Jah Shaka, icon of London’s reggae sound system scene, dies unexpectedly
Jamaican born reggae legend moved to the UK in the 1950s

Jah Shaka, whose reggae sound system events have been a fixture of London nightlife for decades, has died.
A notice from his family appeared on his Facebook page yesterday (April 12) confirming the passing of the Jamaican-born DJ, requesting “sensitivity and time” to allow them to grieve.

It’s thought that Shaka was in his mid 70s and that his death was unexpected – he had tour dates booked in for August 2023 as well as having recently performed.
His dances were typified by bone shaking bass emenating from huge speaker stacks, although his DJ style – no lightshow and one record deck only – was distinctly no frills.
