DMX Krew confirms You Exist
The UK electro stalwart makes his Hypercolour debut with a new LP in Feburary.
It’s always interesting charting the movements of Edward Upton as he charges about the fringes of the UK electronic music scene on an unending quest to reach electro funk nirvana. Whether as EDMX, Computor Rockers, Bass Potato or any number of other aliases, Upton has constantly flown the flag for a classicist approach to electro in its myriad forms, but it’s as DMX Krew that he has issued the most material over the years. His roots are in the Rephlex camp while there have been plenty of outings on his own Breakin’ and Fresh Up labels, but over the years spots as diverse as Power Vacuum, Permanent Vacation, Turbo, Zodiac 44 and Rush Hour’s No ‘Label’ have equally played host to those sure-footed, synth rich grooves. Hypercolour meanwhile has been turning in recent years to artists from the annals of British electronica history including Luke Vibert for the Ridmik and Kerrier District 4 LPs, not to mention Neil Landstrumm’s Dragon Under for affiliated label Sneaker Social Club.
In a strong start to 2016, the Bristol-based label is welcoming Upton in DMX Krew mode to deliver a whole album of shimmering, club-ready gold in the form of You Exist. There’s no over-arching concept to the release, just nine fulsome tracks that position themselves neatly between the synth-pop leanings of early ‘Krew material and the more functional thump of the EDMX output. It’s testament to Upton’s knack for the approach that it still sounds fresh after all these years, but that it surely does. There are no clips online at present, but if you’re familiar with previous output from the man then rest assured you’ll dig this new batch.
Hypercolour will release You Exist by DMX Krew on February 26.
