Review: Finnish lounge lizard-turned-jazzman Jimi Tenor first joined forces with legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen for a joint album on Strut in 2009. In January 2016, they reunited for two nights of performance at Cafe Oto in London, making use of a range of prototype and experimental analogue synthesizers loaned by the Moog Sound Lab. It must have been a terrific couple of days, because the live recordings showcased here are superb. As you'd expect, Allen's distinctive drumming provides the backbone, while Tenor variously delivers mazy Moog synth solos, trippy electronics, bittersweet lounge vocals (reminiscent of his late '90s albums on Warp) and occasional flute and sax solos. The results are decidedly intergalactic and out-there: wayward Afro-jazz for analogue astronauts.

Review: A true Japanese jazz holy grail album; this 1975 album was made solely as a business card for an influential businessman and only a few hundred were known to be pressed. The quartet comprises a group of students who never shared a stage with each other and only formed for this one album yet the album sounds as if they've been playing together for decades. Deep modal jazz, frenetic, fizzy and energetic, these five tracks are some of the most coveted and sought after songs from the Japanese jazz golden age. This is an incredible piece of curatorial work from BBE.

  11. Yuji Toriyama - "Bay/Sky Provincetown 1977"
  12. Keiichi Oku - "Heat Wave"
  13. Safari - "Day Dream At The Bob's Beach"
Review: Japan's Mule Musiq returns with the second edition of the excellent Midnight In Tokyo series, showcasing their country's capital and its propensity for audio-visual dystopia. Most importantly, the compilation is made up of strictly Japanese talent, and centred on the wider 'house' sound. For instance, the opening "Hikobae", from Genji Sawai, is a majestic bit of Balearic that emanates the word 'downtempo' like nothing else we've seen. But, there is so much to explora and dig into here; our favourites from the packs are Air Suspension Club Band's boogie-leaning "In The Hot City", Jugando's future-jazz bit "Twisty", the effortlessly cool waves of "Samarkand" by Kingkon Paradise, and Om's "Windmill" - probably the best instrumental slice of neo-percussionism that we've heard from the imprint. Recommended.

Review: Since it first hit record stores in 2007, this collection of re-discovered 1970s recordings by vibraphonist and marimba maestro Billy Wooten has become something of an in demand item amongst soul-jazz collectors. Happily, Japanese imprint P-Vine Records has decided to make it available again via a fresh pressing. It remains a fine set, chock full of fuzzy, funk-fuelled live recordings (see the Hammond organ and Vibraphone-heavy brilliance of "Let's Stay Together"), sun-kissed, samba-soaked carnival workouts ("Crown Royale"), gentle bossa compositions (the marimba-boasting brilliance of the laidback and melodious "Summerlight") and superb, sax-happy jazz throw-downs ("Jammin With The Boys").
