Review: Two years have passed since Melbourne collective 30/70 released "Elevation", a superb mini album on Rhythm Section International that showcased their unique and hard-to-pigeonhole fusions of neo-soul, hip-hop, jazz, spoken word and broken beat. Here they return to Bradley Zero's much-admired imprint with arguably their most expansive release to date. It's another wonderfully creative, loose-limbed and hard to pin-down affair, with highlights including the wild contemporary jazz-meets-bruk brilliance of "Reprise", the slick jazz-funk/hip-hop fusion of "Echoplex", the fizzing live drum and bass dreaminess of "Crystal Hills" and the heady soul righteousness of "NYP".

Review: The King of Upstate, 38 Spesh, and Far Rockaway's Flee Lord are both super hyped in the hip hop world right now. The timing of their debut album, then, is just right to capitalise on that as well as prove any naysayers wrong. And it does that across nine hot cuts of golden era hip hop, with evocative skits and slick MPC action all overlaid by some edgy vocal deliveries. With the help of notable guests such as RJ Payne & Grafh, Che Noir and Termanology amongst others, 38 Spesh and Flee Lord are on top of their game.

Review: Danny Brown has long been an underground hip hop superstar. Now up to his fifth studio album he has pretty much achieved it all so decides to drill down and make a supremely focussed record that says a lot in just 11 tracks. His flow is reined in and superbly controlled throughout, it's hip hop laced with a sense of psychedelia but also strongly informed by classic, golden era boom-bap - no doubt thanks to the legendary producer behind it all, namely Mr Q-Tip. Featuring raw energy, spiritual thoughtfulness, guest spots from Run The Jewels and Blood Orange, this is an accomplished record from an accomplished artist.

Review: After big outings with MF Doom and Ghostface Killah, Czarface are back with a new album that brings their brilliantly unhinged hip hop sounds to an album full of curveballs. In house beat team 7L & Jeremy Page do a fine job of serving up everything from haunting Italo to pop leaning ditty via dig-dub, classic hip hop and late night groovers. The action packed lyrical delivery has you locked in for the duration and tackles an ambitious range of subjects with equal skill. High octane battles and story telling skills; this might just be this heroic outfit's finest work to date.

Review: Sample maestro, turntable wizard and genre-blender extraordinaire DJ Shadow unveils his latest album after teasing with hit single "Rocket Fuel" featuring vocals from legendary trio De La Soul earlier in the year. The full length finds the US beat maker in an angry mood, with plenty of anxiety riddled cuts, frazzled synths and raw textures conveying a certain unease with the world around him. There are still moments of his trademark string laced beauty on "Firestorm" and gorgeous instrumentals like "Rosie," but this is definitely the sound of an artist who still has plenty of new things to say.

Review: A new album from Gang Starr is no joke, 16 years on from the last after Guru's passing in 2010. With DJ Premier on the beats, you need not question the quality spilling out of the speakers throughout this powerful return from one of hip-hop's holy grails. The spots showing some of the late Guru's skills act as a bittersweet reminder of his lyrical gift and that voice, but the space he left behind is amply filled out by a hit list of guest spots on the mic. MOP, Q-Tip, Jeru The Damaja, Talib Kweli - as if any of these legends would pass up the chance to lend their bars to this late entry from hip-hop royalty.

Review: Often cited as the sort of album that took hip hop in credible new directions and opened it up to a broader audience who had previously been put off by rap and all its streetwise slang and urban references, Hieroglyphics' "3rd Eye Vision" landed in 1998. It has been cited as one of the best indie hop hip albums of all time thanks to its lavish instrumentation and stellar production from Domino, with contributions from A-Plus, Opio, Del and Casual. Each of the 20 tracks tell their own stories but mesh them together and it's a coherent album overall that proves going your own way, away from the majors can be a scary but rewarding move.

Review: Jungle Brown's much anticipated second album is finally here, and packed with collaborations with exciting peers like Sampa The Great, Fliptrix and Terri Walker. The trio of Ric Flo, MAEAR & Tony Bones are in fine form with their ever soulful hip hop taking subtle hints from grime, house and trap. "Keep It Movin" and Huami" are for golden era fans, while "Sometimes" flips the script with a tight, bumping house beat and buttery raps. "Custom Made" is a rhythmically inventive, richly layered track and is one of many highlights on a standout album.

Review: Much like the first instalment in this deep digging series on Kognitif, the label boss of the same name serves up a real masterclass in soul, electro, hip hop and beats. The self-taught musician and trip hop and hip hop producer is a big name in France and will likely only win more fans worldwide with the Soul Food series. Volume 2 features big horn jams such as "Don't Make Me Wait", sample heavy jams like "Same Old Thing" and breezy, upbeat groovers as heard on "Go With The Flow" all interspersed with more worldly and jazz tinged offerings.

Review: American Steve Lacy's solo debut showcases his vocal as well as guitar playing skills while drawing on the rich history of hip hop at the same time. His lo-fi approach to production and vulnerable and introspective style of singing makes this solo debut album "Apollo XXI" feel like a very personal work all while offering golden moments of bedroom pop, indie leaning lullabies and wordplay beyond the artist's 21 years. After contributing to tracks by Solange, Kendrick, Mac Miller, Blood Orange and Vampire Weekend as well as being part of The Internet, this might be the breakout record Lacy deserves. Either way, it is a richly rewarding listen from a hugely talented young artist.

Review: In Florida, 'bussin' means tasty, and so is a perfect name for Devin Morrison's solo debut album on NBN Records. A perfect melange of smooth funk, golden era r&b and gospel overtones, it's a feel good record that balances nostalgia with modernism in all the right ways. Guests like Grammy Award nominees KING, L.A. singer Joyce Wrice and seasoned originals like Ace Hashimoto (aka Brandun DeShay) all feature amongst G-funk basslines, melting vocal harmonies, timeless duets and futuristic gems. This record proves that good r&b will never go away.

  14. Hold Mines
  15. Get Dirty (feat The Ghetto Dwellas)
Review: Jumping on Black Friday as an excuse to put out this classic hip hop record from duo Show and A.G. is fine by us, especially when it also features O.C., KRS-One and Big Pun, as well as verses from Diggin' In The Crates (D.I.T.C.) crew mates such as Diamond D, Big L and Lord Finesse. Musically the sound ranges from classic era hip hop to darker, more hard-hitting gangster styles. It adds up to something impactful and adventurous that builds on the pair's already successful blueprint and solidifies their place in history. This project has never been realised in its full and complete glory on vinyl before now, so don't sleep.

Review: Brittney Denise Parks aka Sudan Archives has released some of the most fascinating music of the last couple of years. What makes it so unique is Parks' voice, which tumbles down to melancholic depths or soars to uplifting highs. On this new album, though, she makes more of her own virtuoso violin playing, stretching the sounds in all manner of wonderful directions, couching her voice in lush sonic layers. There is an orchestral, chamber music feel to this most grandiose of works, and it is one that feels rich, poignant and moving from start to finish. Smart, inventive, but soulful, it might be one of the albums of the year.
