ASHRR – Sunshine Low album, track by track

The trio talk us through their latest collision of electronic soul, post-punk, space disco and indie-dance

LA threesome ASHRR – aka lead vocalist Steven Davis and producer-musician-vocalists Josh Charles and Ethan Allen – are back with a brilliant new album for Ralph Lawson’s superb 20/20 Vision Recordings that finds them working by the old mantra of ‘art for art’s sake’.

Here, the trio talk us though the LP – an effortlessly eclectic record collision of electronic soul, post-punk, space disco and indie-dance, with vocals bringing an indie edge to jangling delights like ‘Please Don’t Stop The Rain’ – track by tantalising track.

PLEASE DON’T STOP THE RAIN

This track began with a unique DJ-inspired approach to writing and then moved into the assembly process. It features a lot of hip-hop elements, with sampled drums, along with a harmonic sensibility reminiscent of Roy Ayers. The track has a persistent dance floor hook that stays with you after the first listen. It evolved into a moody noir piece that transforms into a celebratory chorus, with a soulful guitar that contrasts with the swinging rhythm.

DIFFERENT KIND OF LIFE

We drew inspiration from 70s Afrobeat music, which drives the drum and bass in this song. The polyrhythmic drums and complex bassline contribute to the song’s unique identity. The lyrics reflect a universal search for something more, questioning if what we have is ever enough. The infectious beat and the chorus chant provided the foundation for the rest of the song’s development.

SWAY

A straightforward, driving dance floor anthem with an underlying sense of ambiguity, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in the moment. The lyrics “You gotta sway all night / You gotta stay till the healing of the morning light” capture the essence. We were fortunate to have Emmanuel Ackon, who played bass in Ebo Taylor’s band, contribute to this track, recording his part in Ghana. His intricate bassline drives the song, and the chill, sexy vibe of the lyrics contrasts beautifully with the direct groove.

SUNSHINE LOW

Our band’s unique vocal combination shines in this track. The harmonies in the chorus capture the essence of ‘Sunshine Low’, blending happiness, excitement, and the thrill of life with a touch of melancholy and hazy sunset memories. This song is an homage to the surreal space between daytime and dusk, akin to the indistinguishable border where the ocean meets the sky.

WHAT’S BEEN TURNING YOU ON

A sensual and direct invitation that simmers on the dance floor while straightforwardly asking what you desire. It delves into the questions and mysteries encountered in relationships.

KOOLOVE

This track underwent various versions before arriving at its final form, which blends elements to bring the chorus to life. It’s a cosmic journey, using harmony to create a psychedelic mantra that conveys a feeling rather than a statement.

LION

The pulsating 808 bassline is complemented by a 90s UK soulful hook and a twisted melody imbued with a sense of danger. It represents a journey into the primordial darkness of our thoughts.

FIZZY

The very first song written for the album, “Fizzy” set the tone for the entire project. The title was retained from the original demo, which we felt captured the album’s signature sound. The song blends cool jazz harmonies with Steven’s natural croon, evolving into a breakdown inspired by New York City’s underground party scene. It balances sweetness with an otherworldly dream.

NO GARDEN

Inspired by a jam session and influenced by the trip-hop style we love, this track juxtaposes sophisticated harmonics with unique sounds. It embodies the essence of ASHRR!

DEUX SONS

What started as an improvised jam with a New Orleans voodoo vibe transforms into a beautiful hook sung in French with intriguing chords. It represents two hearts and two songs, reaching out for unity through sound.

SOMETHING NEW

This track explores the personal quest to understand and excavate feelings in a relationship. It reflects on how perceptions may differ from reality and how emotions ebb and flow, much like the sea.

SUN SONG

Infused with world music influences, this track features a melodic guitar line and a spiritually uplifting high.

THE GLOW

By far the most challenging song we wrote for this album, it went through 25 variations over two years. It’s hard to describe but feels like the perfect closing track, embodying the hope for the glow of inspiration and the joy of finding it.
