D'Hardest (12")
Cat: JAMWAXMAXI II. Rel: 07 Jul 17
  1. D'Hardest (7:38)
  2. D'Hardest (version) (7:36)
Review: Trinidadian eccentric Shadow has seen interest in his 1980s work rocket in recent times. Jamwax continue their love affair with the artist via this essential reissue of his obscure 1980 single "D'Hardest". Like much of his work, the track offers up a take on soca for the synthesizer age, with dusty electronic melodies and drum machine hits working in perfect harmony with his confident vocal and jangling acoustic guitar flourishes. On the flip you'll find the dub style Version, which strips out much of the vocal and using the chorus as a mantra-like chant.

  2. In The World (previously unreleased) (3:42)
  3. Pointe Noire (5:38)
  4. Sangi (unreleased demo mix) (5:32)
Review: When Congolese musician Albert Siassia moved to Paris in the early 1980s, it wasn't long before he joined forces with a local reggae band that he re-christened Tokobina ("Let's Dance" in the Lingala language, fact fans). Together, they released a handful of inspired but now notoriously hard-to-find records, from which two of the tracks here are taken. There's "Mama Africa", an unashamedly positive dancefloor workout full of glistening, South African style guitars, dub disco grooves, bustling, rumba-influenced percussion and Siassia's headline-grabbing vocals, and "Pointe Noire", a superb chunk of new wave/Afro-disco fusion that's arguably even better than the EP's title track. The other two tracks have never before seen the light of day on any format, having been rescued from long forgotten demo cassettes. Of these, it's the Congolese reggae sweetness of "Sangi (Demo Mix)" that hits home hardest.A killer first release from a new label brought to you by one of the Sofrito Crew Hugo Mendes

Cat: BRZ45 08. Rel: 31 May 14
  1. Silvia Leneira
  2. Zazueira
Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil 45s series continues with aplomb... On their eighth outing we find the hugely prolific 60s/70s troubadour Wilson Simonal paying homage to the legendary Jorge Ben with two exemplary cover versions. Whether it's on the soft big band emphasis and teasing fills on "Zazueira" or the upbeat, feel-good swinger "Silva Lenheira" there's a raw clarity to Wilson's vocals that instantly endure; the way he pushes his voice to the very edge of breaking on the high notes and a rich, clear delivery, he's the consummate soulful showman.

  1. Wilson Simonal - "Nem Vem Que Nao Tem" (2:33)
  2. Trio Mocoto - "Nao Adianta" (4:04)
Review: Wilson Simonal - Nem Vem Que Nao Tem
An instant and super catchy samba-MPB hit made famous by its inclusion in Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund's 'City Of God'. This is a firm Simonal favourite at Mr Bongo HQ.

Simonal was a hugely successful singer in the 1960's and early 70's; one of the most popular artists in Brazil infact. 'Nem Vem Que Nao Tem' was previously released on 7" by Odeon in France and Spain, and appears on his 'Alegria, Alegria !!!' LP on Odeon Brazil, released in 1967

Trio Mocoto - Nao Adianta
Trio Mocoto were one of Jorge Ben Jr's main backing bands and highly influential to his sound. They recorded with him on the seminal 'Forca Bruta', 'Negro E Lindo' and 'Tabua de Esmeralda' LP's.

'Nao Adianta' first appeared on Trio Mocoto's self-titled 1977 Arlequim LP. It was subsequently released on 7" in Spain, Portugal and Italy (and we are assuming in France too).

  2. Amor (LCO instrumental rework) (5:56)
  3. Disco Samba (LCO rework) (4:57)
  4. Disco Samba (LCO instrumental rework) (4:57)
Review: The latest missive from the Imagenes camp sees Los Charley's Orchestra rework two tracks from Manana, a Spiteri side project that released one jazz-fusion/samba disco album in 1981. Both "Amor" and "Disco Samba" are taken from that obscure but inspired set, and are here given "vocal" and "instrumental" revisions from the Los Charly's boys. All four revisions hit the spot from start to finish. We're particularly enjoying the spacey synths, low-slung dub disco grooves, fluttering vocals and well-placed delay effects of their "Amor" versions, though many DJs may gravitate towards the rolling, AOR disco bounce of the duo's more celebratory remixes of "Disco Samba".

  2. Taj Mahal (feat Josue Ferreira) (3:36)
Review: LA veteran in London, multi-instrumentalist and all-round legend Claudio Passavanti delivers two blisteringly fresh originals. Loaded with Latin charm, instant sunshine soul and honey-coated vocals of Josue Ferreira, both cuts are exquisitely timed for the summer... "Nacao" is a Brazilian funk with broad nylon string flurries beneath Josue's sentimental command. "Taj Mahal", meanwhile, flips the switch for a full-on carnival anthem with lavish timpani strikes and a vocal chant that echoes with musical memories we didn't know we had. Stunning.

  2. Marisa Rossi - "Deixa Eu Te Amar" (2:47)
Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil 45s series continues its consistently rich vein of form with two more beautifully contrasting - and previously difficult to track down - Brazilian soul jazz fusions from the 70s. Side A is inhabited by one of the era's most interesting individuals. Infamously censored and eventually exiled, Taiguara's chaotic flute, guitar and piano arrangement is a tight weave of melodies, counter melodies and start dynamics. Flip for the classically soul-oriented "Deixa Eu Te Amar" will bright horns, brash drums and a bold vocal from Marisa Rossi. Pow.

  1. Kitschy Jungle (4:23)
  2. Broken Flute (3:49)
Review: Happy birthday to party-starting, funk-fuelled record label Resense, which put out its first 7" single 10 years ago. To kick off a new decade, they've enlisted the services of regular contributor Andy Taylor. He begins with the percussion-rich bounce of "Kitschy Jungle", where original Afro-funk vocals and instrumentation ride a jaunty tropical rhythm track. It's tastefully done, with Taylor's tasty new beats working well with the dusty, sampled elements. Over on the flipside, he opts for a more straightforward Afro-funk feel, lacing punchy horns and reverb-laden flute lines atop a killer funk break and heavily compressed bassline. File under: "dancefloor fire".

  2. Mumudey Mumudey (Natureboy Flako remix) (4:38)
  3. Mumudey Mumudey (Nick The Record remix) (7:44)
Review: When a 12" turns up with a Ron Trent rework on the A-side, we tend to take notice. In this instance, we were particularly curious to hear what the deep house legend had done to "Krumandey", one of the standout cuts from Highlife legend Ebo Taylor's recent album, Yen Ara. Predictably, his version is superb, brilliantly joining the dots between Taylor's soaring Afro-beat, rolling Afro-house and Trent's own sumptuous deep house electronics. Turn to the flipside for two fresh revisions of "Mumduey Mumduey": a jaunty, sunshine-friendly tweak by Japanese producer Natureboy Flako and a heavy Afro-disco version by Nick The Record rich in bowel-bothering sub-bass and spacey deep house chords.

  1. Toni Tornado - "O Jornaleiro"
  2. Som Tres - "Homenagem A Mongo"
Review: Rich gutsy soul from a man who's regularly described as Brazil's James Brown, "O Journalerio" is a blueprint funk jam. Released in 1971 (on his hyper-rare album BR-3) it's all about the orchestrated swing, bluesy groove and Hammond licks so lavish you need to towel on every listen. Flip for Som Tres... An off-shoot of the Sambalanco Trio, it's the sound of Cesar Camargo Mariano controlling a restrained rolling slice of filmic instrumental funk where horns, keys and drums gather momentum with big band drama. Neither have been released on 45" before, making this all the more special.

  1. Marcos Valle - "A Paraiba Nao E Chicago" (4:39)
  2. Don Beto - "Nao Quero Mais" (2:11)
Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing Brazil 45s series, Mr Bongo has decided to change tack. The two tracks showcased here are from the golden age of Brazilian boogie. On the A-side you'll find Marcos Valle's "A Paraiba Nao E Chicago", a largely overlooked cut from his 1981 full-length Vontade De Rever Voce. While not as instantly as infectious as some of his better-known singles, it's still superb; a breezy, blue-eyed soul cut full of rising horns and sweet Portuguese vocals. On the B-side, you'll find Don Beto's 1978 disco-funk jam "Nao Quero Mais", a superb track that was seemingly inspired by the Doobie Brothers' "Long Train Running".

Review: Two premium Latin funk documents on one limited 45, Mr Bongo deliver once again: Marcos Valle needs no introduction to Brazilian music enthusiasts. "Mentira" is a self-cover as Valle takes his 69 classic "Mentira Carioca" and develops the dynamic with a vocal style that's highly reminiscent of Donovan. Flip for Toni Tornado's Black Rio anthem "Me Libertei". Fusing sleazy rock n roll with jazzy Latin soul, madly this is the first time it's ever graced a 45!

  3. On Se Pousse (6:29)
Review: "On Se Pousse", a mazy chunk of life-affirming Afrobeat with Sengalese influences, was one of the standout highlights of Vadou Game's 2016 album, Kidayo. Here it gets a deserved single release, with the near perfect original being complimented by two reworks by Osunlade under the Yoruba Soul guise. On the A-side you'll find his main remix, a loose, warm and organic interpretation that wisely retains almost all of the band's brilliant instrumentation while adding a few hazy deep house touches. Thrillingly, the remix rolls along on jaunty polyrhythms before Osunlade switches to rolling deep house beats midway through. An instrumental version of the fine Yoruba Soul remix completes a brilliant package.

Review: Love Circle returns for a second release, digging deep into the misty past of golden era disco and finding rare gold for the reissue market to rejoice at. This time it's the work of Barry Blue and two projects he produced in the early 80s, lovingly re-edited for maximum dancefloor pleasure by Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold (aka gerry Rooney and Joel Martin). This time, Warp Records and all round UK electronica legend Luke Vibert gives us the delightful oddball groove that is "Africable", Italian DJ Clap! Clap! Review: Another superb afrofunk outing from Renata Do Valle's Hello Sailor as he and Tom Noble dig deep and apply a little cosmic edit craft. Marthe Zambo's horn-tooting, key-tickling soul gun "Alu" gets a little tempo touch, a thrust in the kick department and a lavish synth solo breakdown. Meanwhile on the B the latent funk and insistent swing of Nigerian legend Sonny Okosuns' "My Ancestors" is given a perfect and respectful lick of contemporary production paint and a little cosmic polish. Hello indeed.

Review: Cultures Of Soul's Brasileiro Treasure Box Of Funk & Soul unleashes two more once-rare gems on 45: recently spotted on The Man From Unkle soundtrack, tropicalia fusionist Tommy Ze gets fuzzy and frenetic with "Jimmy Renda Se". With its deep cut, loose string riff, rhythmic Q&A vocals and occasional strings, it's one of many reminders of how out there Tommy was. Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil 45s series gets its rock on with two hairy grooves, both of which have enjoyed the sampler's crafty knives over the years. First up, Tom Ze's "Jimmy Renda-se" rolls with an oily sleazy groove that's peppered by a playful lyrical rhythm that transcends language barriers. Ben's "Take It Easy My Brother Charlie" joins the dots between Samba and very light Rock with all the signatures that made Mr Ben the legend he remains to this day with big vocal harmonies and infectious textures of Brazilian percussion.
