Gemma Rogers shares ‘No Future’ video as EP hits on vinyl
Song “plays to everyone’s state of mental health”
Gemma Rogers has shared the video for the title track of her new EP as vinyl copies hit the shelves.
Described as the punk/new wave/synth artist’s most confident, varied and engaging release yet, the ‘No Future’ EP is released on 12” vinyl and digital formats via Ode to Records. The four track EP shows the full breadth of her sound, combining punk edginess with luxurious synthpop and undeniably catchy songs, capturing raw energy and Rogers’ unique and often ingenious take on lyric writing alike.
The EP’s title track, meanwhile, is probably its most tender and sensitive moment, melancholy but never sentimental. ‘No Future’ was written as an ode to The Beta Band, originally with a darker nihilist shade, but a collaboration with producer Fi Mac brought a lighter touch to the track: “a soliloquy to the lovers amongst us.”
“The inspiration for this song came from a trip to the coast with a good friend.” says Gemma, “I realised that by just being there – we were connecting. Sometimes that’s enough. Just being there. The song plays to everyone’s state of mental health – with a beautiful and poignant outro from (poetry slammer) Deanna Rodger.”
The EP also features two recent singles – the corruption-bashing anthem ‘Coming For The Top’ and ‘DKU’, which elicited a host of BBC 6 Music plays from Steve Lamacq, Amy Lamé and Chris Hawkins and support from John Kennedy (Radio X), with Louder Than War premiering its darkly hilarious video.
The tracklisting is completed by ‘Never Have I Ever’, the EP’s most direct salvo, a vicious satire on the normalisation of sexual violence directed at women. “I thought it was worth exploring and comparing my attitude to men by looking at things I’ve never done or said to a man,” she says, “Things that would seem bizarre or wrong; but these bizarre or wrong actions from a man to a woman are somehow normalised by some.”
Since releasing her debut album No Place Like Home in 2022, named as one of Steve Lamacq’s top ten of that year (and boasting several BBC 6 Music Playlsted singles), she’s taken her live show to independent venues across the UK as well as bigger shows in support of Paolo Nutini at Stanmer Park in Brighton and Wasing Estate in Reading.
For the ‘No Future’ EP, Gemma has teamed up with Ode to Records, a new sister label of punk stable Holy Dotage Records responsible for recent vinyl releases by punk legends SPIZZENERGI and fast rising duo Voodoo Radio.
