Ferramenta EP
Ferramenta EP (limited 12")
Cat: POLEGROUP 071. Rel: 18 Jan 24
Regra (5:45)
Ferramenta (5:43)
Amarante 9am (5:41)
Nota (5:50)
Review: Portuguese power wafts our way from PoleGroup's very own Norbak, a pre-eminent producer from the label's neighbouring country. Across his relatively short career Norbak has developed a distinct personal style, ever-evolving and changing. On this latest EP, we first hear 'Regra' and 'Ferramenta', both of which aggressively ferment a series of metrically unsound stares-into-the-abyss, combining knocky, low-reg fidgets with toppier emergencies and washouts. B-siders 'Amarante 9am' and 'Nota' techno prisoners either, opting for a more classically industrial sound vis-a-vis alarming stabs and crackly lower mantles.

Strobe Light Memories (5:27)
Insomniac (5:01)
Patterned Vision (5:23)
No Need To Talk (5:34)
Review: If you're looking for fresh sonic experiments which nonetheless hold fast to the dancefloor-worthiness of contemporary European techno, look no further than Rotterdam's Arts collective. Flaunting their selective prowess, the label here present a four-track release from producer Off/Grid, who impressively nails that coveted sonic tension many producers can only grasp after; a sound suspended between dreaminess and forcefulness, a mesmeric militant fist that first packs a punch, but then unclenches to sprinkle magical sand in our eyes. 'Strobe Light Memories' pins this down best; a behemoth of a beat jostles for the attention of our ears, all front-and-centre, only to give way to a cosmically faint breakdown, before returning once again.

Close Your Eyes EP

Close Your Eyes (5:00)
Deep Space (5:38)
Dance For Me (5:20)
Fight For A New World (7:02)
Review: Charlotte De Witte's KNTXT label is one of new school techno's most influential and has very much helped to take techno into harder, darker, trance-tinged realms in recent times. Alignment is one of the artists who has helped with that and now serves up more blistering cuts on the Close Your Eyes EP. The title track is a monstrous opener with bright synths and serrated saw-shaped sounds cutting up the flat-footed drums. The hard techno vibes continue on 'Deep Space' and more trance energy washes over 'Dance For Me' which is decidedly 90s in vibe. 'Fight For A New World' closes down with the sort of hands-in-the-air energy of an epic festival anthem.

Blades (5:07)
Whistleblower (6:12)
Grom (6:05)
Skyhigh (5:36)
Review: Techno troubadour Yan Cook has a fine discography on some of the most respected labels out there. Now he heads to Ukraine's Cooked, a young but perfectly formed imprint, and kicks off his EP with 'Blades,' which is all melon twisted synths and driving techno kicks. 'Whistleblower' then slips into a deeply atmospheric groove with gurgling bass and watery effects and 'Grom' is all about the swing in the drums. Gritty textures and insistent claps add to the thrill of it all and 'Skyhigh' is a more frosty dub techno cut that leaves out breathless.

FOXBAM INC 001 (feat Mr Gasmask, Mark Archer remixes)

Foxtrot - "Freaky Foundations" (7:08)
Arkanoid - "Flemish Skool" (Mr Gasmask remix) (6:55)
Egebamyasi - "Fryer State Of Unconsciousness" (6:23)
Tokyo Acid Cru - "Acid Ride" (Mark Archer remix) (8:08)
Review: Foxbam Inc is a new label from underground Scottish talent Foxtrot and countryman and long-time acid lover Egebamyasi. Both feature on this first EP which is a various artists affair inspired by many years of playing and partying in the dance world. HIs 'Freaky Foundations' kick off with flat-footed and hard-assed techno, then comes Mr Gasmark who has roots in back metal but loves "a dark acid cocktail". He serves up a high-octane 303-laced monster banger here in the form of a remix of Araknoid. Egebamyasi's 'Fryer State Of Unconsciousness' is a wall of distorted noise and sheet metal synths that never let up. Last of all is a remix from Mark Archer, half of the legendary Altern8, and here offers up a jacking house cut with fat acid lines tearing it up.

Open Your Mind
Review: HI LO has had some huge collabs with Filth On Acid boss Reinier Zonneveld and now makes a step up to Adam Beyer's mighty Drumcode with more of his maximal techno sounds. 'Crescendo' is a raw slammer with hard edge and raw drums hitting hard beneath incendiary hi-hats and flashes of bright synth and twisted acid. It's a main room weapon of the highest order. 'Open Your Mind' is more ragged and unhinged, it's stark hits and bulky broken techno drums beneath a raucous mix of percussion and saw-tooth synths. No messing with these two.

David Moleon - "Ylocascas" (7:20)
David Oblivion - "Motorhead" (7:04)
Review: Veritably wild hard techno from London's Polymeric Records, who've been hard at it since 2006. Four new ones from Steve Redhead, Maxx Rossi, David Moleon and David Oblivion all jackhammer the ear in quick succession, keeping levels redlined and atmospheric surface-tensions taut. Pressurised, cosmic and mystical themes abound on these pummelling techno numbers, of which our highlights are Oblivion's 'Motorhead' and Redhead's 'The Mist Of Time'.

The Way (6:33)
Review: A fresh top-up to the vogue of 'trance-infused techno' by Alignment, the Berlin producer whose heavyset techno chops come straight to Charlotte De Witte's KNTXT label, which has launched the careers of several younger artists. Burbling Detroit voices command us to 'attack' through the opening droner 'Attack', an inception boomer if we've ever heard one. Followers 'Dream State' and 'Multiverse' timeslip through grit and dirt and arpeggios, getting faster and faster before Alignment shows us 'The Way' on the final roundoff.

This Does Not Contain Rave Stabs (5:38)
Squirrel Power (5:20)
Hips Don't Fly (6:36)
That B Track (5:18)
Review: Pure Hate returns with some of the hardest techno you could ever wish to hear, this time from Tripped. This stuff should come with a warning because it is so dense, dark and caustic that it is utterly disorientating and not far off being walls of sheer impenetrable white noise, but all fired at you at one hundred miles an hour. The hits on 'This Does Not Contain Rave Stabs' come at you as if fired from a pneumatic drill, the drums of 'Squirrel Power' are square and devastating, the synths of 'Hips Don't Fly' are like random and spraying machine gun fire and the distorted low ends of 'That B Track' will tickle your inner ear they are so visceral.

In My Mind (6:30)
First Light (6:44)
Trippin' (5:17)
Review: There's something pleasingly primal and no-nonsense about Amelie Lens' brand of nostalgia-soaked big room techno. As ypu'll no doubt be aware, Lens specialises in banging, rave-igniting workouts which combine nods to the glassy-eyed, early-90s Belgian club sound with blisteringly big, booming 21st century techno beats. 'In My Mind', the title track from her latest EP, is another breathlessly excitable variation on this energy-packed formula, with atmospheric spoken word snippets, jumpy electronic riffs and twisted 'Hoover' noises riding a bowel-bothering bassline and insanely heavy drums. Lens opts for deeper, spacey-sounding chords and psychedelic acid motifs on the similarly breathless 'First Light', before opting for an even more hallucinatory, brain-melting distorted techno sound on 'Trippin'.

I Absorb You (5:37)
Biting My Skin (5:38)
Your Voice In My Mouth (5:57)
Double Heart (6:41)
Review: SNTS and Sacred Court are staunch fixtures of the German hard techno circuit, and this reputation is more than topped up on this latest addition to the repertoire, 'Everything In Distance'. Taking on a vampiric theme, titles like 'I Absorb You', 'Biting My Skin' and 'Double Heart' land like clawed blows to the neck, confounding with their unrelenting kick thrums and surrounding industrial atmospheres, gothic and miasmic as they come. More texture than usual is heard on this record than most pummelling-techno artisans abide, with the four-by-four kick drive almost sounding to have completely gotten lost in the fog by the time we reach track three. Listen if you dare.

Brain Washer (5:52)
Energy Rush (6:42)
Focus (7:44)
Relief (4:59)
Review: DJ Disrespect again shows no regard for the rules of electronic music on this new and visceral outing on 777. It is a 12" he dedicates to "some of the feelings associated with the tribulations of mental issues" and that's reflected in the sounds which are dense and full of duality - drums going one way, coarse synth textures and percussion puling in another direction. On 'Energy Rush' screeching synths tear through the middle of the high tempo techno drums and 'Focus' is a compelling and parboil linear banger. If his mission is to unite people and offer comfort and community with his music, DJ Disrespect has succeeded here.

Review: You can always depend on Ali Wells' mighty Perc Trax for the most brutal industrial strength tackle and its latest release certainly delivers that. Scottish enfant terribles Clouds take up the reins on TPT 096 titled Clubmatter. All the classic tropes of 90s dance music are mashed together in an unholy mixture on the foreboding energy of 'Ravesight', heading into post Y2K peak time techno on the functional main room affair of 'NRG - Density' and 'Corestyle' respectively - the latter's injection of classic trance arpeggios adding to its adrenalised effects. Finally, the Perth drug legends go out all guns blazing on the pummeling 'Liquid Tank' with its foreboding bassline underpinned by the most visceral kicks.

Chris Liberator & Sam Dfl - "Psychedelic Drug" (feat Tab K) (7:10)
Zyco - "Jetpack Pilot" (7:03)
Acid Chochi - "Work It, Girl!" (7:26)
Review: Colombian artist Lior has the blessing of the Stay Up Forever crew who are supporting the development of his 76B label, but if you were expecting straight-up free-party acid techno on this record think again. Lior and Tab K team up for the resoundingly cheeky 'Dancehall Vibes', which plays around with brass stabs strapped to uptempo techno with a result which is surprisingly chirpy. Chris Liberator and Sam Dfl have a more typically rave-ready approach on 'Psychedelic Drig', while Zyco makes the right moves for an industrial-strength slammer before Acid Chochi rounds the EP off with a synapse-frying slice of peak time wormhole business.

Review: It is 30 years since Curley and R-Zac joined forces to cook up their Sahara Tekniq EP way back in 1994. Surely, the legendary Dutch free party scene hero is sadly no longer with us, but with R-Zac he very much laid down a definitive blueprint for this type of textural, dense techno. It is the first of a big series of newly remastered reissues from the Network23 label and it offers up four visceral, high-impact, live-sounding techno workouts that are packed with anxious synths and whirring machine sounds, unrelenting drums and more which is sure to bring real chaos to the clubs.

Review: AcidLab serves up more innovative findings from their hard techno research operations courtesy of an array of uncompromising talents on this new various artists release. Acid Steve kicks off with 'Working In An Acid Lab', a straight-ahead banger with bristling percussive loops and slamming drums. Chris Liberator & Sterling Moss & Athar then combine forces to fire futuristic acid techno out of a machine gun and across the dancefloor and BadBoyPete vs Shnootz's 'Tekno Sound' is amped up and urgent drum funk. Noise Frequency then shuts down with dark distortion in 'Lost Humanity.' This is only a second drop from this new young label but one that again establishes it as a vital imprint.

Review: 'Acid'(when referring to the TB-303 hardware that makes the sound, that is) is rarely leant into as an artistic inspiration - it's usually just used as a tool for making a cool sound. That all changed with the launch of Acid Avengers recently, a French series that not only showcases the various artists behind the contemporary acid techno scene in France, but which treats acid as an entire universe unto its own right. Post-apocalyptic acid mutants blessed with powers of tactile corrosion are portrayed on their front covers, matching the raucous vibe of armageddon portrayed through their contributing tracks - here from twin doom harbingers Jacquarius and Mono Enzyme 307. Don't miss these ultra-saturated, high-concept heaters.

Review: DJ Ali from Melbourne is up next on Berlin-based Blue Hour Music with the Regeneration EP, a collection of high-energy tribal techno tracks reminiscent of the late 90s. The EP opens with the bruising 'Interceptor', followed by the pummelling peak time track 'Paradox Cell' which maintains the tension. Over on the flip, 'Nightwatch' is more of a heads down affair that's optimised for losing yourself to under the strobe lights, and the title track goes out all guns blazing with its mesmerising tones underpinned by the most furious of rhythms.

Both men have been at this for many years and bring considerable know how, studio chops and dance music understanding to an EP that is aimed square at the rave. It's all about hands in the air breakbeats, old school rave energy, lush chords that come on stronger than the rush of an E and are steeped in the culture of pirate radio, illegal parties and warehouse sessions. Different Ways
Review: As the title suggests, Some Other Place Volume 2 is the second installment of a triptych of releases from The Exaltics for The Clone West Coast series. As with previous music from the Solar One boss, the four tracks here see The Exaltics look to both American and Dutch schools of electro but the results are nonetheless distinguished by his own unique signifiers. The title track sets the tone nicely as waves of sumptuous blurred noise ride a supple skeletal rhythm, whilst "Waves Of Fear" lives up to it's paranoid title with a marauding low end bass line the dominating element on a classic slab of darkside electro. "The Way Out" is perhaps the most conventional track here, with Witschakowski laying down an atmospheric but club ready 808 workout which is still a cut above thanks to the German's arrangement skills. Which leaves room for the slower, weirder and mushy excellence of "Different Ways".

Now he finally makes a welcome return with a new EP that coincides with the 10th Anniversary of his own SNTS Records. This is the final part of an ongoing series which has so far taken in the likes of 'Chapters' and 'Scenes'. It is a darkly seductive techno four-tracker with lashings of industrial influences, visceral synth designs and soot-black drum lines that are ghoulish and gothic in equal measure.
