Review: Debutants 4D & Krunky create ravey and funked-up minimal techno, taking its cues from early Detroit techno and northern bleep styles. The grooves to be heard on the Humanoid label's are as cute as the label art: from the strobed-out shuffle 'n' roll of 'Oplescot', to the west coast breaks of 'Stunt Bubble' calling to mind the mid '90s sounds of Northern California, and the hyper aware boompty boomp of closer 'Seasaw'.

  3. Matador Beach (vocal mix) (2:47)
Review: Word on the street is that Alister is the next big thing to come out of the Motor City. The song writer and producer must be hotly tipped, frankly, because the one and only Omar S has taken him under his wing and recorded and mixed these two new tunes, which are tasters from his full length album to come in the spring. They bare all his hallmarks too - crunchy, dusty drums, rugged chord vamps and prickly perc. 'Starlight' is all that with an added vocal, while 'Matador Beach' is more trippy and nocturnal, with a delicate falsetto lost in pinball melodies and ricocheting hits.

Cat: SS 048. Rel: 01 Mar 21
  1. Andrew Ashong & Theo Parrish - "Flowers"
  2. Andrew Ashong - "Take It Slow"
  3. Andrew Ashong - "The Way She Moves" (short version)
Review: At first glance, the pairing of Forest Hill resident Andrew Ashong and Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish would seem strange. But the duo have worked together previously with the Ghanaian born vocalist (and supposed owner of a vinyl collection that would make most record shops look like a car boot sale) lending his soulful tones to Parrish's excellent nine minute plus translation of the Hot Chip and Spiritualised affiliated About Group. Whereas that collaboration was more about Ashong's voice being just one element of a production that was undoubtedly Parrish, the three tracks present on the Flowers EP look to showcase what a talent the Londoner is. Those trademark dust filled stacatto rhythms are present in the opening title track, but they never swamp Ashong's killer vocal delivery, while "Take It Slow" is bonafide D funk of the highest order. After the brutal, divisive nature of Theo's kung fu experimentalism on the Any Other Styles EP, these three tracks show him in a wholly new light and hopefully Parrish and Ashong will be making much more music together.

Review: Seriously authentic vibe son this one from Billy Lo, which is a trio of artists from Detroit's Motor City. Bill Beaver is a Sound Signature and Mahogany Music alumnus, Darren Abrams wrote the classic 'Loose Piano' on Third Ear Recordings and Darryl Tis is the third piece of the puzzle. This EP features a repress of 'Its The Life,' a forgotten classic from the D that first came in 2002 and now costs a small fortune on Discogs. As well as the original, NDATL's front man Kai Alce remixes and two additional jazzy tinged, deep house gems are also included on this gold standard EP.

  1. Trimming (7:37)
  2. Getter Go (6:59)
Review: Prolific Northern Irish producer Calibre is no stranger to The Nothing Special label overseen by Fabric resident Craig Richards, having debuted on the imprint under his given name Dominick Martin with the Knee Soul 12" last year. Fresh from issuing Shelflife 3, the tenth Calibre album of a decorated production career, Martin now graces The Nothing Special with some Calibre material in the shape of the Trimming 12". Mastered by Keith Tenniswood, Calibre shows off his contemplative side with the dub influenced title track whilst the supple basslines and intricate rhythms of "Getter Go" nudges proceedings towards the dancefloor.

Cat: BB 45009. Rel: 16 Feb 21
  1. Ricky 2 (Multi-track edit) (6:19)
  2. Ricky 2 (Intoxicated mix) (6:15)
Review: Joseph Caserta's latest sneaky seven-inch is a sequel of sorts to his 2015 single 'Ricky', a deliciously hazy and groovy deep house jam that showcased breathy spoken word snippets from disco-soul lothario Rick James. This time round, the Boston-based producer and KON collaborator has decided to rework James' classic 'Give It To Me Baby' in honour of the track's 40th birthday. He presents a fabulous multi-track edit on side A, rightfully showcasing James' brilliant vocals, Latin-inspired horn lines and colourful synth sounds. He totally re-invents the track on the flip, placing snippets of James' vocals at the heart of a dark, dense, organ-rich early morning house workout.

  1. Testament One (Mr Jay & Paul Bleasdale mix) (6:46)
  2. Testament One (Loveface Demix) (6:27)
  3. Testament One (remastered) (5:37)
Review: Cleveland City is the place to go for some of those old school house flavours and Chubby Chunks's Testament One: The Remixes is another fine offering from the 90s. The originals got plenty of plays back in the 90s with their acid, pianos and fluid grooves all finding a perfect sweet spot between warmth and depth but also party time. Cream resident Paul Bleasdale teams up with Mr Jay on the first mix, a joyous one that never lets up, then Loveface ups the disco dazzle and finally the original brings that steamy house heat.

  3. Jared Wilson - "Leave Your World Behind" (GOM mix) (6:27)
  4. Gilbert - "Signs Of Hope" (6:15)
Review: We're Going Deep do it again on a nicely varied four tracker featuring talents old and new. Cignol's 'Late Night Traverse' is a brilliantly designed cut with a loopy lead melody phrase that is going nowhere in a hurry over a nice meandering bassline. Armec's 'Celestial Mechanics' is a tougher electro tinged beat with industrial textural references and then Jared Wilson does what he does best. Acidddddd. Gilbert rounds out with a thoughtful and pensive cut that will have you gazing off into the multi-verse as his ticking hits and elastic bass keep things moving.

Dragons In Paradise
Dragons In Paradise (1-sided translucent blue marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: LF 074. Rel: 23 Feb 21
  1. Dragons In Paradise (7:38)
Review: 2020 was a banner year for Bedrock subdivision Lost & Found, with label chief Guy Judah's expert curation having brought us stellar releases by the likes of Volen Sentir, Sahar Z, Brian Cid and Stereo Underground. It sure looks like 2021 will keep on with the quality of output, if this new one by the boss man himself is anything to buy. Guy J is back under the Cornucopia alias on this one titled 'Dragons in Paradise', which once again displays the accomplished Israeli producer's penchant for deep and mesmerising sounds. Fuelled by exotic instrumentation, subtle rhythms and ethereal chord progressions, it is perfect for those glassy-eyed and bittersweet moments on the dancefloor.

Review: Romania never disappoints when it comes to tech house form the outer edges of the galaxy and now Cosmic JD and Zenta keep up that tradition. It's Cosmic JD who steps up first with the silky drum automations and warped pads of his heady workout 'E Tea.' On 'Plant Algebra' his betas get more minimal, the pads more liquid and the whole vibe more delicate and cinematic. He then links with Zenta firstly for 'Catbird Lane', a wonky and trippy late night groover and finally the bump and grind tech of 'Red Star, Winter Orbit.'

  3. Alternation (6:56)
Review: This is definitely one of this week's most exciting new releases: a repress of a highly sought after classic by legend Richard Davis. The Berlin-based British singer/producer has been recording for over two decades and is known for his collaborations with everyone from Swayzak to Trentemoller and Noir. He released a bunch of awesome 12's between the turn of the millennium and 2010 on now defunct label Decore, one of them being 'Temptation'. A fine example of a timeless deep house groove, this one is perfect mood music for late night dancefloor contemplation. Over on the flip, you've got the woozy Sunday afterhours bliss of Let's Take It Over (with its addictive vocal refrain, perfect those saucer-eyed moments in the comfort zone.

  2. Gilbert - "Furthest Planet" (7:26)
  3. Jonski - "Venusian Surface" (6:23)
  4. DJ Guy - "Aphelion Orbit" (5:56)
Review: The fourth multi-artist EP from blog-turned-record label Innate takes the imprint's inherently warm and far-sighted sound into new intergalactic directions. Offering a quartet of cuts from established producers and rising stars, all inspired by dreams of cross-cosmic travel and the alluring weightlessness of deep space. 004 explores the love of stargazing electronics in much greater deapth.

The A-side is all about melodious and spacey electro with Dutch legend Aroy Dee making a rare appearance away from his acclaimed M>O>S Recordings label. "Leegte" A1 is impressively immersive, cloaking a jaunty bassline and lo-fi beats in sumptuous aural textures and glassy-eyed chords. Accompanied by Innate label regular Gilbert, "Furthest Planet" A2 is a deep roller whose lilting lead lines, shimmering electronics and tumbling acid lines are little less than life-affirming.

On side B, the sound subtly shifts towards the multi-coloured, sci-fi shimmer of techno. Newcomer Jonski, (aka Bristol electro producer Zobol) drops "Venusian Surface" B1 - a classic interstellar jam full of vivid chords, echoing synth squiggles and alluring leads that rise above a classic tech-funk bassline. Last but not least, effervescent Welshman DJ Guy (Unthank/Other World Music) slams down an energetic techno stomper in "Aphelion Orbit": boasting brilliantly breathless drum programming, illuminated by the celestial shimmer of accompanying chords. A perfect conclusion to Innate's most action-packed release to date.

  2. Heritage - "Dial Up" (4:27)
Review: Plastik People bring some more garage heat to their Ltd sublabel with the outstanding double hit of DJ Deller and Heritage. Deller is in control on the A side with the rolling breakstep funk of 'Nobody Does It Better', maximising on a soulful male vocal, killer hats and a Lately bassline to die for. On the flip, Heritage is a rougher affair that breaks the beat up and goes in hard on the wobbly subs, keeping things sparse and deadly for a surefire club weapon. It's a perfect foil to the upfront soul vibes of the A side, making this an incredibly useful record to pack for two vastly different reasons.

Review: One for the minimal techno fans this week: new Tunisian imprint Danzha inaugurates things with this terrific various artists sampler titled Maieutics I, featuring scene newcomers and veterans alike. Of the former variety, the mysterious Dunkler Boulevard serves up some seriously paranoid mini-funk on '13' while Do Easy Records head Paul Walter from Vienna is as equally afterhours minded on the microhouse shuffle of 'Roots, Rock'. On the flip, we have longstanding scene hero Topper wandering into ominous and atmospheric territory on 'Riders Of The Lost Arp' - the kind of track you could imagine him playing during one of his acclaimed morning sets aboard Berlin's Hoppetosse.

Review: French label Sounds Benefit pool resources once more with four different artists for this innovative new tech house wax. Pager Records co-creator Phil Evans opens up with a wear but fist clenching tech grinder with wigged out effects and crisp, snappy drums. Marco Bley aka Def Engine then serves up an edit of 'Escape Moot' thats driving and warm with a playful little chord vamp sure to get hands in the air. On the flip there's more colourful and emotive house from Bowyer and a deep, bumping bit of cosmic tech funk in the form of 'Riding Zone.'

Review: Eversines has enjoyed an interesting career to date, switching between intriguing electronica experiments (see his blissful collaboration with Carolina Eyck, the sumptuous Waves), and more rugged, intoxicating dancefloor workouts (a fine 12" on Kalahari Oyster Cult). This time round, the Amsterdam-based producer is in club-focused mode. He begins bu surrounding a rubbery breakbeat with broken modem electronics, twisted acid lines and deep bass on 'Loopo', before reaching for spacey pads and bubbly lead lines on sci-fi brekas special 'Plyfe'. B-side opener 'Raarup Jam' is hypnotic, odd and otherworldly in the best possible way, while 'Vlob Tool' is a bongo-laced trip into percussion-rich deep techno.

Review: The Mysidian label out of Costa Mesa, California drops Belarusian producer Fitzzgerald's first full release of original tunes. The 1993 EP features three deep numbers and much like its namesake it features old school flavour all the way. From the neon-lit bounce of the title track, merging the best of acid house and Balearic on the sunset bliss of 'Moon Jam' and getting on some big fun with the timeless first wave Detroit vibes of 'Want To Feel'. Also on the flip, Japan's Roy Comanchero, who appeared previously on the label with the Beach & Parsol EP a while back, returns for a hot remix of 'Moon Jam' awash in celestial FM synth tones.
