Common Sense
Common Sense (limited 12")
Cat: YR 0098LPB. Rel: 03 Aug 23
Common Sense (4:00)
Lick The Bag (3:21)
Sentinel Island (3:45)
Blue (3:21)
Review: First popping up on our radar in 2020 - or rather hurling itself onto it with all the subtlety punk can muster - Common Sense gets a reissue and not before time. Outspoken but never outgunned, Swedes Viagra Boys rightly courted some serious praise with 2022's album, Cave World, so it makes sense to revisit this epic EP in a bid to get newcomers acquainted with what came before. Opening on the title number, things may not sound quite as you'd expect. While known for their ability to wield bloody-lipped chargers, 'Common Sense' owes as much to shoegaze and synth rock as it does punk variants, immediately marking the outfit out as something not quite so easy to define. Nevertheless, 'Lick the Bang' is straight up topless sweatbox material, and 'Sentinel Island' centres our brains on wonderfully distorted and frayed riffs. Closing on the slow, nostalgia-hued 'Blue', it's quite the collection.

Review: Are there many mixes as seminal as this one? When Soulwax adopted their 2 Many DJs alias for the landmark As Heard On Radio Soulwax series, they heralded a new era of genre-hopping, headsy blending that was fun and fearless in equal measure. It's absolutely of its time, capturing the electroclash zeitgeist and throwing in crowd-pleasing pop nous without diluting the product, and quite simply Pt 2 is one of the best party sets you're ever likely to hear. Released in 2002 and sounding as fresh and inspired as it did 20 years ago, this is an essential item for anyone who takes the art of the mash-up seriously.

Review: Icelandic classical, experimental and soundtrack composer Olafur Arnalds steps away from the loops and Broadchurch OSTs to conjure yet another sublime LNT saga. Carefully balancing between contemporary odysseys ("Jomsvikingarimur"), dense futuristic electronic weaves ("Last Remnants"), fuzzy 22nd century pop ("A Noise") sludgy cosmic funk ("Jasmine") and introspective soul ("Our Love Comes Back"), Olafur blows wave after woozy wave of soft sonic conjurations in a way that's broad, detailed and cleverly considered. Good night.

Review: After their first round was such a success, Gary Crowley and Jim Lahat have been tasked with pulling together another essential collection of punk and new wave from the 70s and 80s, and you can rest assured they've done it again. There are some major, familiar names here like The Clash, The Slits and Ramones, but there's also a hell of a lot of rare delights from the likes of The Limit, The Art Attacks and The Newtown Neurotics. Musically, there's plenty of range too from spiky three-chord pub rock and punk through to Linton Kewsi Johnson and Dennis Bovell's crossover dub as Poet & The Roots. That's just a tiny overview of this mammoth six-disc set, which takes you deep into the heart of a vital, thrilling period in alternative music.

Review: Doing just what it says on the tin, Next Wave Acid Punk is a brand new compilation LP set charting, well, the next wave of acid punk (and beyond), bringing together contributions in the myriad subcategories of EBM, new beat and dark disco under one contemporary umbrella. Charting over 40 years of dark club music compiled and curated by Berlin-based Musician and DJ Luca Venezia aka Curses, this is a comprehensive look-in at a deviant leather-laden idea bound in sound, melting barriers between new and old, sub and dom.

Review: Berlin-based artist Curses is committed to the dark side of the dancefloor as an artist, and as this series on Eskimo proves he's also an authority on the seedier side of selecting, too. The first volume of Next Wave Acid Punx was a knockout success and so he's back for another round from the seemingly unending pools of EBM, industrial, synth-pop and minimal wave spanning the 80s through to the modern day. Given the sheer size of the compilation (covering no less than 49 tracks) it has to be split across separate chapters, with this double vinyl serving as Chapter 2 and featuring creepy masterpieces from the likes of Boytronic, Matrixxman and Dina Summer.

Review: The Next Wave Acid Punx compilation series is proving to be a vital source of nicely seedy, sinewy electronics from bygone eras and the modern day alike. Commissioned by Eskimo, Berlin-based artist Curses enlists his expansive knowledge to gather together vast volumes of music from EBM, minimal wave, industrial and elsewhere, and then the accompanying physical releases sift through the data to present various chapters. This third wedge of the second compilation features modern provocateurs like Autumns, Silent Servant and Nuovo Testamento, remixed by Curses himself.

Review: When Eskimo first invited New York-born, Berlin-based Curses to compile Next Wave Acid Punx, they might not have known what they were letting themselves in for. As we reach part Deux, there's no doubt they signed up to sift through a staggering volume of EBM, industrial, minimal wave and electro from the darker side of the dancefloor. Taking in 49 tracks in total, this authoritative collection spreads across three CDs and features old legends like Throbbing Gristle alongside newer wave sonic deviants like The Hacker, with so much more ground covered in between. Consider this monumental compilation a homing beacon for all creatures of the night.

Review: Sky Girl is the work of two noted (but arguably under-appreciated) crate diggers, DJ Sundae and Julien Dechery, and gathers together a veritable treasure trove of obscure material loosely connected by (in the label's own words) "the same longing sentiment". Its' fifteen tracks touch on a variety of hazy, down-tempo styles, and were recorded at various points between 1961 and '91. There's much to admire throughout, from the folksy psychedelic pop of The Rising Storm's "Frozen Laughter", and spoken word eccentricity of Scott Seskind's "I Remember", to the dreamy, eyes-closed ambience of Nini Raviolette & Hugo Weris' "Slow" and string-laden samba-folk of Nora Guthrie's "Home Before Dark".

Review: .Following the success of his Sunday Morning, Coming Down compilation, Ace Records has asked Bobby Gillespie to put together a follow-up. This time round, the Primal Scream frontman has decided to showcase tracks he turns to "for solace, comfort and empathy" during the Scottish band's various tours. Offering a mix of country, blues, Americana, psychedelia and soul, the selected songs - including inspired efforts by Willie Nelson, Lee Hazelwood, Al Green, the Chi-Lites, Ry Cooder and Kate & Anna McGringle (whose 'Heart Like a Wheel' is a genuinely tender and heart-aching affair) - more than deliver on the album's conceptual premise, offering equal amounts of emotion and entertainment.

Review: Treading an eclectic path through a twenty year career that's taken in everything from Detroit techno to vintage French ye-ye, from breakbeat-driven floor-fillers to krautrock epiphanies, David Holmes has made his name predominantly as an exemplary crate-digger and aesthete, whether soundtracking Steven Soderbergh movies or dishing our albums of his own. Thus, it comes as no surprise that this compilation - marking something of a personal journey for Holmes - is reflective of his status as an exemplary man of taste. Whether dispensing classics by the likes of David Crosby or Buddy Holly, unreleased original solo material or killer obscurities from everyone from modular synthesis cultist Keith Fullerton Whitman to Hollywood legend Jeff Bridges, this stylish nocturnal travelogue puts the listener resolutely in safe hands.

Review: Khruangbin might be the most logical and fitting choice for a Late Night Tales compilation in recent memory. The Texan psychedelic chill artists have always had a sense of the exploratory and unknown running through their blissful grooves, and the fundamental idea behind this series was always about opening up doors to new musical discoveries for listeners.

In many ways, the Houston trio have gone above and beyond. Melding a breadth of sounds that have emerged from an equally diverse set of cultures, we visit Hindi-disco, South Korean rock, African bass, Belarusian folk. Capped off with an exclusive version of Kool & The Gang's 'Summer Madness' conceived by the compilers themselves, it's a case of 15 gateway tracks all of which belong to artists and genres that are crying out for you to dive in.

Review: McCartney III was the18th solo album by legendary musician and former Beatle Paul McCartney. Imagined is the remix version that came digitally back in April and now lands on vinyl. The artists chosen to remix were all selected by McCartney himself and are said to feature "friends, fans, and brand new acquaintances." The record has picked up plenty of positive reviews already and that should be no surprise given the heavyweights included. The likes of Beck, Khruangbin, Dev Hynes, Ed O'Brien, Damon Albarn, Josh Homme, Anderson .Paak, Robert Del Naja, and Idris Elba all make for a contemporary mix with diverse results.

Review: Unusually, Optimo's JD Twitch and Jonny Wilkes have taken the unusual step of not announcing the tracklist for their two-part 25th anniversary compilation ahead of release. Ordering, then, requires a leap of faith, but given the sheer breadth, diversity and quality of the music they've been playing over the last quarter of a decade, there's no doubt we're in safe hands. It's not a 'best of Optimo anthems' collection, or merely a bunch of peak-time favourites; instead, we're promised a mixture of unusual warm-up favourites and confirmed dancefloor workouts in a wide range of style that have long been favourites of the two Glasgow-based DJs - many of which will, inevitably, be slept-on, forgotten or under-appreciated gems.

Review: Optimo's JD Twitch and Jonny Wilkes, undoubtedly the UK's most fearless and on-point 'anything goes' DJs, have spent a quarter of a decade building trust with their audience. You can never tell what they might play when you turn up at one of their events, but you know it will be inspired, high-quality, and most likely make you want to dance. With their two-part 25th anniversary compilation (this is part two), they've taken a similar approach, keeping the track-list under wraps until release day while promising a mix of oddball warm-up favourites and floor-focused tracks they love and have played at various points since the start of the century. Given their track record, we can expect forgotten gems, left-of-centre anti-anthems, and unusual party-starting delights.

Review: House music exploded in the UK in 1987 and continued to blow up in the ensuing summers. But with all the high energy parties and ever more visceral rave sounds, people needed a break, and so it was that in February of 1990 the KLF invented new slowed down after-sounds on their Chill Out mix. This collection gathers best sub 100bpm cuts form that time, as assembled by Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley. Fun fact - the artwork for the LP is a picture from the new book on acid house by photographer Dave Swindells which is well worth copping if you can.

Review: Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs have more than proven their music knowledge across a stellar run of prior compilations, including The Daisy Age, Fell From The Sun and English Weather. This time around, they're tapping into the freeform climes of the late 70s and early 80s, as punk exploded and a myriad of bands channelled the unique, downcast mood of Britain into wildly creative, nervously urgent songs. Across four sides we take in all manner of cult selections and outer limits largely in the loose fit realm of post-punk. It's flawlessly selected and programmed - another reminder of how immersive a proper compilation can be.

Review: On his latest compilation for Ace, St Etienne's Bob Stanley has chosen to evoke memories of the summer of 1976, when Britain sweltered under a heatwave and those under the age of 16 felt like the school holidays went on forever. Stanley's vision is undoubtedly a nostalgic one, with many of his on-point musical selections seemingly coming with their own opaque, easy listening-tinged sepia hue (see Lynsey de Paul's 'Sugar Shuffle' and Jefferson Starship's hazy 'Miracles'). Highlights are plentiful, from the jammed-out Clavinet solos of Simon Park's 'Stoned Out' and the soul sweetness of Shuggie Otis's 'Inspiration Information', to the Bob James style jazz-funk of John Cameron's 'Liquid Sunshine', and the bubbly Brazilian bliss of Azymuth's 'Montreal City'.

The collection here is impressively broad and varied, covering Chvrches, Ryan Adams, Kelly Lee Owens, Shamir and more. The duo's approach to the covers is creative and reinventive, and on the more stripped back covers the vocal work from the Quin sisters has the space to take centre stage and shine, showing just how much the duo have developed since their initial cover record.

Review: The Vacant Lots is a Brooklyn based duo who drops their new album this Autumn. It was written under isolation during the Covid pandemic and is quite possibly Jared Artaud and Brian MacFadyen's best work yet. The eight tunes might be minimal in design but they are maximum in intent and intensity with minimalist post-punk/synth-pop sounds all coming on strong. Over the top of the sounds comes smart, pithy lyrics with plenty of guitar agues and a darkness that brings to mind New Order and Jesus And Mary Chain. Add in the ever present spirt of New York and you have a fine album.

Review: The US took to The Clash much more than their main rivals the Sex Pistols, not least because the latter were already imploding by the time they reched its shores. Strummer and co's regular visits to New York were always a media event - Martin Scorcese even invited them to make cameo appearanmces in his 'King of Comedy' on one - and always accompanied by incendiary live shows. This one, recorded for radio at The Palladium in September 79, is from the relatively early part of their career, harder rocking than some although there is a reggae cover in the shape of 'Police and Thieves' even here, while mainly it's hard hitting guitar slinging anthems like 'I Fought The Law' and 'London Calling'.

Review: "Father Of The Bride", Vampire Weekend's first album for six long years, has been receiving praise across the board from critics. It's been variously described as a "modern California pop masterpiece", a "scrapbook of brilliant ideas" and "the band's magnum opus". To our ears, it's certainly joyous and celebratory, with the acclaimed New York band wrapping their usual punchy-indie pop in subtle and not so subtle nods towards everything from Flamenco and Country music, to mournful piano ballads, excitable electronic indie-dance and 1960s baroque pop. In other words, it's a giddy collection of inventive, enjoyable songs that boasts the same eclectic, anything-goes swagger as the Beatles "White Album" or other similar wide-ranging sets.

Review: Sharon Van Etten is in a philosophical mood on her sixth album, We've Been Going About This All Wrong, offering up a series of songs concerned with considering "how we feel, mourn and reclaim our agency when we think the world may be falling apart". While her lyrical inspirations may be weighty, the American singer-songwriter has a knack of cloaking her deeply personal words - delivered emotively, as you'd expect - in beautiful arrangements. Some of these bristle with her trademark "dark drums" and breath-takingly poignant synth sounds, while others are sparse and stripped-back, with just an acoustic guitar backing Van Etten's voice. She's kept the album under wraps - refusing, surprisingly, to release any teaser singles - but it's definitely been worth the wait.

Review: After two years of anxiety and uncertainty, we all have some processing to do right now. In many ways, vast chunks of We've Been Going About This All Wrong represents Sharon Van Etten doing just that, or at least preparing herself, and her family, for the inevitable jumping back on the merry-go-round of life, and specifically life in the music industry. The US singer-songwriter, who has, with enviable passion and determination, carved out a place for herself in the upper echelons of American pop-rock talent, admitted to littering this latest, and typically commanding and spectacular record, with messages to her son at a time when tours once again beckon and threaten to upend an extended period of close intimacy in lockdowns. That point aside, this is classic Van Etten - vocals approaching operatic, huge, sweeping contemporary symphonies going straight for the heart and celluloid soundtrack.

Review: There is, quite simply, so much to like about Vanishing Twin. In many ways they can be your everything, providing that everything is sitting in a room packed with psychedelic patterns, contemplating mind expansion beyond opioids. If you're looking for abrasive sounds, this ain't for you. However, those searching for a woozy combination of 1960s hippy and weird prog folk will find themselves at home.

Even that description feels reductive. 'Light Vessel', for example, sounds like the unearthed tapes from electro-pop year zero. Or not. 'Tub Erupt' is a spy film intro on adrenalin, while 'The Lift' comes across like a religious cult got lost and wound up at Woodstock. Or maybe Woodstock was the cult? Either way this is one of those 'buckle up' jobs.

Review: The experimental supergroup Vanishing Twin - named after its founding member Cathy Lucas' experience of the eponymous "syndrome" after her identical twin sister was absorbed in utero - have kept up a steady stream of danceable dream pop, cantankerous-contemporary-cosmic, and prodding post-punk since at least 2015. Now their newest album Afternoon X seeks again to break the mould, having been built upon "a vast constellation of instruments, samples, and unclaimed sources", conjuring comparisons to David Axelrod and Scott Walker. Though the songs throughout still get at that feeling of janky dreaminess that Vanishing Twin always nail, it's this reclamation of long-disused cultural reference points - a musical-ideal version of squatting, if you will - that makes this album special.

Review: Italia Synthetica 1981-1985 is a reissue of a 2013 compilation which details a selection of synthpop, new wave and minimal electronic bands and artists from Italy in the early 80s. Spittle Records did divine work in sourcing and collating this collection ten years ago, not least since it's what they do best. Conceived and presented by veteran Italian singer and producer and beloved member of the scene himself - Fred Ventura - highlights like Neon's 'Lobotomy' and Actor's Studio's 'Dancing Alone' do well to represent the punkish and slapdash attitude of this flourishing yet short-lived scene. It nevertheless paved the way for the rich musical landscape Italy's underground enjoys to this day.

Review: In many ways, Strum & Thrum is the antithesis to most rarity compilations. Whereas the majority go for the 'unearthing of cool' approach, the Capture Tracks label has opted to collate a huge play list of tunes that really aren't that cool at all. It does, however, reflect the roots and influences of the imprint's roster artists, and a specific time and scene in the history of American indie rock that is often overlooked. Namely one that ignored much of the unkempt and raw energy that was pervading guitar music's underground at the moment.

It's also a far cry from the stadium-cramming, permed hair of the heavy rock and formative metal scene, too. Instead, we have a long list of relatively obscure and half-remembered bands that took inspiration from the past. And by that we mean much 1960s and early-1970s classic rock, a distinctly blues-free, anti-punk sound that's going to please many, while failing to register with the others.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Post punk and dance music can be perfect bedmates simply because they are so often one and the same thing. Or rather the former is a form of the latter, with post punk's audio iconography frequently involving a rolling approach to rhythms, subtleties given room to shine and a sense of constant build about the atmospherics. All of which are also cornerstones of electronic club sounds, too.

Here then Soul Jazz adds to its extensive and consistently-impressive back catalogue of genre-themed compilations with a collection of tracks that take their lead from electro pop, industrial, punk, techno and more. Featuring a host of contemporary artists, including LA DIYers Automatic, German sonic artists Toresch and Philippines-via-California cult hero Vex Ruffin, it's refreshingly modern proof of how vital this stylistic meeting point is.

Review: Although most associated with punk thanks to his now canonical history of the movement, England's Dreaming, Jon Savage has always had far broader taste than most - not to mention an acute sense that the late 1970s were aa genuinely exciting musical free-for-all that paved the way for much of what came next. This excellent double-disc compilation gives a taste of what he was listening to in that period, moving between reggae, dub (the Revolutionaries, Joe Gibbs & The Professionals), throbbing Euro-disco (Space, Giorgio Moroder), American garage-rock (Iggy Pop), spaced-out spoken word eccentricity (John Cooper Clarke), formative new wave synth-pop (The Normal, The Human League), industrial (Cabaret Voltaire), punk (and lots of it), and much more besides.

Review: There's an awful lot going on here, and as such plenty to talk about. Alternative Funk: Volume 1 is both a compilation and reissue, with the original outing landing on cassette in the early-1980s on VP231, a label set up by Pacific 231, AKA Pierre Jolivet. The albums were the brainchild of Axel Kyrou and Francis Man, founders of the legendary Vox Populi!, and their aim was to showcase far out sounds, at least som of which were their own.

What we have in the modern iteration is a snapshot of that expansive and often hallucinatory aural odyssey, with seminal and lesser known artists resting side-by-side on the track list. Stylistically broad, running the gamut from dub percussion to cold wave and industrial, it's yet more evidence of just how fertile a decade the 80s were.

Review: It's hard not to adore the Speedy Wunderground concept. Faff-free since 2013, all the label's recordings, produced by founder Dan Carey, are finished in a single day, with mix down completed by the following night. The result is vital, off-the-cuff guitar music the likes of which is hard to find anywhere else. As this fourth anniversary compilation proves. Opening on scottibrains' aptly-titled "Sustained Threat", a rocket-propelled slice of post punk, it's hard to imagine things getting much better. Subjectivity dictates whether they do or not, but objectively speaking they don't get any worse. black midi's "bmbmbm", a twisted, growing stomper that has more than one foot in Krautrock, Treeboy & Arc's garage rock and synth powerhouse "Concept", and "Heart Attack"'s complex, groove-driven good times vibe, courtesy of All We Are & Alex Kapranos, are just a few examples.

Review: And the award for most apt compilation title of the year goes to... While on face value it may seem like the USA's Pacific North West and UK's English North West have very little in common, this collection of tracks confirm there are similarities. And they go further than the damp conditions both regions often have to endure. Cheshire-born Burgess and West Coast native Stanley have been friends for 30 years, and their respective homelands collide here. Tim Peaks Diner, established by the former as a festival pop up, apparently owes much of its stylings to "Twin Peaks", and that series-cum-movie-cum-legend has inspired much of the soundtrack to said eatery. New Wave (The Chills), opiate folk (Gwenno), psychedelic country (Blue Orchids) and plenty more help capture the mood of a fantastical waypoint on some fictional road trip.

Review: NME's mail-order 'C86' compilation, released way back in 1986, has become something of a cherished time capsule: an acclaimed, on-point collection that summed up indie and alternative rock in the mid 1980s. This three-disc compilation is touted by Cherry Red as a "prequel" to that legendary comp. It naturally features some of the same artists - usually in the form of earlier tracks or obscurities - as well as the rest of the cream of the crop of indie in 1985. There are pre-fame recordings from James, the Stone Roses and Primal Scream, jangly guitars aplenty, and killer cuts from bands that briefly flickered brightly but time has generally forgotten.

Review: Waves of Distortion (The Best of Shoegaze 1990-2022) is a superbly curated trip through the genre from the good folks at Two Piers, who have served up similarly excellent collections focussed on everything from French psychedelic pop to garage psych. This serves as both a fine intro and a great retrospective for existing fans that will take you down a rabbit hole and leave you wanting more. Some of the scene's original pioneers feature and there are many timeless tunes here that help to document the subtle evolution of the genre throughout the decades.

Review: Having previously celebrated dance and pop hits of the 1980s, the long-running Now That's What I Call Music series - itself established that decade - has turned its attention to "alternative". It's a catch-all term that basically includes anything with indie roots, meaning a mix of goth, post-punk, indie, new wave, indie-dance and skewed synth-pop that emerged from the underground rather than the A&R departments of major labels. There's plenty of big hits and iconic cuts stretched across the four discs (think The Smiths, Simple Minds, Joy Division, REM, The Jam, New Order, Pixies, Sisters of Mercy etc), alongside lesser-celebrated favourites from the likes of Pop Will Eat Itself, Tom Robinson (the decidedly Balearic 'Atmospherics', which was co-written by Peter Gabriel), Sugacubes, Kissing The Pink and Big Audio Dynamite.

Review: You could probably write a dissertation, if not full thesis, on the symbolism of this album. The biggest name in British chart pop compilations, NOW, turns its hand to spotlighting less obvious tracks from the decade that gave birth to the entire franchise. What this reflects, in terms of what constitutes 'popular' music today, and the questionable relevance of the UK Top 40, is a fascinating train of thought.
Musically speaking, the curators have done a decent job in selecting a broad range of artists, bands and sounds from the fertile grounds of the 1980s. Plenty here are household names - The Stranglers, Devo, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Smiths, Eurythmics, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. Nevertheless, you won't find 'Sweet Dreams' on the track list, and instead rarer archive material is allowed to shine: 'Vicious Games' rather than 'Oh Yeah' by Yello, The Cure's stunning 'A Forest' - we could go on.

Review: For a city that famously has been losing inhabitants since the decline of the US motor industry began, leaving behind both economic scars and neighbourhood-sized population block holes, Detroit's impact on western music culture has been ridiculously consistent, with the Michigan metropolis ranking among America's healthiest and most significant sonic hubs. From Motown to techno adn Eminem, sounds born here have echoed around the world, and in many cases made a bid for global domination.
Less talked about is the space rock, shoegaze and dream pop scene the town has long been home to, which was in a particularly good place during the 1990s. The second Southeast of Saturn compilation returns to that community and that time, presenting a number of lesser known talents from the area. Highlights including Grimble Grumble, Sabine, Shapeshifter, Star Phase, and The Sunflower Conspiracy.

Review: Cabaret Sauvage is one of the most unique venues in the world. Situated in Park de la Villette in north-central Paris, the circus-styled institution hosts live gigs and club events featuring celebrated artists from across the globe, and has been doing this since first opening in 1997. One evening, the Tricatel crew decided to take over the space for a showcase of live bands, hence us now being able to get hands on this soon-to-be collector's item. Paying tribute to what was an incredible night of incredibly varied music, the tracks list here represents all the artists who played at the date, and runs through a vast gamut of styles. The male-chorus and psyche pop rock of Leo Blomov, Chassol's neo-classical-opera-experimentations, the lo fi country-folk-swing of Ingrid Caven, and the bouncing synthdom of Bertrand Burgalat being a few highlights.

Review: Cleopatra gather together a whole host of freaks and ghouls to pay tribute to the psychobilly brilliance of the timeless rock 'n' roll deviants, The Cramps. The bands have been picked wisely, favouring people who will put their own spin on classics like 'Human Fly' and 'I Was A Teenage Werewolf'. Bat bring a chrome finish to 'Goo Goo Muck' and Blitzkid make 'Garbageman' into a sharply pointed strutter and The Brains pound out a driving version of 'I Can't Hardly Stand It'. Poison Ivy and Lux Interior's influence continues to ring out across the rock spectrum, which this collection proves with ease.

Review: Guy Richie's Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels may well be a film very much from a certain era but a fantastic one it remains. It is now a quarter of a century old and part of the reason it struck such a chord upon release was the super cool and occasionally bad-ass soundtrack. It now gets a special anniversary reissue on four sides of translucent red wax with all the original standouts present and correct - from the smooth jungle of E Z Rollers to the macing James Brown cut 'The Boss' via Junior Murvin's smokers' anthem 'Police & Thieves', reliving this one is always well worth it.

Review: A cinematic classic requiring little introduction, Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels has gone on to become one of the quintessential British gangster flicks. Complete with endlessly quotable dialogue and a myriad of scuzzy yet endearing characters, the project would lay the groundwork for the mega success of Snatch which would follow at the turn of the new millennium. Almost as iconic as the film or its exceptional casting, is the cracking soundtrack which varies from James Brown to Junior Murvin to even Dusty Springfield. Yes, Robbie Williams might make an appearance (as he was everywhere in the late 90s), but with The Stooges and The Stone Roses in tow, the soundtrack runs the gamut from britpop to reggae to classic even d&b cuts such as 'Walk This Land' from E-Z Rollers. Freshly available on wax, this collection has since morphed into an intriguing time capsule of the British musical landscape in the ensuing decades, while also serving as a vast, varied compilation of timeless bangers.

Review: Waves of Distortion (The Best of Shoegaze 1990-2022) is a superbly curated trip through the genre from the good folks at Two_piers, who have served up similarly excellent collections focussed on everything from French psychedelic pop to garage psych. This serves as both a fine intro and a great retrospective for existing fans that will take you down a rabbit hole and leave you wanting more. Some of the scene's original pioneers feature and there are many a timeless tune here that help to document the subtle evolution of the genre throughout the decades.

Review: Available as a limited edition purple LP, 'Nineties Collected' forms the second instalment in the 'Decades Collected' series from Music On Vinyl, which hears each decade from the past century or so 'collected' in terms of its most popular tracks. With songs from Underworld, U2, Air, Kula Shaker and Kelis on there, you can be sure that this album'll scour every corner of the nineties dance-pop world, offering a rare glimpse into a time wherein labels had far more cash, and underground artists had far more clout. Four waxen sides of unbridled Euro-optimism and relentless positivity characterise this take on the '90s.
