Review: These days, Hamad Kalkaba is a retired Army colonel and track and field athletics administrator in his native Cameroon. Yet back in the mid 1970s, he was a musician with dreams of potential super-stardom, trying to update traditional Cameroonian "Gandjal" music for the funk generation. To that end, he recorded a small number of singles and EPs alongside his backing band, the Golden Sounds. It's those thoroughly obscure and overlooked releases that make up Hamad Kalkaba & The Golden Sounds, a retrospective of his pioneering work. Sitting somewhere between Afro-beat, Afro-funk and Afro-jazz, with a distinctively Cameroonian rhythmic swing, the music showcased on the album is undeniably special.

The Black Isaiah Of Africa: African Woman (limited heavyweight vinyl LP + insert)
Cat: HC 50. Rel: 25 Jul 17
  1. Woman Nature (16:07)
  2. Mr Debtor (14:43)
Review: Naturally, the great Fela Kuti or more recently, people like William Onyeabor usually get all the praise when it comes to the topic of Afrobeat and anything remotely funky from central Africa. However, what many fail to realise is the sheer quantity of untapped gold deep in the heart of those countries and King Bucknor Jr is inarguably very much a part of that hidden treasure chest. 1979's African Woman, also known as The Black Isaiah Of Africa, is a record that holds a mythical status for many, and it's safe to say that for the few lucky diggers who own an original copy of this record, Hot Casa's reissue probably isn't that welcome. However, how could anyone ever deny a fellow music lover of a tune like "Woman Nature" or "Mr Debtor"? The former owns the sexiest percussion roll available on our charts at the moment, not to mention the King's raw and loose vocals, whereas the latter heads deeper into the groove, coming through with a beautifully dubwise groove to fill the air. So hot!

Review: Charlie Kingue Soppo, known simply as Charly Kingson, is a legend of afro-funk who managed to shake the entire continent up with his infamous 1978 LP, Born In Africa. Often forgotten when conversations turn to Afro-dance, and the likes of Tony Allen or Fela Kuti, he has been an incredible source of inspiration to many musicians exploring the funkier side of jazz-dance, and this album itself goes way beyond any traditional notion of tropical discotheque. In fact, tracks like "Makakane Masu" verge on the soulful and the poppy, while "Born In African" itself is a funky groover for the dancefloor. All in all, this is an album which was dying for a re-release, and now you can enjoy it courtesy of the wonderful Africa Seven outlet. Boom!

Review: After 60 blessed years on the planet, Oghene Kologbo has just given the world the record of his life. A strong statement considering he's worked and recorded with all the Afrobeat greats from Kuti to Sunny Ade, but a true one. The collaborative work comprising luminaries such as Tony Allen, Pat Thomas, members of Antibalas and the Afrobeat Academy, Joseph Cotton and many more (including Paris DJs producers Loik and Grant) this is the sound Afrofunk's deepest foundations being built on in an array of fused futurist ways; the blazing flute-led jazz of "Who Is Who", the bluesy subdued storytelling of "Abandon Property", the raw, gutsy tribal loops of "Another Man Ting", the fiery party-punctuated funk of "My People"... This is an incredible investigation and celebration of Africa past, present and future all wrapped up in an immaculate and ambitious package. Apparently there's plenty more to come too...

Review: Last year Strut released the superb debut EP from Kondi Band, a collaboration between blind, Sierra Leone-based thumb piano player Sorie Kondi and American DJ/producer Chief Boima. 12 months on, the duo is ready to release their debut album. It's a wonderfully evocative set that pits Sorie's traditionalist vocals and thumb piano work - informed by years spent busking on the streets of Freetown, Sierra Leone - with Boima's globally informed electronic rhythms and sounds. While the latter's beats and basslines that provide the platform, it's Sorie who emerges as the star, both as vocalist and chief melody-maker. The results are evocative, atmospheric and rarely less than hugely impressive.

Review:  Although the Crammed label is normally more associated with leftfield indie their long running Afrocentric series Congotronics is one of their most respected. Here they aim big and score big with a real coup - the pairing of veteran Congolese musicians Konono No. 1 and Angola-based producer and DJ, Batida. Recorded in his native Portugal, the long player boasts contributions by many African and Afro-influenced artists over eight beguiling tracks, including the hypnotic and otherworldly "Nlele Kalusimbiko".

Review: In some quarters, Tijan Pou Velo is considered something of an unheralded jazz-fusion classic. Here issued on CD for the first time by Heavenly Sweetness, the 1988 album saw trumpeter Edmondy Krater join forces with occasional backing band Zepiss to deliver unique blends of modern Gwo Ka (a style born and popularized in Guadeloupe) with American jazz-funk and electric jazz influences. The resultant music is a humid, highly attractive hotchpotch of Guadeloupe's traditional African and South American influences, and distinctive nods to (then) contemporary European and North American sounds. In other words, it's a tropical fusion masterpiece. Fantastically, this CD edition contains two previously hard-to-find bonus tracks not present on the original vinyl edition.

Review: Belgium based composer, poet and multi-instrumentalist Denis Mpunga formed Eko Kuango in the early '80s. A unique fusion of African rhythms, jazz, subtle synth arrangements with an eastern flavour; they managed to introduce a strong sense of poetry - both musically and lyrically. The band garnered a reasonable following from numerous concerts played during their career, but remained little known except by a few music aficionados around the globe. Now with a newfound interest in their work, Libreville Records is proud to offer the remastered four tracks from the original EP, plus some bonus additions from their 'lost' recording sessions with renowned arranger Arnould Massart.

Review: Ali Kuru took a decision some years ago not to seek publicity, preferring instead to let his music speak for itself. Egzotik, his long awaited debut album, seems to have a fair few stories to tell. Smothered in evocative field recordings made around his home city of Istanbul, the album is notable for fusing exotic Persian instrumentation with grooves and sounds more readily associated with cosmic disco, krautrock, dub, Balearica and Detroit beatdown. On paper, it's an unusual combination that should sound forced or contrived. In reality, it's a brilliant example of an artist with a singular artistic vision achieving his goals. Put it this way: it's amongst the most inspired and enjoyable debut albums we've heard this year.

Review: Rather bizarrely, Fela's London Scene was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 1971, but didn't get a UK release until the mid 1990s. This is the first time it has appeared on wax since. While the legendary Afrobeat pioneer and his equally revered backing band, Africa '70, may have been in unusual surroundings, the music showcased on the album was pure Nigerian Afrobeat gold. With Fela in fine form on the mic, and Africa '70 providing typically punchy, horn-heavy backing, tracks such as "E Gbe Mi O", "Buy Africa", and "Fight To The Finish" are every bit as good as anything they recorded in their Lagos studio. "Who're You", with its' changes of intensity and gentle progressions, is particularly good.
