Mika Vainio readies next album as Ø
The revered Finnish experimentalist will release an eighth album as Ø next year.
Following the output of Mika Vainio under his various aliases and projects is almost like keeping up with a small genre of music, which the Fin, as Ø, adds to with the forthcoming Konstellaatio LP. Like the majority of Ø’s output, the album is due on his own 20-year-old Sähkö Recordings and follows Vainio’s two album length projects released in 2013; the Kilo LP issued on Blast First Petite and industrial-ambient Monstrance collaboration with Börft Records co-founder and iDEAL Recordings boss Joachim Nordwall. Set for release digitally next month, a wider issue of Konstellaatio will arrive in early March on CD and vinyl.
Unlike those previous albums, the music of Ø focuses on softer, soothing sounds, with a particular emphasis on spatially vast sonic environments and dynamic range. The nine-track Konstellaatio LP was produced in Berlin, where Vainio now resides, between 2006 and 2013, and an artistic press release written by Italian writer Daniela Cascella describes it as “not just rhythm, not just texture”, while further explaining that Konstellaatio hints at “forms” that are extremely codified yet “never quite there”.
Sähkö Recordings will release Konstellaatio digitally on January 13, while CD and vinyl copies will be availble on March 3.
