Dnuos Ytivil introduce Simo Cell
The Livity Sound sublabel returns with the debut release from the young Parisian artist.
Livity Sound seemed to step into a new era earlier this year, with Pev teaming up with Kowton and Hodge for two distinct releases that featured strains of highly strung melodic frequencies that cut through the often monochromatic tendencies of the label. While these tones still elicited the kind of nervous soundsystem tension that has always been the raison d’être of the Bristolian label, it felt like a noticeable switch in stance, as Oli Warwick posited in his review of Signal 3 / Low Strobe. Dnuos Ytivil meanwhile has less to go on, being just five releases deep in the past three years and last manifesting with the sound of the excellently named Bruce. As a vehicle committed to presenting young and less familiar talent, the Livity sublabel is perhaps less affected by the creative arc of the primary protagonists, instead continuing to shape out the foundations of the overall aesthetic that Pev and co. have been trying to reach for from the start.
It certainly feels that way listening to the latest release, which welcomes a brand new Parisian producer named Simo Cell into the fold. There’s little to no background information on the chap to go on, but the tracks themselves speak volumes. Rhythmically the style is undeniably Livity-esque, but there’s plenty of character scuffed into the flanger-sweeping snare rasps and nervy synth notes to make Simo Cell a worthy addition rather than a simple knock-off attempt. The record will land at the end of July, and you can check samples of both tracks below.
Dnuos Ytivil will release Cellar Door / Piste Jaune by Simo Cell on July 24.
