Juan Atkins returns to R&S with Control/The Messenger
Detroit techno deity Juan Atkins will return to the R&S imprint with the “Control/The Messenger” 12″ due out next month.
In its original incarnation, R&S released a slew of Model 500 material from 1993-1999, including four albums. More recently, the relaunched imprint released the “OFI/Huesca” single from in 2010, which was subsequently remixed by R&S 2.0 label mates Bullion and Space Dimension Controller. “Control/The Messenger” sees Atkins once again working under his Model 500 moniker in solo mode. In recent times it had morphed into a collaborative/live project featuring Mike Banks and Mark Taylor of Underground Resistance.
This latest missive sees Atkins in towering form; A-Side “Control” is twitching, paranoid electro, with Atkins’ own vocals dipped in croaky robotic atmospherics, creating an overriding sensation that feels every bit as wide-eyed and futuristic as his early sonic experiments. “The Messenger” on the flip is a more stripped back, introspective affair, with metallic hats, raw drums and moody synths.
R&S Records will release “Control/The Messenger” by Juan Atkins on 12″ vinyl and digital formats on February 20, 2012.
