Marbeya Sound – No Anchor review
West Coast duo Marbeya Sound are finally starting to demonstrate further evidence of the potential shown when Eskimo handpicked their track “Solomon’s Take” for inclusion on last year’s superlative Balearic Beats Volume 2 compilation (which also featured some killer slow jams from Hot Toddy, Rayko, Premier Rang and Naum Gabo). The No Anchor EP on the devilishly prolific Solardisco imprint is the first of several releases due on a number of imprints including Tirk.
On to the music then – a brilliant guitar riff echoes through the early stages of “No Anchor” before a dubby synth line goes toe to toe with the thumping drums to a backdrop of warm fuzzy bass. Sometime DFA artiste Altair Nouveau follows up sublime remixes of Pollyn and Ajello with a sprawling zero gravity space chugger of a rerub, replete with a killer funk boogie bassline. Neurotic Drum Band of Wurst fame represent the East Coast with a remix that is infused with the spirit of the late night dubby club jam. We can just picture this one playing as the sun rises at Mister Saturday Night.
