LA Circuits tease stunning new Lab System Unit II
The beautiful system combines the brand’s powerhouse EM-6A sequencer with a new EM-5A voice module.
SoCal’s LA Circuits have teased a new Eurorack system. The Lab System Unit II is an all-in-one instrument housed in a flight case, combining the brand’s existing EM-6A Chronograph Sequential Rhythm Generator with a new EM-5A Atomic Meddle voice module. The former handles sequencing, while the latter takes care of the sound.
There’s a lot to unpick in the EM-5A Atomic Meddle, which consists of two apparently identical sections of contour follower, sweep oscillator and stereo VCF. The contour followers appear to act as simple AR envelope generators, with the sweep oscillators offering triangle, square and sawtooth waves. The resonant analogue filters offer a choice of high-pass, band-pass, notch and low-pass modes.
Don’t expect the Lab System Unit II to come cheap. The EM-6A alone is over £1,500, and we’d expect the whole unit to exceed twice that price point. Thankfully, for those on a tighter budget, the LA Circuits range starts at more affordable price points for excellent modules like the EM-401 Apres Dix filter (which may be the basis of the filters in the EM-5A) and the EM-201 Moon Jock envelope generator.
