George Fitzgerald on his new EP: “Over embellishment is so easy in music now”

Domino Records’ Fitzgerald guides us track-by-track through new EP

George FitzGerald has been discussing his new EP ‘Not As I’, about to surface in vinyl form on Domino imprint Double Six, with Juno Daily.

The four track EP, which follows his third studio album Stellar Drifting, which came out last year, is set for release on vinyl on August 18.

The first taste for the EP was the the entrancing ‘Mother’. Featuring SYML, the solo project of American artist Brian Fennell who recently collaborated with Lana Del Rey, it features a beautiful piano melody set against hypnotic beats and SYML’s crystal clear, mesmerising vocals.

“Collaborating with SYML on this EP was a real joy,” George said. “I actually reached out to him a few years ago to see if he was interested in writing together. He’s an amazing lyricist and has a distinctive vocal tone, and I felt it would match my music really beautifully. Still, it took me quite a while to get to a place where I could finish the track, but sometimes you just have to let things take their course and not force them. Hopefully you can hear some of that patience in this track.”

Recorded at George’s London studio at the end of 2022, ‘Mother’ and the rest of the EP showcase his continued evolution as a producer and his ability to reframe his work through new collaborations.

“I’d been thinking a lot about my first record ‘Fading Love’ and I wanted to revisit the calmer and more intimate part of my sound,” George explains. “Music that occupies a liminal space between club and home listening. To me, ‘Stellar Drifting’ fizzed with nervous energy and maximalist sound design. In my head, this is the afterglow from that.”

Here, Fitzgerald talks us through all four of the tracks on the EP.

‘Mother’

“Originally a sketch on my modular synth, I sent the idea to SYML around 2.5 years ago. A lot happened in the middle. Pandemics, life, albums. I struggled to finish it off amongst all of that but we finally managed it toward the end of last year. My favourite tracks have always happened at their own pace. Forcing things doesn’t make better music.”

‘Venera’

“This is perhaps the most all-encompassing track I’ve written. Every member of my live band plays on this. From the drums, to the piano, to the horns at the end. It reminds me of some of my earliest tracks, like ‘Don’t You’, just made with all the extra knowledge I’ve gained over the past few years.”

‘Not As I’

“My tracks usually centre around one synth line or vocal hook. This was a very simple line taken from my Juno 6 recorded into a cassette player. That synth is so well loved because you can keep things simple on it and the quality of the instrument itself takes care of the rest. Over embellishment is so easy in music now, so it’s nice to use things that limit the need for that.”

‘All Roads’

“The vocal on this is actually my daughter, Frieda, singing into my iPhone in the studio. I got her to repeat the line over and over and made a kind of children’s choir out of her voice. Hopefully she doesn’t ask me for any royalties.”
