Plant43 aka Emile Facey, the London-based electro specialist, is about to drop his ‘Concrete Echo’ 12”, consisting of tracks written specifically to play live in the 3:30-4:30AM slot at Globus/Tresor in Berlin where he’s been a resident since the start of 2024. We decided to invite Facey to celebrate its release with a mix of EP highlights and other faves.
“‘Concrete Echo’ and ‘Emerald Shift’ are both taken from the upcoming Concrete Echo 12”,” he says of the mix, “Some of the material I wrote during the pandemic was less dancefloor focussed but as the club gigs gathered momentum after the break I found myself writing much faster, less cerebral material designed for the club and a big sound system, focussing on sharply defined percussion and bass.
“‘Raw Vectors’ opens the B-side on the upcoming 12” and it’s a slower electro track. The lower BPM allowed me to play around with some funky bass lines which was great fun. The Elektron Syntakt synth I use in my live set up has a lot of amazing bass sounds which I can manipulate on the fly while playing live.
“‘Flowing Viridian’ closes the mix and is a digital bonus track, exclusive to the Plant43 Bandcamp. It’s an ambient track which I wrote on my laptop while in Berlin. Releasing these short ambient tracks has become really important to me and a way of expressing different emotions and another side to my music. It started with the cinematic tracks I included on my Luminous Machines album earlier this year and continued on my album The Unfading Spark released on Quiet Details last month.
“I really love making DJ mixes as it gives me an opportunity to highlight tracks by other producers and labels whose work I admire. Before I started making electronic music I was a DJ and I’ve always spent hours and hours choosing and mixing tracks which I think complement each other. I enjoy chasing that buzz you get when you find two tracks which combine to make something magic together.”
