Review: De Wolfe Music Library is reissuing Keith Papworth's 1975 album which will be music to the ears - pun intended - of record diggers who probably thought they might never own a copy of this grail. His masterpiece is perfectly entitled and is defined by super hard hitting drums and high action hits. The minimalist sounds and heavy grooves have funk deep in their bones, and extra theatre comes from the whistles, natty basslines and big riffing guitars. Papworth not only wrote for this label but also has music featured in Monty Python skits and movies. This, though, is his standout work.

Following up an initial cassette release, this oppressive, impressive masterwork now comes to obi-stripped vinyl via Disques De La Spirale. Said to have been fashioned out of many-a-trinket (drums, violin, springs, samples, reiterations, overdubs, trumpets, synths, distortions...) the likes of 'Damn Spring', 'Glissement De Terrain' and 'Alarm Twist' pay nods from every facet from dub to spiritual to impressionism, confounding and fascinating in equal measure.

Review: Alan Parker & Alan Hawkshaw's Black Pearl is a classic from 1973 that deserves the regular reissue treatment it enjoys. It is a cult classic bit of library music on De Wolfe that takes the form of a collection of orchestral funk pieces that are perfect examples of the dramatic music styles synonymous with the 70s. Some pieces are widescreen, string laced opuses with lavish 60s exotica influences while others are more moody and dramatic with thunderous drums and edgier strings.

Review: First vinyl re-issue of Evan Parker's duo with George Lewis. Transferred from the original masters, Otoroku initially discovered that the original Incus LP was cut at the wrong speed - and so, they present the first vinyl issue of the correct masters, or 'mastas' as Adam Skeaping, the legendary engineer who is also responsible for Six of One and Compatibles, fondly calls them. Lewis had not long recorded his solo, which mixes lively hints of Ellington and tender lyricism with total experimentation in three part overdubbed trombone. 'From Saxophone To Trombone' veers towards his wilder end of technicality, some of Lewis' rarer, starker improv - all avant garde burbles and bubbles, breath control and scalar flights. It's a recording of two young masters, documented beautifully, and released for the first time on vinyl at its intended speed.

On Collective Calls, only the fifth release to appear on the newly-minted Incus label, percussionist Paul Lytton arrives with an arsenal of sound making sources to push Parker into ever new territory.

On Forfolks, his latest missive on Chicagoan imprint International Anthem, Parker flips the script, delivering an octet of solo guitar works that's as varied as it is jaw-droppingly good. Beginning with a piece of layered, cyclical minimalism reminiscent of Reich and Pat Metheny's 'Electric Counterpoint', Parker flits between jazzy interpretations of classic guitar pieces, droning and effects-laden soundscapes, lilting soundscapes, melancholic masterpieces and meditations on a theme.

Review: While moving from his long-term home Chicago to Los Angeles a few years back, Tortoise member Jeff Parker rediscovered a swathe of old home recordings - "beat projects" built around samples of dusty old jazz tracks. These became the starting point for New Breed, his most expansive solo album for some time. Full of his usual loose and evocative jazz guitar, the set sits somewhere between lo-fi post-rock/jazz fusion, experimental hip-hop, and softly spun electronica. Regardless of style, it's a hugely evocative and entertaining collection of tracks.

Review: Is there a more on-point modern jazz label than Chicago's International Anthem? The imprint has a knack of releasing far-sighted music that goes way beyond standard jazz, offering up spiritual and experimental fusions fully in-keeping with the genre's genre-defying roots. This solo set from Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker - his second for International Anthem following 2016's "The New Breed" - is a superb example. Breathlessly eclectic in the most inspiring of ways, it sees Parker combine virtuoso jazz guitar solos and mangled, guitar-powered aural textures with all manner of live and sampled sounds to create a dizzyingly good album that variously touches on soul-jazz, post-rock, free improvisation, Terry Riley style minimalist soundscapes, ambient, jazz-funk and much more besides. In a word: brilliant.

Review: Theo Parrish's masterful Sound Sculptures Vol 1 on triple LP format gets a timely repressing!! In total here there are 9 of the 27 tracks from the full double CD version but these still run the gamut of Theo's inimitable talents, from rough and tumble disco edits to saccharine soul, raw beatdown and leftfield esoterica. Be sure to check the Omar S- featuring "Synthetic Flemm" and long time Juno favourite "Flotation Device". If ever there was a selection of tracks that fully showcased the incredible breadth of production talent this man has, this is it. Not to be missed!

Review: Six new tracks from Detroit's deep house hero Theo Parrish mark his most significant release since the Wuddadji album three years ago, based around the 18 minute dancefloor epic 'Dance Alone' and the Afro-slanted 'Cleo's Theme', closing in on 11 minutes, alongside a host of other cuts of varying sizes and types. 'Real Deal', for instance, is a beatless instrumental interlude consisting of organ and Spanish guitar, while the title track is nearly all off-kilter beats. Parrish's approach, as ever, is soulful and funky enough to keep house fans on side, while also being so raw and stripped down that techno fans love it too and this has plenty of both.

After that fruitful start to their working relationship they finally flourish into a new full length that arrives soon in the form of Free Myself, It arrives, as you would expect, on triple vinyl on Parrish's own Sound Signature label, but also here as a CD. It is a lovely deep house exploration with smooth vocals of Rose - which come in the form of a soulful stream of consciousness - over Parrish's dusty, hypotonic beats.

As you can expect, the grooves are dusty, complex and rooted in house but with plenty of influences from soul, funk and jazz. Review: Since its' initial release back in 2000, Theo Parrish's Methods Of Movement mix has attained cult status. 16 years on, the set has lost none of its' potency, or for that matter its' ability to entertain. An exercise in classic dancefloor eclecticism, it offers a sprint through dusty disco, soul, funk, Afrobeat, boogie, Detroit techno and deep house. It's effectively the kind of set you'd expect Parrish to play at a house party, laying down favourites from Tullio De Piscopo (the Balearic classic "Stop Bajon (Primavera)", Luther Vandross, Tony Allen, Incognito, First Choice and pal Kenny Dixon Jr. Packed full of energy, and shot through with soul, Methods Of Movement is Theo Parrish at his mercurial best.
