Mort Garson’s Moog-fuelled moon landing soundtracks for CBS and National Geographic to be released on vinyl

Recordings feature on Journey To The Moon & Beyond

A new collection of tracks by 60s and 70s electronic music visionary Mort Garson, including his soundtrack for the CBS News live coverage of the moon landings and music from a National Geographic documentary on them in 1970, is being released next month.

Journey To The Moon & Beyond is the latest release from Sacred Bones, who have released a number of new collections of Garson’s music in recent years starting with a reissue of his celebrated Mother Earth’s Plantasia album in 2019.

The release date has been carefully selected because of its proximity to another very important date. July 20th marks the 54th anniversary of the moon landing and happens to be Mort’s 99th birthday.

Julliard-educated Garson was active as a session player in the post-war era, scored plush arrangements for Doris Day, and for Glen Campbell’s ‘By the Time I Get to Phoenix’. He wrote ‘Our Day Will Come’, a hit which has been performed by Ruby and the Romantics to James Brown, Amy Winehouse, k.d. lang, Isaac Hayes and Max Romeo among others.

Garson had a transformation of another sort as he encountered Robert Moog’s early prototype synthesizer at the Audio Engineering Society’s West Coast convention in 1967. It was then that Garson’s prolific-ness cranked into overdrive, clocking up over a thousand writing and arranging credits, but eventually his music got buried in the topsoil of time.
