Review: Riddle us this - just what is the deal with Iceland? Left alone to float on the North Atlantic's distinctly unwelcoming and ferociously unforgiving waves, aesthetically and culturally it's a nation very much of its own mind, with its own icons and mythology. Take Asgeir Trausti Einarsson, for example.

The haunting singer-songwriter may still be unfamiliar to many English-speaking listeners despite laying claim to some startling statistics. His debut album, "Dird i daudabogn" became the fastest selling record ever in his frosty homeland, outdoing the likes of Bjork and Sigur Ros. Now he's back for a third outing, and it's one of the most Icelandic things you'll hear all year. Packed with folksy roots and immersive atmospheres, you can almost feel the wild winds blowing gales across barren, near-lunar landscapes. Recorded using just a guitar, keyboard and basic kit, in a summerhouse during the bleak midwinter, it's hugely effective stuff.

  10. Last Things First (3:47)
Review: Change lies at the very heart of "Carousel", the third and perhaps most-eagerly anticipated Clock Opera album to date. After all, it has been a long time coming. Spurred on by the personal experiences of Guy Connelly, if you're looking for something to buy loved ones as they enter parenthood for the first time, this may be it.

That's not a reference to dad rock or housewife pop. In the grand scheme of electronic music this is certainly at the safer end, informed by Brian Eno's ambience or "Homogenic"-era Bjork as much as sprawling, classically-informed science fiction. But it's anything but throwaway. Instead, it's the overarching themes that mark this one out as the ideal gift for those in periods of great transition. It looks at the challenges of newfound fatherhood, considers sacrifices necessary to alter behavioural patterns and asks what identity really means. Profound stuff.

  10. Beneath The Floors (5:08)
Review: Talk about narrative songwriting. Throughout this latest and arguably deepest effort from Deliluh we are introduced to myriad characters, each central to their individual chapter, transitions between artistically diverse songs made smooth through tape hisses, tense string refrains and similar apparatus. The overall themes centre on inner conflict and cross-generational disharmony. In order to bring those subjects to the fore we have atmospheric, cinematic instrumentals like "Falcon Scott Trail", commanding post punk ("Lickspittle: A Nut In The Paste", "Con Art Inc", "Incantessa") and soothing balladry ("Hangman's Keep"). Fans won't be too surprised to hear this - the outfit in question are renowned for their storytelling abilities and exploring multiple directions - while newcomers can rest assured they're being introduced to a troupe on top of their game. A worthy second act to "Oath of Intent", to say the least.

  3. Jungle Groove (5:34)
  4. Boogie Meltdown (4:10)
Review: So far we've yet to hear a duff track or release from Flamingo Pier, a hybrid Anglo-Kiwi crew whose vibrant and colourful music combines a plethora of musical influences in pursuit of disco-fired dancefloor gold. There's tons of goodness to be found throughout their latest collection of cuts, from the drowsy, Holy Ghost style deep disco warmth of opener "Tripping Up", to the sprightly '80s electrofunk brilliance of "Boogie Meltdown". Sandwiched in between you'll find two more heaters: the kaleidoscopic, synth-heavy nu-disco cheeriness of "Indigo" and "Jungle Groove", a tight and throbbing proto-house number that sounds like the missing link between Paul Simpson and Escort.

  15. War Is Looming (4:42)
Review: With its wildly versatile, open-minded but business-driven music industry, the UK can't help but fall victim to the hype circus from time to time. Bands garner praise, and before you know it there's a debut album out everyone is telling you to fall in love with, despite the fact you know there's nothing to adore.

Fear not, HMLTD early adopters, we also know the London quintet are every bit as good as the words and phrases talking them up, and prove it on this inaugural long form. To ignore influences of glam rock and new romanticism is to disregard many of the troupe's stylistic traits, but those are really only half the story. Diving into "West Of Eden" is like welcoming all - or at least many - of Britain's contemporary sounds into your personal space, from trap and electro to post punk and guitar artiness. Exceptional stuff we'll leave you to explore further.

Review: Prepare to be confounded and confused, but more importantly hugely entertained. If this is your first encounter with The Homesick let's put it like this - the Dutch guitar-driven eccentrics baffled plenty with their debut long form, 2017's "Youth Hunt", and are back on similarly leftfield form here.

In many ways "The Big Exercise" is a more logical record, and it's just as musically accomplished. Calling on elements of post punk and epic wall-of-sound fare, while still managing to include folksy nuances (or even full tracks, such as opener "What's In Store"), it's the fact the band set these instrumentations to such bizarre themes that makes the whole thing so unexpected. But on this second album subject matters are more coherent and contextualised, from struggling with sleep paralysis to that eternal sense of longing. It's an enormously inventive work by an outfit that don't seem to care about boundaries or genre rules.

  12. Alternative Facts (9:05)
Review: It's not that easy to put your finger on Mush's sound. At times frenetic without being intense, at other moments locked in a sweaty funk, the Leeds outfit certainly seem at home on the ever-reliable Memphis Industries label. Those looking for immediate guitar hooks set in a lo-fi-ish landscape should be in their element.

There's also more than a hint at where they're coming from politically, charting the time of turmoil their native Britain is stuck in on fare such as "Hey Gammonhead!". Moving past the dreaded B-word, the likes of "Existential Dread" almost positions them in a skate-blues guise, the hugely topical "Gig Economy" conjures the propulsive work rate of anyone who has to get to their next task fast in order to make ends meet, while "No Signal In The Paddock" plays with rhythm and time effectively. A rock album very much of our moment in history.

Review: Some bands just can't be kept down, not that we'd want to try so the point is perhaps hard to prove. Self-doubt aside, Nada Surf are one of those groups, veterans of the Brooklyn indie rock scene that don't seem to have a bad album in them, "Never Not Together" is their glorious ninth, and it's just as powerful, optimistic yet reflective as ever.

Throughout their oeuvre the outfit have always felt as though they were in search of something, not that there are any sonic elements missing. Here again we can't help but feel a tangible yearning, that speaks to our hearts and feet as one. The propellant rhythm but sparse instrumentation on "So Much Love", the evolution of "Mathilda" from humble intro to full-throttle riff march are just two examples that invoke a sense of journey, which sounds so good. As such here's hoping they never reach that destination.
