  1. Starting Over Again (4:06)
  2. I Want You Back (4:26)
Review: Pure boogie, pure voice... UK singer/songwriter Cheri Maree comes correct on this Boogie Back rebirth over two uncut 80s style Brit funk gems. "Starting Over Again" is the more seductive of the two with its silky groove and hushed vocals while "I Want You Back" goes into boogie overdrive with lavish synth bass (wait for the solo), velvet chords and strong backing vocals. If you enjoy Atmosfear or Hi-Tension, you'll love this!

  1. Feel Like Jumping (4:12)
  2. Perfidious (3:43)
Review: A decade has passed since Daytoner released his first record. Since then, the Cornwall-based party-starter has delivered countless heavyweight slabs of sample-laden funk breaks and hip-hop-fired mash-ups. For his latest trick, he's decided to tool-up Marcia Griffiths' rocksteady classic "Feel Like Jumping". His revision is very much a "light touch" affair, despite the presence of some punchy new hip-hop drums and a sprinkling of spoken word samples. Flipside "Perfidious" is another loved-up, hip-hop ready reggae revision. It, too, hits the spot, suggesting that both cuts will go down a storm on a variety of party-hearty dancefloors.

  1. She Took Me Back (3:13)
  2. It's All Over Now (2:51)
Review: French funk fusioneer Alexis Evans hits home with the second single from his new album "I've Come A Long Way". "She Took Me Back" is the opening track from his LP and you can hear why; soaring deep soul, all swooning and sweeping, it's an instant heart warmer that sets the scene for the whole album. "It's All Over Now" is a much more upbeat take with chunky honky tonks, tight horns and a fantastic band leading on the breakdown. His style, tone and delivery belie his young age. It ain't over yet...

Confrontation (limited 7" repress)
Cat: ATH 019. Rel: 13 Mar 19
  1. Confrontation (3:46)
  2. You & Me Babe (4:20)
Review: The Athens of the North label is a blessing for those whose tastes in soul, funk, disco and boogie tend towards the obscure and ludicrously hard-to-find. Their latest re-issue fits into both categories. Seemingly the only single they ever released, "Confrontation" came out in 1981 on Arista but copies have since proved incredibly hard to find; so hard, in fact, that original 7" singles now change hands online for nearly L300. The title track, produced by A Taste of Honey's Perry Kibble, is brilliant, though, delivering a soulful, heartfelt disco-funk jam full of smooth backing vocals, bubbling clavinet lines and deliciously righteous horns.

Tan To Setsu (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: MSH 103. Rel: 13 Mar 19
  1. Tan To Setsu (2:08)
  2. Jongara Bushi (3:04)
Review: The Mushi 45 label doesn't release all that much, but what it does put out is invariably insanely good. For the avoidance of doubt, this two-track missive sits in that category. It serves up two rare, sought-after 1970s gems from Rinsyoe Kida, Akira Ishikawa & Count Buffaloes, who made some of the tidiest Japanese funk, jazz-rock and jazz-funk of the period. A-side "Tan To Setsu" is superb, with the assembled players brilliantly blending traditional Japanese style melodic motifs - played on traditional instruments - with a riotous, high octane funk backing track rich in heavy bass and fiery horn lines. "Jongara Bushi" is similarly inclined and every bit as raucous.

  1. Movin' On A Groove (3:18)
  2. Disco Music (3:33)
Review: **REPRESS ALERT** Barbara Lynn (b. 1942) is an American rhythm and blues guitarist, singer and songwriter best known for her 1962 R&B chart-topping hit, "You'll Lose a Good Thing". Her highly sought after 1976 song "Movin' On A Groove" gets a much needed repress here from London's Soul Brother, with the funky "Disco Music" featured on the flip. The title track is a soul anthem for those who know, and it's been sold for extortionate prices on the second-hand market but thanks to Soul Brother you can finally get a copy for a reasonable price! A very strong 45 release for DJs and collectors alike.

Bounce Rock Skate Roll (7" limited to 300 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: BAB 010. Rel: 13 Mar 19
  1. Vaughn Mason - "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" (4:23)
  2. Bad Bascomb - "Black Grass" (3:16)
Review: More from the matter-or-fact Breaks & Beats seven-inch series, which offers up DJ-friendly "slight edits" of funk, soul and disco classics built around extending the drum breaks in sometimes hard-to-mix classic cuts. The tenth volume in the series kicks off with a mix-friendly tweak of Vaughan Mason's roller-boogie anthem "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" that expertly stretches out the previously all-too-short instrumental intro. Over on side B, Bad Bascomb's odd but brilliant country-funk hoedown "Black Grass" gets a similar treatment, with Breaks & Beats' un-named re-editor sneakily extending sweaty drum breaks here and there throughout the track. Given the quality of those breaks, this is a very good thing indeed.

  1. Gerald McCauley - "Wondering" (feat Cold Diamond & Mink) (3:03)
  2. Cold Diamond & Mink - "Wondering" (instrumental) (2:59)
Review: One of Finnish funk imprint Timmion's most enduring stories; Pratt & Moody and Cold Diamond & Mink's 2017 "Lost Lost Lost" gets an update with Gerald McCauley. Not particularly known for his singing or songwriting (but very much active in other aspects of the industry) the original's raw blues struck a chord so strong in him, he put pen to paper and dulcets to tape to provide a new perspective on the track. The results speak for themselves. There's no wondering here... It's a full blown heartache conclusion.

  2. Jazz Funkin' (4:48)
Review: Super Disco Edits add more fire to their Grand Union series with two never-before-released brit funk cuts recorded in Birmingham in 1980. One four-hour session, and nary a rehearsal beforehand, this is the sound of a young Midlands four piece just jamming and pulling the vibe together effortlessly. Vocals on "Jazz Dancin'" come courtesy of Jaki Graham, who was previously in the Paul Hardcastle produced act Kiss The Sky. With her late entering vocals and that sublime flute line, it's criminal this release never saw the light of day at the time.
