Hey There Jim
Cat: OTS 201. Rel: 06 Apr 21
  1. Jimmy "Bo" Horne - "Hey There Jim" (2:34)
  2. Lynn Williams - "How Can You Call Love Fascination" (2:26)
Review: Jimmy Bo Horne brings his raw and expressive vocals to this new release on Japanese label Ultra Vybe. The oft-sampled America singer, writer and producer has been turning out such sounds since the mid 70s but remains on top of his game here. The big horns bring energy, the rolling rhythm section gets you up on your feet and the whole thing screams floor filler. On the flip is Lynn Williams with 'How Can You Call Love Fascination,' a much more slow and sensual soul tune with acrobatic vocals and nice piano fills next to a big horn section.

Cat: DSND 007. Rel: 07 Apr 21
  1. Effimera (3:47)
  2. Digressione (4:24)
  3. Capao (3:51)
Review: Kaymany & Asestar hail from Rome, a city where many musicians spend most of their days producing sounds for the television industry and even shopping malls. That's part of the reason the country has such a reparation for great jazz-funk sounds and now adding to that cannon are Kaymany & Asestar. 'Effimera' is glossy and feel good disco with retro future chords, while 'Digressione' has a Bob James style energy to it with its high speed funky bass and incidental chords. 'Capao' closes in Latin fashion with manic keys and more plucked and funky bass slaps making you shake every limb.

Wamono A To Z Vol 1: Japanese Jazz Funk & Rare Groove 1968-1980 (reissue)
Cat: 180GWALP 01RE. Rel: 08 Apr 21
  1. Toshiko Yonekawa - "Soran Bushi" (2:45)
  2. Takeo Yamashita - "A Touch Of Japanese Tone" (4:21)
  3. Tadaaki Misago & Tokyo Cuban Boys - "Jongara Reggae" (3:38)
  4. Chikara Ueda & The Power Station - "Cloudy" (6:08)
  5. Chumei Watanabe - "Downtown Blues" (3:38)
  6. Kifu Mitsuhashi - "Hanagasa Ondo" (2:51)
  7. Monica Lassen & The Sounds - "Incitation" (5:29)
  8. Norio Maeda, Jiro Inagaki & The All-Stars - "Go Go A Go Go" (3:19)
  9. Akira Ishikawa & Count Buffalo & The Jazz Rock Band - "The Sidewinder" (2:41)
  10. Masahiko Sato, Jiro Inagaki & Big Soul Media - "Sniper's Snooze" (6:42)
Review: Some compilations manage to both educate, inform and educate in equal measure; this fine collection from Japanese crate diggers DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite and Chintam is one such set. Comprising mostly little-known tracks recorded by Japanese artists between 1968 and '70, it offers up a wealth of cuts inspired by American jazz-funk "rare groove". There's much to admire across the ten tracks, from the mazy Rhodes solos, fizzing big band jazz grooves and traditional Eastern instrumentation of Toshiko Yonekawa's "Soran Bushi", and the languidly-slung brilliance of Tadaki Misago and Tokyo Cuban Boys' multi-faceted musical fusion "Jongara Reggae", to the Jimi Hendrix-goes-funk heaviness of "Incitation" by Monica Lassen & The Sounds, and the drums-driven dancefloor madness of Masahiko Sato Jiro Inagaki & Big Soul Media's "Sniper's Snooze". Recommended.

  8. Kan Mikami - "Jikokeno No Samba" (2:23)
  9. Akira Yasuda & Beat Folk - "Yumura No Obaba" (3:04)
  10. Pinky Chicks - "Tosetsu Donpan Bushi" (3:16)
Review: On the first instalment in the Wamono A to Z compilation series, released in September 2020, dusty-fingered diggers DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite.jp and Chintam focused on Japanese jazz-funk and rare groove gems recorded and released between 1968 and '80. For this speedy sequel, they've narrowed their focus further in order to showcase little-known Japanese funk slammers pressed to wax between 1970 and '77. As you'd expect, there's tons of absolute bangers amongst the 10 tracks on show, with highlights including the Blaxploitation movie soundtrack vibes of Mieko Hirota's 'Theme of Doberman Cop', the fuzzy, Hammond-sporting psych-funk of Fujio Tokita's quirky 'Watashi No Beatles', and the energetic, proto disco-funk of Hatsumi Shibata's 'Singer Lady'.

I Want Some Water
I Want Some Water (limited LP)

  1. Prayer Of Happiness (7:59)
  2. I Want Some Water (10:18)
  3. The Advocate (9:06)
  4. Blues For Lupe (10:54)
Review: Nimbus West have managed to get permission to present Billie Harris' I Want Some Water album on wax for the first time ever here. It was recorded back in 1980 and featured the talented likes of Horace Tapscott, David Bryant, Everett Brown Jr. and Daoud Woods. This version has been cut from the original master tapes but comes with brand new artwork and liner notes that give great context from Mark Weber. 'I Want Some Water' is the one that often gets most attention for its mellifluous flow and expansive, 10-minute wandering.

Review: Blue Jazz's on going Tone Poet Series - which is about reissuing classic jazz on heavyweight, audiophile quality vinyl - throws out another gem here with the Hank Mobley classic Soul Station. Hank started out as a pianist before moving to the tenor sax aged 16. He put plenty of emotion and intensity into every note he played and during the years 1955-1970 he fronted more than 25 Blue Note albums as well as being a sideman on many others. This record captures him at the peak of his powers with a lyrical playing style and length, passionate solos.

  14. Tropical (bonus track) (2:42)
Review: Even by the standards of the library music scene, where eccentricity seemed to be encouraged, Nino Nardini and Roger Roger's Jungle Obsession is brilliantly bonkers. Apparently designed as a musical version of The Jungle Book, the 1971 set saw the experienced multi-instrumentalists offer up a colourful, quirky and highly entertaining collection of cuts that variously drew on exotica, lounge music, early synthesizer soundscapes, Afro-funk, psych-funk, and the tongue-in-cheek oddness of Jean-Jacques Perrey. As this remastered, 50th anniversary reissue proves, the album remains hugely alluring and entertaining, delivering a string of off-kilter musical highlights that can't fail to put smiles on faces.

Review: Last year acclaimed harpist Amanda Whiting made a big impression with her Jazzman debut, a fantastic mini album called Little Sunflower. Here she expands on that, channelling the spirits of Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane on a set that combines her fluid, versatile and expressive harp playing with dusty jazz grooves and nods towards Afro-cuban jazz, soul-jazz, more cinematic compositions and, of course, the kind of rubbery, late-night jazz that most associate with smoke-filled basement bars and backstreet concert halls. The range of sounds that Whiting manages to get out of her harp is simply stunning, with the expected twinkling, slo-motion motifs being joined by plucked, jazz guitar style solos and even the odd flamenco-esque flourish.
