Review: Brothers Fabio and Marco D'Arcangelo can trace their roots back to Rome's industrial techno revolution of the early 1990s, but are arguably best known for their frequent outings on Rephlex. This EP originally came out on Richard D James and Grant Wilson-Claridge's imprint way back in 1996, when they were still beginning their musical journey. It remains a blisteringly good six-tracker, with highlights including the raw, Aphex Twin-influenced "Somewhere in Time", the guttural, fuzz-drenched post-electro rhythms and Kraftwerk bleeps of "Diagram VII (Milk Mix)", and the pleasingly skuzzy industrial hip-hop of "Skrakt". Arguably best of all, though, is the shimmering "80s Mix" of "Diagram 7", which recasts the track as a melodic chunk of funk-fuelled electro.

  1. Optimal Configuration Daily (6:03)
  2. Collage Voltage (6:23)
  3. Analog Automatism (6:24)
  4. Lacquer Sequence (6:27)
Review: This debut single from Italy's Dark Division makes the plethora of other newcomers seem inexperienced by comparison. Little is known as to the exact identity of this artist, but this EP o the newly crowned Hidden Tapes will no doubt lead to a whole range of new and exciting material in the future. Sounding a but like Demdike Stare on a dub techno tip, the lead tune is a sharply stripped-back techno experiment with a constant buzz in its underbelly, and that's followed by the relatively more aggressive and glitch-friendly slant of "Collage Voltage". On the flip, "Analog Automatism" offers a full suite of noise thrashing and percussive filth, while "Lacquer Sequence" heads into a techno wormhole with no way out - a hollow, cavernous field of distortion wraps around twisted beats and dubwise echo trickery. A serious first release from Dark Division.

Review: Repitch are back everyone, look out! Ascion, D. Carbone and Shapednoise team up with longtime allies AnD on the final instalment of the Features series and it's as intense as you'd expect: not for the faint of heart! Five cuts of brutalist, bleak and greyscale modern industrial music that bears all the trademarks of each individual producer's sound. From harsh metallic textures and grating modular snarls to the most overdriven kick drums and sinister sci-fi atmospheres. Is this posse going out all guns blazing? You'd better believe it!

Review: Following two years spent hiding in the shadows, audio hacker Denial of Service returns to Film with another selection of raw, mind-altering gems. He begins with the thrillingly distorted, industrial electro bounce of "Contour & Shape (2016 Version)", before joining the dots between Autehcre and Throbbing Gristle on "Ak Manto". A quick bout of mutant ambient weirdness follows, before grandiose techno workout "Onryo" kicks off side B with a bang. His love of metallic, in-your-face percussion, spooky spoken word samples and ghostly textures comes to the fore on "Goryo", before another brilliantly strange sound collage - with, it should be noted, its own rhythmic pulse - rounds off an impressively forthright EP.

  2. Work Terminal (OH revision) (6:53)
  3. Work Terminal (Solvent version) (7:11)
  4. Work Terminal (Metro Tekno version) (6:31)
Review: Digital Poodle are one of those outfits from the 1980's who happened to stumble onto techno by accident, focusing on making deadly, driving songs rather than fitting into a genre or style. Alongside them there are the likes of Psychik Warriors Ov Goia and a few others, but this stuff is pretty damn hard to come by, and releases like this are few and far between. The impressive Suction label out of Canada has decided to reissue their "Work Terminal" tune - a screeching, venomous bit of screamo EBM - backed by a trio of remixes. OH transform "Work Terminal" into a more direct techno bullet with subtle swarms of the original's screams, while Solvent give it a more aggressive reshape a-la electro. It's the Metro Tekno version that gets our attention, though, and those heavy percussion patterns must surely be total winners on the sound system.

Review: Once every three or four years, Kassem Mosse drops a new record under a new alias. We've loved the producer's mystique, which he has retained since day 1, because it is representative of a true artist and musician, evolving new ideas while remaining grounded in a particular aesthetic that is personal to him. This debut DJ Residue 12" drops on Will Bankhead's TTT, whom he has kept tight relations with over the years, and has hit us pretty hard. In fact, it is the most relevant depiction of techno, or general warehouse music, that we have heard this year, shifting and morphing endlessly, going from the regular to the utterly insane with pure ease. Sludgy beats, eerie atmospherics, and Mosse's intricate percussion patterns form a beautifully dark variety of noise music. Recommended, as per usual.

  3. Bielefel Murder Boys - "What The Fuck Is Wrong With Storage Company These Days" (5:14)
  4. 188HaightStreet - "Necklace Of Heads" (6:44)
Review: The first release on the freshly minted Heteroerotic Asypyxiation imprint delivers a veritable smorgasbord of skewed, left-of-centre oddness shot through with decaying, post-industrial intent. For proof, check the hard-to-define, end-of-days murkiness of DNAonDNA's claustrophobic, end-of-days opener "No Thanks, I'd Rather Stay In The Ivory Tower" (kind of like Cabaret Voltaire making broken beat in a dungeon) and the nightmarish, psychedelic exotica of 188HaightStreet's wonky, Arabic techno shuffler "Necklace of Heads". In between, you'll find the wild-eyed, distorted tribal techno stomp of Antonia's "Untitled 99" and the fizzing drums and twisted, elongated analogue bass of "What The Fuck Is Wrong With Storage Company These Days" by Bielefeld Murder Boys. Brilliantly bonkers.

Review: Latest in the run of downright deviant activities from the Contort Yourself camp is this new collection of old and new industrial tinged bangers, leading in with the excellent noirish heat of Eindkrak's slow-stepping "Shawarma". Andromeda Complex's mid-90s rhythm-fest sits in stark, functional contrast before GDL's own contemporary rhythm science sends the record spinning in a reverie of surprisingly light-footed percussion. Circling Vultures are too enjoying the mean tempered intensity of focused drum machine programming before Klankman rounds the record off with a slightly squelchy remix of Andromeda Complex's "The Servant".

Review: It's no surprise that Holland's Ekman has sprung up on the Bedouin label. After all, the imprint proposes a very similar sort of deal to the likes of Berceuse Heroique. Both labels love dark iconography and mood sounds; while it is clearly not to everyone's taste, at least they try hard. Ekman rocks up with four nasty cuts, the first "Track 1" attacking the speakers with a brutal shade of distorted bass and wild bass drumming, while "Track 2" adds in a little 303 nuttiness for good measure. On the flip, "Track 3" gargles its gnarly acidity over a layer of bubbling synths and metallic percussion, leaving "Track 4" to provide some much needed, and firmly stripped-down, beat flexing. Heavy gear, as expected.

Review: Yu Asaeda's been putting out a whole range of quality, bass-centric sounds under the name ENA since the late 2000s, but these have come out on a rather sporadic basis. Appearances for the infamous 7even Recordings was followed by material on Samurai Horo, the excellent Hidden Hawaii and, more recently, the Samurai label's offshoot, Horo. Divided: Body is so much more than a mere 'bass' EP, and it actually manages to veer off into some pretty strange and imperceptible sounds that remind us of the material emanating from the PAN consortium. For instance, the opening "11th Divided" manages to create a raw, loose groove out of fractured synth sounds, which is followed up nicely by the swarming drones operating in the higher ends of "12th Divided". Over on the flip, "13th Divided" launches a subtle yet hefty groove made up of what sound like bass pops made from a monophonic synth, which leaves "14th Divided" to linger in its dreary pool of fuzzy drones and washed-up sonics. A massive, merited TIP!

Review: Current heroes of the industrial techno sound here tend to focus on the industrial side of things for The Cast Project: a vinyl affair from Los Angeles based on the collective sounds from a faction of artists. They are said to gather a few artists; each of them providing several unique audio samples, clips and/or field recordings that best define their sound. They then collect the samples from each artist and redistribute them to the artists as a master pack, at which point they create a unique track. First up fellow Los Angeleno Luis Flores delivers the grinding and guttural first offering, while 138 then delivers some impressive Autechre styled IDM on his/her effort. On the flip, Dutch terroriser Bas Mooy delivers a furious and powerful warehouse techno stormer that blows the doors off as always. Finally Serbian duo Ontal deliver some more of their typically contorted takes on techno.

Review: Gruth incorporates pitch black and aggressive textures into his sonic palette. Incorporating techno, ambient and industrial, but mainly rooted in the Nordic darkness of metal - this is the experimental music project of Juha Puupera. Drawing further influence from UK sound system culture and Italian 'Giallo' of the '70s, he's joined by homeboy Hannu Ikola (Subself/Ether) who is a techno DJ and producer on this EP. It features the grinding and guttural sludge techno deconstruction of "Severely Decomposed" and "Disgorged Viscera" on the A side. The pitch black techno of "Ke Jawenan Deserration" and the haunting dark ambient soundscape "Futile Demise" where Gruth is joined by Helsinki-based violinist and sound designer KuJo.

  5. Hunting Lodge - "De Omnibus Dubitandum" (Gotshell remix) (5:35)
Review: Contort Yourself continues to explore the crossover between decrepit 80s industrial and the modern artists drawing inspiration from those heady, experimental times, and the results are as thrilling as ever. Haydee's "No Gouvernance" is a brutal charge of drums and distorted yelps, while 1983 jam "De Omnibus Dubitandum" by Hunting Lodge fuses layers of distortion and proto acid with live bass and brittle drums. Catriel lays out a sinister but seductive message on "Nbdymksmefeellowlikeudo", Giant Swan bring their raucous avant-techno styles to "Dare" and then Gotshell remix Hunting Lodge into a thunderous industrial techno charge.

Review: William J.Youngman's Headless Horseman project has created a new and exciting techno sound that was only an offshoot of EBM and industrial in years past. Stepping out of his own imprint, the dark horseman lands on Tommy Four Seven's excellent 47 label, tearing through the speakers from the get-go thanks to the toxic sounds of "Revelation", and the even nastier sway of "Concussion". Metallic and hard-nosed in absolutely every way, "Locust" follows up on that with a menacing pounce of beats and cavernous bass, while "Gravity" breaks the techno groove for something much more in line with the likes of Powell's Diagonal output. Big boy sounds.

Review: Lyon's Julien Viallet, only recently baptised under the HLM38 moniker, lands with his debut EP for France's KUMP label, making it the imprint's second EP to date. Representative of the cultural shift that has taken France over nowadays, "Illicite Song" is a wonderfully dextrous blend of Eastern chimes and slow, meandering beat music that only subtly references techno or house. "French Dudu" is a little more tech-friendly, albeit grounded in the same form of percussive experimentation, while "Exit" references the sounds of bands like Throbbing Gristle, spewing industrial oddities from every orifice. Remixes come from Front De Cadeaux and Kris Baha, respectively, dropping yet more additive rhythms to the collection. Recommended!

Review: If you hadn't heard of Imaginary Forces before his release on Bedouin back in October, you'll be pleased to hear that he has been active since the late 2000's, and has also put out a tonne of quality music through his Sleep Codes label. He's up on Rabit's Halcyon Veil to kick start the label's 2016, and he's come through with five jaw-dropping slices of industrial grit-funk. From "And What?" to "Make Ends Meet", the dude drops a barrel-load of sic-fi rhythms, all charged with a distinctive noise edge to blow your speakers out. Think Prurient meets Aaron Dilloway, or Joe from Hessle Audio having a not-so-polite conversation with Vereker. It's hot, heavy, and violent.

Review: Whatever Makes You Feel Safe is a collaboration between Canadian producer and singer Marie Davidson and Berlin based Ukrainian sound designer Invisible Church. They met in Montreal during Red Bull Music Academy festival and shared the idea of exploring the concept of feeling safe both on a personal level and as a part of society. Quite different from what you'd usually associate with Davidson but still worthy of your attention all the same. Beginning on the A side with "Collage" featuring some chilling drone experiments over textural sound design and field recordings which allow Davidson's haunting vocals to carry the track further into the void. Sounds like a cross between OAKE and Lustmord. Next up "Never Release The Tension" delves further into pitch black territory on this contorted downbeat industrial thriller. Finally on the flip, we've got an epic 10 minutes of haunting esoterica in the form of "Ten Years" and features Theo Parrish on cymbals! The label recommends it as for fans the late Mika Vainio, Black Rain, CTI, and the Bladerunner OST. Pretty on point, if we do say so ourselves!

Review: The JBLA outfit finally land on Desire with a supremely awaited EP that's shimmering with gritty hardware flair and squelching noise trickery. The title track is a rampant, percussion-driven, post-punk tool and is hotly rewired by none other than LIES affiliates, Ron Morelli and Svengalisghost, who turn in a twisted, metallic version of the original - oscillating atmospherics and a minimalistic kick-hat form an alluring bundle of a groove. "Night With Potential" is a lo-fi kinda tune, with aqueous melodies and hazy landscapes. Our favourite LIES protege, Vereker goes in for the total kill on the remix, creating a nasty, cacophonous and industrial time-bomb for the end of days - this guys has plenty of tricks up his sleeve, apparently. A cop-on-site kinda EP, really...
