Beau Wanzer and Dan Jugel are Juzer

Juzer - Horseplay

The Chicago-based duo will release their debut collaborative release on The Corner next month, the four-track Horseplay EP.

Although an artist with strong ties to the Nation label and the Jakbeat ethos, as well as being the producer behind one of the oddest records on L.I.E.S. last year, Balls Of Steel, Beau Wanzer is no stranger to straight techno either. Last year saw him team up with Shawn O’Sullivan as Civil Duty to contribute a track to the Security EP for Anthony Parasole’s label The Corner. News now emerges Wanzer will make his return to Parasole’s label next month with the four-track Horseplay, which sees him collaborate with good Chicago friend Dan Jugel under the Juzer alias. Jugel is a producer and techno DJ with ties to Chicago’s techno scene that date back to the ’90s, who also put out material under the Mandate alias and as part of Ghost Arcade, and is currently involved with the Dar Embarks project.

Speaking to Wanzer about the project over email, he told us that his friendship with Jugel goes back to 2002, when the pair met whilst working at Weekend Records & Soap in Chicago, but despite recording music together since 2006, Horseplay will be their first release. “I kinda forced him out of hibernation to start recording as much as possible recently and it’s been really fun,” Wanzer told us, “he comes from a different background musically than I do – he’s a ‘techno’ guy, and I’m more into industrial/wave/weirdo shit…so it’s a nice balance.” Previews of the record can be heard below, which nicely demonstrate the “stripped down and dry” techno that Wanzer told us the duo set out to make.

The Corner will release Horseplay on 12″ vinyl on May 12.
