  1. You Gotta (7:11)
  2. Bliss (7:32)
  3. Techfest (8:26)
  4. Suits You (6:29)
Review: For the first release on their freshly minted Euphoric State sub-label, London label OPIA has turned to '90s survivors A2 & Stopouts, a trio of producers who first made their name as British tech-house pioneers in the late 1990s. The four tracks showcased on "Go With The Flo" apparently date from this period, though this is the first time they've seen the light of day. There's much to admire throughout, from the rolling, funk-fuelled house grooves and intergalactic pads of opener "You Gotta", to the jacking tech-funk of closing cut "Suits You", via the glassy-eyed rush of "Techfest", where sci-fi motifs and dream house electronics rise above bumping beats and a deliciously squelchy bassline.

Cat: KIMOCHI 40. Rel: 23 Mar 20
  1. Dare To Be Different (Natan H Graveyard Shift rework) (6:18)
  2. The Face Yours Reminds Me Of (Leif Rearview Mirror dub) (6:18)
  3. Effortlessness (Benjamin Brunn Gold Plated Diamonds version) (5:19)
  4. Effortlessness (Benjamin Brunn Chrome Plated Diamonds version) (7:55)
Review: Since it was Area that started the Kimochi Sound revolution just under a decade ago, it seems fitting that the publicity-shy artist has delivered the label's first release of a new decade. There are no new Area tracks here though, but rather a quartet of fresh reworks of classic cuts. Natan H kicks off proceedings with a deep, hypnotic, trippy and undeniably wonky revision of "Dare To Be Different", before Leif weighs in with a deliciously melodious, soft-focus revision of picturesque track "The Face Yours Reminds Me Of". Benjamin Brunn takes over on Side B and delivers two contrasting versions on "Effortlessness": the deep, wayward electro-meets-dub house drowsiness of the "Gold Plated Diamonds" mix and the heady ambient techno brilliance of the "Chrome Plated Diamonds" mix.

Land Of Oz (hand-stamped transparent yellow vinyl 12" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: SUBWAX EXCYELLOW. Rel: 24 Mar 20
  1. Derek Carr - "Land Of Oz" (7:20)
  2. Spin Fidelity - "Orion" (5:51)
Review: 2 veterans of UK techno are present on the latest outing on Barcelona imprint Subwax's sub label Subwax Excursions. It's all about the journey within electronic music on this offering with no fixed genre or style. On the A side we have Westmeath's finest stalwart Derek Carr who presents his idiosyncratic style of high fidelity techno soul on the funky "Land Of Oz". On the flip, Cheshire's Antonio Velazquez aka Spin Fidelity provides a good dose of Motor City influenced electro-funk on the futuristic vibe of "Orion". Hand stamped transparent yellow vinyl 12", limited to 200 copies.

  1. Katmandu (6:11)

  3. Katmandu (Jazzanova remix) (5:31)
  4. Katmandu (Eddy Ramich feat Jan Kincl & Regis Kattie remix) (7:31)
Review: The worldly wide Far Our label turns its attention to some fascinating house sounds from Ivan Mamao Conti. "Katmandu" is all bendy bass and tropical drums, steamy humidity and sensuous synths. Pablo Valentino flips it into warm and jazzy number for cosy basement clubs that harks back to the 90s, and Jazzanova then layer in plenty of the golden instrumentals and key playing that makes the music come alive. The closing remix is all Moodymann vibes with its rough kicks and claps, funk bass and lived-in aesthetic. This is classy house music from front to back.

Gabriel (reissue) (limited white vinyl 12")
Cat: LARV 019WHITE. Rel: 24 Mar 20
  1. Gabriel (The Scroll mix) (6:59)
  2. Gabriel (Tamborine dub) (7:13)
  3. Gabriel (live Garage) (7:25)
  4. Gabriel (Words To Give By) (7:22)
Review: Is there a more positive, soulful and life-affirming dancefloor anthem out there than Roy Davis Jr and Peven Everett's 1996 jam "Gabriel"? As many will be aware, it has long been sought of as a classic, with soulful house, deep house, US and UK garage DJs all championing it back in the day. This white vinyl reissue boasts all of the mixes featured on the original 12". Perhaps the most famous version is the rolling, bass-heavy two-step flex of the "Live Garage" mix that opens side B, but there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere. The driving, jazzy-but-stomping "Words To Give By" version has been annoyingly overlooked over the years, while the "Tambourine Dub" is deliciously sweaty and driving in the best possible way.

  3. Kobe JT - "Free" (Soulecta remix) (5:05)
  4. Dr Shemp - "Pick Myself Up" (Spreadlove '96 mix) (6:47)
Review: The new wave of UK garage continues to yield spectacular results - just cop this sizzling second slab from Rhythm People, which gathers together four producers keeping the flame burning for that sweet late 90s sound. Dirty Secretz have soul by the bucketload, from the sweet organ stabs to the diva vocal woven into "Once Again". Revived Pleasure makes a debut appearance with the cool, shuffling vibe of "D'u Believe", while Soulecta brings a hopped up slice n' dice of 2-step brilliance to Kobe JT's "Free". Dr Shemp's "Pick Myself Up" reaches fever pitch on the "Spreadlove '96 Mix" - a fired up peak time 4x4 belter to lose it to.

  4. Leaving Home (7:36)
Review: Following releases by Cuartero, Christian Burkhardt and label chief East End Dubs, it's over to Berlin's favourite son and head of Unison Wax: Diego Krause. As you'd expect, "ENDZ 034" features some surefire main room tackle that rolls tough: from the lean boompty funk of "Fierce", the moody afterhours tech house of "Mere Mortals" - the latter similar to his recent release on Mulen Records to the tripped-out vibes on the utterly hypnotizing "Essence" and the ethereal, sunny afternoon bliss of "Leaving Home" which hammers home the message in a Sunday-at-Club Der Visionaere fashion.

  4. Bliz (6:46)
  5. Inverno (6:59)
Review: Italian minimal house expert Spacetravel is back with the third release on his newly inaugurated Travelling Without Moving imprint. It's a largely brooding affair on the A side of 'Labirinto 2020': from the reductionist afterhours of hypnotiser "Test 00" which treads a similar path to the likes of Losoul, to the breakbeat-driven industrial epic "Control" which is quite unlike anything we've heard from the Berlin-based artist before. On the flip he's managed to cram in three tracks, which you'll be pleased to know are a touch more uplifting - not that we found the A side altogether unpleasant. From the addictively groovy 4/4 electro funk of "Cosmic Charter" to the neon-lit Sunday morning deepness of "Inverno", there's a wide variety of moods and grooves for any occasion on this fine EP.

Mountains (12")
Cat: DFTD 592. Rel: 24 Mar 20
  1. Mountains (extended mix) (5:26)
  2. Mountains (Danny Krivit remix) (10:25)
Review: Last time out Andreya Triana and The Vision (AKA KON and Ben Westbeech) took us to "Heaven" and back. For their latest single they've asked us to gape in wonder at some suitably sizeable "Mountains". In its original "Extended Mix" form (side A) the track is soulful, slick and seductive, with Triana's superb vocals rising, mountain-like, above a musical panorama rich in dreamy chords, jazz-funk bass, gospel pianos and club-ready beats that sit somewhere between deep house and disco. Danny Krivit is the man at the controls for the flipside remix. He stretches out the track impressively, making a bit more of the spacey synths, guitars and bass while re-framing the track as a soaring slab of piano house brilliance.

LV 1X (12")

  1. Harry Wills - "Sloshed" (7:56)
  2. Tim Schlockermann - "Locked" (6:47)
  3. Mbius - "Helge Nuch" (6:42)
Review: Sevensol, Map.ache and Bender's new Leipzig-based venture Long Vehicle presents its inaugural release here entitled "LV 1X". Featured are Harry Wills (Osman/Entity London) who serves up some groovy analogue minimal funk on his contribution "Sloshed", while A2 comes from local up and comer Tim Schlockermann (aka U.S. Coin Map) who gives us the utterly infectious "Locked" which you won't be able to get out of your head. On the flip, Mbius of Ethernal fame serves up more of his distinct blend of mesmerising deep house on standout track "Helge Nuch". Good first impressions of the label - tip!

  10. LFHT12 (The Wizard Of Meudon) (7:19)
Review: As the title suggests, this must-check compilation from TB-303 abuser Chris Moss Acid gathers together the cream of the crop from the Bournemouth-based artist's long running, digital-only "Lo-Fi House" series of EPs. There's plenty to set the pulse racing across the ten-track, triple-vinyl set, from the sweaty ghetto-acid bump of "LFHT14 (Pump It)" and off-key acid psychedelia of "LFHT19 (Out of Your Mind)", to the stomping techno menace of "LFHT18 (Violet-le-Duc-Acid II)", Phuture-esque "LFHT7 (Acid 22)" and the suitably epic, album-closing celebration of wayward electronics, aggressive bass and jacking drums that is "LFHT12 (The Wizard of Meudon)".

Review: Austrian Demuja lands on his own label with a strong eight track statement of his house intent. It finds the artist broadening his horizons and delving into some proper song writing in the case of opener "The Saunter" which is a big piano cut with great vocals. There's hi-tek Detroit soul on "Power To The People" and warm, deep grooves on the "Big Bass Version" of "Take It & Leave". For more broken beat and lounge flecked vibes, "Come Back & Dance" is excellent and the variation in mood and groove throughout makes this as good for listening as it does for dancing.

Review: Finding and buying original vinyl copies of Moodymann's brilliant second album, 1998's "Mahogany Brown", can be a costly business, so all praise to Peacefrog for offering up this much-needed reissue. Packed to the rafters with classic Kenny Dixon Junior material - see the woozy warmth of "Sunshine", where a children's choir rides a locked-in groove and jazzy electric piano solos, the sample-laden up-tempo bump of "MEANDNJB" and the sublime gospel house workout "Black Sunday" for starters - it's arguably the album that established the Detroit legend's trademark sound once and for all. When it comes to jazz-flecked deep house shot through with references to the history of black American music, there are few - if any - better albums.
