Review: Mythstery Records is the new label from Mr Beatnick, one of London's finest selectors and producers, with the debut release coming from Breakplus, a Swiss artist he shares a long affiliation with. A decade ago Beatnick and Breakplus issued a joint 12" of dusty beat science under the Thieves of Time alias, and whilst the former may well be more well-known now, the latter is a superb producer on the basis of this Instant Bull 12". Described as a "hip hop tribute to Anatolian rock", the seven track 12" largely lives up to this billing with Breakplus laying down some serious mid-tempo MPC heat. Those seeking some dancefloor thrust will certainly be satisfied with B-side tracks "Silver Bangle" and "An Atol Alien". A very promising start for Mythstery.
Review: Bouncing his time between Antibalas and his Marcos Garcia and Chico Mann projects, Chico returns after several years of silence with a sweet slice of lolloping broken soul. With its soft padded synths and cotton wool hug of Kendra Morris's vocals, there's a delicate tumble to proceedings as we nod and slide into a sound that's remained in its own soul universe since emerging almost 20 years ago. When done as well and with as much authenticity as this, it's timeless.
Review: Party-starting twosome Computa Games - AKA producers Quickie Mart (arf) and Kung Fu Chris - can usually be relied upon to bring the goods. They've certainly hit the spot with their second seven-inch for Superjock Records. A-side "Rock Creek (Revenge)" is particularly good: a whole-hearted, thoroughly authentic tribute to Jonzun Crew style electro full of rubbery slap bass, crispy drum machine hits, colourful synth stabs and robotic vocoder vocals. They flip the script on flipside banger "Apache 3000", a Double Dee and Steinski style tribute to early NYC hip-hop culture built around an impressive array of cuts, sratches, breaks, beats and vocal snippets seemingly lifted from all manner of early rap and electro records. Naturally, the Incredible Bongo Band's "Apache" break provides the necessary sonic glue.
