  7. The Middle (Kaidi Tatham remix) (5:08)
Review: For their second release, new French label Cosmocities welcome Active Ingredients aka golden era MC Stan Smith and Inkswel, the futuristic pair who blurs lines between hip hop, beats and house music. "The Middle" finds them come together in a real sweet spot, where smooth flows and lush beats sooth the soul and lyrical depth proved plenty of brain food. Broken beat maestro Kaidi Tatham also appears with a superb remix of the title track to close out a record that very much sums up the vibrant intersection between jazz, beats and hip hop that has been blowing up in 2019.

  1. Can't Keep Working This Hard (3:34)
  2. Run It Back (feat Andy Cooper) (3:07)
Review: Brand new funk from Bristol-based duo The Allergies, these two pant-swinging numbers mark the build up to their third album Steal The Show. As always, it's an all-out funkathon with full eyes on the party prize. "Can't Keep Working This Hard" jumps with a classic JB style break with some gutsy, raw soul vocal chops while "Run It Back" sees them tagging up with Andy Cooper once again with another classic spitfire rap jam that you know you'll be air rapping to within two or three listens. Yeah you will.

  1. Dance Now (3:43)
  2. Fade Away (feat Andy Cooper From Ugly Duckling) (2:59)
Review: Aside from releasing 2 albums for the imprint, Bristol's The Allergies have been a pillar of the Jalapeno label's success over the years, helping the label find its feet amid the ever-growing broken beat scene. The duo return to the catalogue with a classic helping of their very own breakbeat science, first up with the vocal-led charm of "Dance Now", a commercially-minded dancehall anthem that strays into pop and r&b with utter ease. On the flip, Andy Cooper features on the rap-pop hybrid vocals of "Fade Away", a feel-good party tune that is solely focused on getting you to move!

  1. Main Event (3:37)
  2. Buzzsaw (3:57)
Review: What a trip it's been for The Allergies; rolling from one killer album to the next, funk is flying from their HQ at a rate of knots. Here are two fine examples from their last LP Push On, both featuring their long-time friend and MC from Andy Cooper. Best known for his witty wordplay and character on Ugly Duckling records, here Andy gets to show off both sides to his expansive flow; "Main Event" is a chubby disco groove laced with mountains of funk, creating space for Andy's laidback-but-hypey charm. In perfect contrast "Buzzsaw" is a much sweatier funk jam allowing Cooper to get rapid and tongue-twisty in a way that only he knows how. Keep on pushing...

Review: Northentic Records welcome back cult UK rapper Blade for a link up with producer Seek The Northerner that delivers messages of gratitude in arresting fashion . The signature boom bap production of Seek underpins the whole a-side, while he also adds his own verse which pays tribute to his collaborative partner here. World Champion turntablist DJ Woody layers in plenty of scratches to add some old school cool and engineering from No Sleep Nigel ensures it all sounds super fresh. It you want it even more direct and raw, the flip side instrumental has you covered.

Review: Bouncing his time between Antibalas and his Marcos Garcia and Chico Mann projects, Chico returns after several years of silence with a sweet slice of lolloping broken soul. With its soft padded synths and cotton wool hug of Kendra Morris's vocals, there's a delicate tumble to proceedings as we nod and slide into a sound that's remained in its own soul universe since emerging almost 20 years ago. When done as well and with as much authenticity as this, it's timeless.

Review: "Forest Hills Drive" was the third album from J Cole all the way back in 2014. Even then the American was regarded as a real hip hop heavyweight, and since its release his stature has only grown. This special Black Friday release presents some of the album's key tracks on a fancy picture disc. Opener "Apparently" was nominated for Best Rap Performance at the 58th Grammy Awards, "Love Yourz" won a BET Hip Hop Award and "No Role Modelz" was certified platinum, so all in all these are some pretty iconic tracks from one of the scene's best.

  2. We Ain't Goin' Out Like That (instrumental) (4:18)
Review: The third single from Cyprus Hill's second album "Black Sunday" was recorded while the entire band was high on mushrooms. It was also the song that got cut short on Saturday Night Live after DJ Muggs lit up a joint on-air and started toking on it just before they performed it. Needless to say, it is a tune mostly about smoking and acquiring weed that sums up the hard hitting West Coast rap and Hill's alternative take on hip hop. This single is strictly limited to just 250 copies and comes with an instrumental version on the flip for more beat orientated crowds.

Review: This Juno exclusive is a hip hop beat from Australia that has had props from Public Enemy's DJ Lord, no less. A heartfelt eight-minute medley from Brisbane's DJ Bacon whose title is a mash up of Run-DMC and Beastie Boys, it is said that more than 150 samples feature on the two tracks and the resulting collages are real bangers. "RUN-BST Megamix (Part 1)" skews iconic vocals, cow bells, stabs and punctured kick drums through a streetwise lens, and part 2 on the flip offers a more tender groove with soulful vocals over crisp hits.

  2. Soul In Ya Mind (3:32)
Review: We could all do with a little more love, peace and unity in our life and DJ Tron is happy to oblige on his new one with Luana. The title track is an old school bit of hip hop with huge drum breaks, fills and a sing-along-chorus that's all about the good times. "Soul In Ya Mind" is a deeper and more considered jam with golden era flow and warmer chords, put still plenty of playful stabs and breaks to get you moving. Limited to just 100 copies but in three different colours, this one is sure to shift fast.

Four breaks, all wrapped up in their own unique vibe, there's a cinematic feel running throughout tapping into the OST source so many samples are taken from. Hungry for tension? Review: An original 7" of this gem will cost you upwards of 100 quid so Know How are doing us all a favour here. As EPMD, Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith were a red hot duo who served up many quintessential rap gems. "So Watcha Sayin'" is taken from their second album "Unfinished Business", imbued with scratching by DJ Scratch, deeply buried chords and of course a slick verse that is pure old school. While flipside "You Gots To Chill" has some fresh vocoder work, dusty drum loops and body popping bass, the a-side takes all the glory here.

  1. How's That
  2. Papi Pacify
  3. Water Me
  4. Ultraviolet
Review: Given the critical reception rightly afforded to Tahliah Barnett's superb debut album as FKA Twigs, it makes perfect sense for Young Turks to rustle up a swift reissue of FKA Twigs, the four track 12" that announced her to the pop music world last year. This EP was the first instance of Barnett's ethereal vocals weaved in amidst production work from Arca that was at times floating, others crushingly pressurised. Naturally the effects of the music are heightened when combined with Jesse Kanda's mind bending videos ("Water Me" especially) but late comers to the magic of Twigs will be all over this. Do check "Papi Pacify" as Arca is on some "Cry Me A River" era Timbalaand tip.

Review: Scarface's appeal endures many years after it first burned so bright, and Tony Montana remains an inspiration for many a young gangster, including studio gs like The Geto Boys who sampled various bits of his dialogue for these two tracks back in 1990. Here, the late DJ Ready Red serves up two edits, fully embracing the stereotypes that went on to become the norm for rappers in the years after. "Trigger Happy Nigga" is a bristling boom bap joint while "Scarface" rolls a little deeper with gun shots and scratching bringing the realness.

  2. Mind Of A Lunatic (edit) (4:37)
Review: First time round, this bonafide classic reached #23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the highest charting tune from the Geto Boys. Sampling Isaac Hayes' "Hung Up On My Baby", the Geto Boys' edit plays out in several movements and goes big and small. Stretched over a long legged beat with crisp snares and languid chords with lyrics that touch on a range of deep subjects such as post-traumatic stress disorder, the track was originally destined for a Scarface solo album before it was decided it was more valuable as a Geto Boys single. Wise move.

"The Wages Of Sin" pairs hard edged beats and low slung bass with Wu-Tang style shadowy soul to absorbing effect. "Dominant Frequency" utilises a quirkier sample paired with a slower, deeper cut beat that is full of menace and angst.

Review: The Originals crew kick off their new decade with more red hot funk heat they've got us accustomed to. This time it is jazz-funk great Bob James on the a-side with "Farandole", a classic that has been chopped down the size for this 45 by the crack crew behind DNA. Review: Electric Mojo is on a mission to delve into the history of electronic music and serve up some of its best moments. This new one is just that - a classic b-boy DJ tool that's linked to the first wave of breakdancing, and will likely turn all who hear it into aspiring body-poppers. First up, "122BPM" is a crisp future-retro electro tune with bubbling leads and warm, smeared chords that oozes essential feels. Review: Kid Frost's "Terminator" might well have turned 35 this year, but it still sounds fresh and from the future. Often spoken about as a perfect track by real electro heads. It has sleek bassline sounds, a slick DMX beat and flawless Oberheim synth-pads all finished off with a self-built vocoder vocal. Kid Frost's MC work here is as good as any you will hear and helps this tight title track stand head and shoulders above many others. Flip-side "Rough Cut" is just as essential. Review: "Call on Me" is the standout single from cult Japanese beat maker mabanua's 2018 album Blurred. It's an impossibly innocent and naive sounding track thanks to Chara's angelic vocal delivery and the gentle, carefree guitar licks beneath, but it gets totally flipped by Knxwledge. The in demand, LA-based Stones Throw artist reworks it into a slow motion beat with hazy chords and a superbly funky bassline. In his hands, Chara's vocal becomes somehow romantic, adding to the track's alluringly lovestruck vibe.

Review: To help us get ready for the harsh months ahead, ice cold Long Island MC Roc Marciano hits as hard as his boxing counterpart on this new collaboration with Damu The Fudgemunk. "Blizzard: Two Concepts For The 22nd Century" cuts deep and will transport you to the North and South poles of our hemisphere in the track's 2 distinct mixes. Of course, the production is just as key to this one's success; Fudgemunk is riding high this year after a big EP with Blu and MF Doom, and assembles some great beats and thematic scratching into the mix. With rhymes and beats this icy, you might have to store the wax in your freezer instead of the shelf.

Review: Some fans argue that "It Ain't Hard To Tell" is the best production on Nas' legendary "Illmatic" album. Large Professor certainly did his job in making it pop: the beat is killer, and the whole thing is driven by a Michael Jackson sample of "Human Nature". As if that weren't enough, samples from Stanley Clarke and Mountain are layered in to perfection and the smooth, sweet rolling beat draws you in over and over and Nas' creamy delivery finishes it in style. Flip over for the instrumental and bask in the glow of it all. Classic.

Possibly inspired by the passing of the late Jay Dilla, this music is perfect for relaxing and kicking back, or even warming up the early hours of the club. While Detroit hip-hop producers already proved that there's a mutual creative interaction between the cities house, techno and hip-hop scenes, it's now one of the cities hottest house producers laying down some smoked out, next level instrumentals in the vein of the late genius Jay Dilla, Madlib or Underground Resistance's Hipnotech sublabel.

Review: This mini-album marks a shift in emphasis for Lustwerk Music, with boss Galcher Lustwerk choosing to showcase the work of another producer for the first time. He's apparently been nurturing Florida-based Quavius for some time, encouraging the young producer to "experiment more" while following his instincts. It seems to have worked, because the majority of music on this debut release is top notch. It covers a lot of ground, with the A-side alone moving between R&B-inspired hip-house ("Love The Way"), hip-hop ("Magic Man"), woozy electronica ("R 'n' V") and spacey deep house ("Composure"). There's naturally plenty more to enjoy on the flipside, too, from the old school deep hip-hop bump of "M 320", to the crunk-tinged, cut-up goodness of closer "Can I Be".

Review: Released late last year, Dirty Drum Productions first "Crate Breaks" seven-inch offered up two sides of cut-and-paste drum breaks - with gaps in between - for turntablists to play around with. This second salvo follows a similar blueprint. What you get is a series of celebrated (and in some cases lesser-known) breakbeats lifted from rock, funk and soul records, EQ'd and re-mastered for maximum loudness. These breaks - arranged into loose "tracks" as "Crate Breaks 3" and "Crate Breaks 4" - are clean enough to either sample, or use during turntablist routines. If you buy two copies, you can even "double up" with them and create fresh backing tracks for the MC of your choice.

He makes his own beats, held a rap show on Swiss national and here one of his homemade demos is presented on Burning Sole. The first version was a raw, made in the kitchen jam with rough drums and noodling keys next to a heady whistle, while the flip side is a more refined lounge version with a fuller, richer, warmer sound and more steamy chords, as well as a hook sung by the producer's own young son. Review: First Word's latest must-have 12" sees label regulars Tall Black Guy (AKA hip-hop beat-maker Terrel Wallace) and self-proclaimed "chop artist" 14KT (real name Kendall Tucker) remix each other's tracks. The latter steps up first to re-configure Wallace's Moonchild collaboration "I Will Never Know" as a folksy, bass-heavy chunk of slipped soul/jazz fusion dripping with folksy acoustic guitars and ear-catching vocals. Wallace repays the compliment on the flip, delivering a warm, crispy and R&B-influenced hip-hop soul revision of recent single "The Power Of Same", featuring the seductive vocals of Muhsinah. If soul, jazz and hip-hop all float your boat, this should be an essential purchase.

Review: After offering up EPs titled "Hard Times" and "Changing Times" in 2017, Kaidi Tatham returns to First Word to complete the trilogy with "Serious Times". Of course, the music contained within the EP's tightly packed grooves is as joyous, rich as intricate as ever. Check, for example, "Don't Cry Now", a samba-soaked, sun-kissed affair that wraps harmonic freestyle vocals, twinkling electric piano lines and darting jazz-funk bass around a seriously shuffling groove. Tatham's much-discussed jazz-funk influences are once again given an airing on "Sugar", while his fine piano work takes pride of place on instrumental hip-hop head-nodder "Zallom". Best of all, though, is opener "Cost of Living", which emphatically weaves together all of these strands and more besides.

Review: This is something of a holy grail for hip hop diggers. The 1998 original is often pricey on secondhand markets because it is a first class example of hardcore 80's rap from Boston's TDS Mob. Their classic "Dope For The Folks" is a busy mix of spin backs, cut up and chopped vocals, vinyl scratching and self-aggrandising raps that hark back to the genre's heyday. "Crushin 'Em" is a more straight up rap jam with lo-fi beats all carefully recut by the good folks at Japan's Diggers With Gratitude label. Well worth adding to the collection.

  1. Keep Rising All Night Long (Sunday Service mix) (6:19)
Review: GAMM has been a treasure trove of edits, golden old soul and forgotten funk gems for an eternity and they come correct again with this monstrous dance floor dynamite on a loud, one-sided vinyl pressing: Ukokos & Jabco's hip hop and gospel styled rework of the world renowned clip of Kanye West's Sunday Service band doing a live cover of "Keep Rising". A majestic, triumphant and real floor filling, crowd pleasing bomb that will bring everyone together for many years to come.

Die Hard (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: DWG 7016. Rel: 24 Oct 19
  1. Die Hard (4:03)
  2. War Rap (5:01)
Review: Japan's Diggers With Gratitude have been working hard to licence the music of OG American rapper Unique aka Denarius Hemphill. This month they have got three of his best known, hardest to find and more desirable tunes coming out on limited edition 7"s. This time it's "Die Hard" that gets the reissue treatment after prices have climbed sky high since it initially landed in 2008. Mad scratching, crisp and hard hitting beats and uptempo, well-articulated rapping makes this a real timeless beauty. "War Rap" on the flip hits harder with darker stabs and prickly delivery next to alarm-like pads.

Pure Dynamite (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: DWG 7017. Rel: 24 Oct 19
  1. Pure Dynamite (4:53)
  2. Axe Maniac (2:24)
Review: Denarius Hemphill aka Unique put out just a couple of perfectly formed streetwise rap cuts in 1989, then another in 2008. That landed on Diggers With Gratitude who are rightfully revisiting his catalogue to make available again the tunes that have become really quite pricey. This is one of three such releases this month and focuses on "Pure Dynamite", a laid back, deep cut joint with positive vibrations and funky guitar riffs stitched into the soulful, leggy beats. "Axe Maniac" on the flip then gets busier and exudes plenty of 80s attitude.

Review: The King of Upstate, 38 Spesh, and Far Rockaway's Flee Lord are both super hyped in the hip hop world right now. The timing of their debut album, then, is just right to capitalise on that as well as prove any naysayers wrong. And it does that across nine hot cuts of golden era hip hop, with evocative skits and slick MPC action all overlaid by some edgy vocal deliveries. With the help of notable guests such as RJ Payne & Grafh, Che Noir and Termanology amongst others, 38 Spesh and Flee Lord are on top of their game.

Review: Boom: three years, three albums. No biggie for Bristol duo The Allergies, Jalapeno's biggest success story since Kraak & Smaak. Each album shows them getting deeper into the groove, creeping away from the cheeky samples and sculpting their own pedigree funk originals. With Ugly Ducking Andy Cooper onside through the mix from the wild ride vibing "Fade Away" to the white knuckle lyrical fire of "Run It Back", there's a real band feeling to the whole album as familiar voices thread throughout the jams... including that of UK hip hop legend Dr Syntax.

Review: Since initial release in 2003, this classic from Atmosphere has been in and out of print and received various represses as a result. It is the gift that keeps on giving, frankly, it is an album takes you on a metaphorical journey through politics, emotions and the physical. Personal stories and vulnerable truths come from Slug's rich writing and richer delivery combined with complex rhythms, cosmic synths and funky drums that all help elevate the record yet further. It might not get the props of many of its peers, but this underrated gem should be on the shelves of any discerning hip hop collector.

Review: It's not often we hear from beatmakers from Minsk in Belarus, but Awlnight sure put his hometown on the map here with a standout album that features contributors from Belarus, Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Germany and the USA. As such the music is similarly borderless, with jazzy late night stoner jams like "High", brilliantly off-kilter dub reworks like "Lightitup/Grinder" and crunchy lo-fi cuts such as "Hey Sweet Ladies" all sitting next to each other. The tracks are tantalisingly short, but that will only keep you coming back for more.

Review: Following a series of self released albums over the past three years which saw them expand on hip hop classics with an auspicious level of jazz virtuosity, Canadian jazz trio Badbadnotgood grace the Innovative Leisure imprint with this enlightening collection III. Consisting of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, and Alex Sowinski on drums, it's not hard to see why Badbadnotgood have been getting the usually hushed toned Gilles Peterson all exciting after a few listens of the nine tracks here. If you dug those cover versions you will love this album.

Review: Root Down is an experimental album from 1994 when The Beastie Boys locked themselves in a rehearsal space and went to town on studio experimentation and live jamming. It came between "Paul's Boutique" and "Check Your Head" and resulted in two previously unreleased versions of the title track and snippets of music recorded while on tour in Europe. There is the typical Beastie Boys mix of floor rocking riffs but with funky new flows stitched in and thus charts the period in which the band went from their post punk guitar roots to a more new-groove driven sound.

Review: Damu The Fudgemunk has enlisted the help of vocalist Blu to bring "Ground & Water" to life. Like all his albums, it is story telling based with superbly crisp production from the Washington DC man, backed with sweet flowing, tight rhymes from the Los Angeles rapper. The mood is often introspective and personal, with plenty of lyrical depth throughout. Faith, guilt, spirituality, humility and plenty more all come up on these thoughtful raps. Musically there is vital variation with some harder hitting jams next to the more blissed out and deep cut grooves.
