Ena carries out Distillation for Latency

Japanese producer Yu Asaeda drops four tracks of experimentation on the refined label.

It’s been quite a ride for Yu Asaeda, the Japanese producer behind the Ena moniker. His roots are certainly within the realms of experimental bass music, touching on the once-cutting-edge but sadly missed 7even label before striking up a prolific relationship with Samurai Horo, the off-kilter sublabel of drum & bass staple Samurai Music. Back in 2014, James Manning reviewed the Binaural LP, praising “Ena’s precarious J-quirk drum-making amongst other features.” The Tokyo-based artist is clearly on a roll at the moment, having already delivered the Soil album to German label Niløs so far this year as well as collaborating with Felix K on the 249 album for the ever-excellent Hidden Hawaii.

Asaeda’s fine year continues with full details of his debut for Sidney Gerard and Suleiman Said’s Latency label, who themselves have been on searing form in 2016, charming all with the textural delights of Nuel, Kane Ikin and Andrea Belfi. Hinted at earlier this year, the Distillation EP sees Ena present four tracks that follow on perfectly from the previous work on Samurai Horo, as well as fitting in with the aesthetic that Latency are developing. There is indeed rhythmic work humming away at the heart of the machine, but the focus is very much placed on atmosphere and tone, creating an eerie and enveloping listening experience. Judge the mood for yourself by way of the SoundCloud player below.

Latency will release Distillation by Ena soon.
