Sheer Mag announce Playing Favorites album with title track video
DIY cult heroes may visit UK early next year
Sheer Mag have announced the arrival of their third album, Playing Favorites, and shared the video for its title track.
The song is about life on the road as a band, something which the indie/punk fusionists must be getting very used to, given the size of their current extensive US tour. “After nearly ten years of touring together, we felt qualified to write a song about doing it. It’s a good introduction to the next era of Sheer Mag,” they say.
The album was originally planned as a tight, four track EP when work started on it in 2021. But as rhythm guitarist and primary lyricist Matt Palmer explains: “those first four songs came out of a hard moment in life for all of us collectively—they kind of felt like an attempt to figure out how to have fun when you actually feel miserable.”
Before long, the band realised this new material would perhaps be better served within the context of a fully fleshed out rock LP, bracketed by the support of a wider array of juxtaposing psychic moods and sonic textures.
The band are rumoured to be looking at playing UK dates in Spring 2024.
The album is released by Jack White’s label Third Man Records on March 1.
