Devonwho return to the All City imprint some two years after his sublime debut release Keepthafunkalive dropped. Sun drenched g-funked out instrumental bliss rules supreme across the three Devonwho productions, with the stripped back rhythms of the title track allowing the heliocentric strains of purple melodics the space to shine bright. Alongside this "Sleet" takes an equally slackened 4/4 beatdown approach, with spaced out keys spread lasciviously over several dizzying layers, whilst "Cactus" adopts an altogether hazier poise. Recent Earnest Endeavours addition B Bravo is a smart choice to add his slick glacial bump-funk boogie to the title track.

Maybe I Did Burn Ya Place (8:22)
Each Day Is The First Day (6:02)
Review: Moonrise Hill Material co-founder Folamour makes his first appearance on Dublin's All City imprint, in the process delivering one of the most pleasingly positive deep house cuts we've heard for some time. "Shakkei" is marked out by wonderfully flowing piano lines of the kind that once turned "Strings of Life" into an all-time anthem. These combine wonderfully with the producer's loose-but-heavy, drum machine rich groove and near Balearic chord progressions. It's something of a stunner, all told. Elsewhere, Folamour explores deeper and dreamier pastures on "Maybe I Did Burn Ya Place", before reaching for the Roy Ayers style vibraphone, cheeky jazz-funk samples and Andres-esque grooves on "Each Day Is A Frist Day".

Mike Gao - "Hubris Produca"
Mike Gao - "Loving Night"
Tokimonsta - "Alive"
Tokimonsta - "Last Night''s Blurry Memories"
Tokimonsta - "Park Walks"
Review: All City round off a superlative year of premier beat delivery with the eighth in their series of LA beatdown ten inches with Tokimonsta and Mike Gao at the helm! Naturally a staple of the LA beat scene - if you don't know Gao for his production work as part of the Galapagos4 label, then it's likely his name will flutter across your radar after his ingenious beat boxing app for the iPad sees the light of day. His contribution to this stellar series is a more than exemplary introduction to a producer with plenty of beat swagger in his arsenal with "Babylon Child" particularly appealing. On the other side Brainfeeder beat gal Tokimonsta impresses just as much with a grainy hue of atmospherics running through "Alive", whilst "Last Night's Blurry Memories" remains true to the title with some decidedly dreamlike melodies engulfed in warm fuzzed out bass frequencies. The neck snapping best is left till last with the straight vocal stutter boom bap drama of "Park Walks" the finest example of Toki's ease on the MPC.

Dogon
Review: Gifted & Blessed's Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker has been operating under a number of monikers from his LA base for several years now, demonstrating a talent for multi faceted electronic music flecked indelibly with soul that has caught the ear of Steve Spacek, King Britt and the Eglo crew along the way. He seems to be in something of a purple patch production wise with this return to the All City imprint preceded by a stunningly presented EP entitled The Provider on his own label and soon to be followed by a new project entitled The Steoples (as well as some rumoured involvement with Alex Nut's label). On the A Side, "Seven In Twenty Four" is a wonderfully effervescent cruncher, combining delicately ringing synth patterns with 808 rhythms and rough bass and brings to mind Maurice Fulton's best dabblings as Syclops. It's complemented by the more outright 80s electro flex of "Dogon" with the skipping rhythmic base intermittently attacked by waves of analogue fudge. All City include the download codes too! Big tip!

Antiloudness War Manifesto (Tape 2) (4:40)
Review: Emergent Italian producer Herva has been responsible for some truly unique music committed to wax in recent times - see last year's album for Delsin as well as his hook up with Massprod on the mighty Kontra-Musik. His run of fine releases continues here with How To Mind Your Own, a six track EP for Dublin's All City operation which doesn't so much as defy easy genre categorisation, it laughs in the face of such futile gestures. Some may call it deep house but really Herva has crafted some mutant brands of the genre where individual tracks contain more ideas and rhythmic deviations than you are likely to hear in whole 12"s from many other artists. Totally crazy and totally refreshing.

Tried For Your Love (Hudson Mohawke remix)
Review: All City come through with Tried For Your Love the debut EP heat from hot tip Krystal Klear, last seen in the esteemed company of Lone and Illum Sphere on that rather tasty Hoya Hoya Sweat The Descent EP. Steeped in retro boogie flavours but without a sample in sight, this is a release that earmarks the elusive producer for future praise, not least the title track which contains the most delightful electro synth bass and plenty of handclaps (why is it the best tracks always have handclaps?) whilst "Boogie Wan" twists Art Of Noise style atmospherics around a pressurised thrust of percussive hits with generally smile inducing effects. The fact that the B Side emotive shimmer of "Dekryptic" is no way overshadowed by HudMo's gloriously retro haus refix of the title track just serves to show what a talent KK is!

Review: Los Angeles has firmly established itself as one of America's electronic music capitals over the last ten years, with the city particularly fertile in more experimental ends, where rave, urban and downtempo collide in a haze of found sounds, samples and original loops. Kutmah pretty much encapsulates this point. Melding elements of hip hop, post-punk and industrial, 'New Appliance' is basically the producer's new calling card - a mini masterpiece that's so tight and well-executed it leaves no questions as to the creator's ability. 'Ramallah''s intoxicating Arabic references, crackling recordings of bells, haunting chants and exotic flutes. 'Stoned In Brixton' cries out for a sunset to soundtrack, nodding to the productions of DJ Krush or Bibio, with the latter similarly invoked on 'Tres Flores'. Smoked-out innovations by the kilo.

Machine Drum - "Door Of The Cosmos"
Sun Ra - "Door Of The Cosmos"
Review: All City finally drop Machinedrum's contribution to their ongoing Sun Ra tribute series - Do not sleep! The Vision of Saturn series is perhaps the most overt example of the Dublin label's fondness for conceptual releases, reissuing material from the sizeable Sun Ra archives and pairing it with reworkings from a diverse cast of contemporary minds. As good as previous editions from hip hopper and the sadly deceased Austin Peralta were, this penultimate contribution from Machinedrum really lives up to the unrelentingly original source material . The Berlin based artist uses elements of two Sun Ra tracks - namely the classic "Door Of The Cosmos" and "Mu" - in one remix. The resultant "Door of The Cosmos" is a radical example of his hyper-kinetic footwork style rhythms, sounding like a free-jazz freakout from the sessions that went into making his last album Room(s).

Pointing Fingers
Review: Having enjoyed a remarkable 2010 that included Onra's superlative album, the LA series of killer ten inches and much more, Dublin imprint All City begin the year with the first in a new series originally mooted by the label bosses back in 2009. Inviting their favourite producers to knock heads and deliver two tracks, All City deliver a statement of intent with Martyn and Mike Slott at the controls with brilliant results! Much like the majority of Martyn's recent work it's pretty hard to categorise "All Nights", his A Side collaboration with Luckyme's Slott, other than to say it's a techno step flexer that's primed for play in the clubs. Special mention as well, for the prominent usage of cowbell and a vast array of unidentifiable sound effects that add a sonic richness to the track. The flipside brings the downtempo vibes of "Pointing Fingers", all reflective textures and soft, dreamlike melodies aided by rattling beat programming and ethereal vocal harmonies. Forward thinking sounds from all involved.
