Afrikan Sciences to release Circuitous LP on PAN

afrikan-sciences-590

The Bronx-based producer will release his third solo album on Bill Kouligas’ label next month.

As Afrikan Sciences, Eric Porter has been melding elements of soul, jazz, broken beat and house with an interest in science fiction into deep and abstract forms since 2007. Recent years have seen Porter become far more prolific, with two solo albums leading up to Sketches Of Space, the collaborative LP with Deepblak founder Aybee issued earlier this year. To date, Porter has exclusively released his music through Deepblak, making an album on PAN – hinted at in an NTS appearance by label boss Bill Kouligas back in July – something of a coup.

While Porter’s work has always circled around the idea of Afrofuturism, the 14-track Circuitous looks to make the link more explicit, with the label stating it “casts itself and its creator in a liminal zone most recognizably charted by astral traveler Sun Ra.” Supposedly reflecting his live improvised sets, constructed with turntables, upright bass, tablets and controllers, each track apparently “maps the artist’s own movements, tracing paths of flight, highway trajectories through tunnels and over bridges, and rides through rough and gated neighborhoods.”

The album has been mastered by Rashad Becker at D&M, and artwork comes from Louis Reith and Bill Kouligas. Those looking for a taste of Circuitous ahead of its release early next month can listen to a stream of the title track below.

PAN will release Circuitous on 2LP, CD and digital formats on December 8.
