Karen Gwyer set for return to No Pain In Pop

The London-based producer will release the New Roof 12″ through the label next month.

One of the earliest graduates of patten’s Limited Dubs tape experiment series, the Ann Arbor born Karen Gwyer served up a fine debut album last year in the shape of Needs Continuum. Issued on No Pain In Pop in February, the nine track slow burner proved to be one of last year’s most poignantly compelling long players and was rightfully included in our favourite 25 albums of 2013. Subsequent to this album, Gwyer popped up on some of our favourite labels, reworking FC Judd for Public Information and providing Opal Tapes with the killer Kiki The Wormhole cassette.

Having opened up material from her album for some mind-bending Torn Hawk remixes on No Pain In Pop over the summer, Gwyer is set to return to the label almost a year to the date after her album was issued with New Roof. Somewhat frustratingly presented as an EP, this upcoming three track 12″ is described as a “more mechanistic and weighty” than her debut album and finds her further embracing hardware driven techno – B-side track “Missisissipippi” is a lurching 17 minute epic. It’s not clear whether Gwyer was moved to title the release as such after some much needed roofing work was done to her home, but we’d like to think that was the case.

Those wishing to see Karen Gwyer live can catch her performing across Europe over the next few weeks as part of the Opal Tapes tour with boss man Bish, 1991, Druss and various other label acts – dates on those at the bottom of the page.

No Pain In Pop will release New Roof by Karen Gwyer in 12″ format on February 17.
