  1. Jerry Washington - "Don't Waste My Time" (3:45)
  2. Timmy Thomas - "It's What They Can't See" (3:08)
Review: Newsflash: we can't handle Jerry Washington's love. But we sure can handle his fiery soul! Armed with just a touch of jazz on the fills and chorus, there's an upbeat, insistent energy to this Glades reissue that happened to be one of his last singles. Meanwhile on the B, fellow Glades alumni Timmy Thomas winds us right down with much more of a sensual soul ballad in the form of the swooning "What They Can't See". Two stunning sides of soul for two very different occasions; Suncut deliver the goods once again.

  1. Just Plain Funk (3:22)
  2. Hang Loose (3:44)
Review: "Just Plain Funk"... Few titles come with such explicit promises and back up the goods quite as well as Don Thompson's 1977 party jam. Sleazy, low-riding, slo-mo funk with big juicy keys, clear story-telling and a groove that could glide through concrete, it'll have you rolling in the cubby hole within minutes. "Hang Loose" isn't just a pretty title, either; with its lavish horn leads and swaggering soft-organ groove, it's an order.

  2. Open Up Your Love Door (2:40)
Review: Taken from Big Crown's recent homage compendium Mr Brown Eyed Soul, "Put Me In Jail" and "Open Up Your Love Door" are two quintessential examples of Sunny Ozuna's powerful Latin soul allure and ability to stop your heart at 20 paces. The former is a real swooner with crisp plucked bluesy guitars and full band harmonies while the latter takes more of a ballad tact with sincerity dripping off every word Sunny confides. Backed with sublime Sunliner harmonies once more, this is an exceptional taster from the Big Crown's detail-rich collection.

I Feel A Groove Comin' On
  1. South Side - "I Feel A Groove Comin' On" (3:07)
  2. Combo Kings - "Groovey" (2:22)
Review: Record Shack smash it once again as they deliver two obscure slabs of authentic soul. Both groove-based jams, South Side's northern soul-style "I Feel A Groove Comin' On" grabs you by the short and curlies with its high energy hook, firing keys, hot horns and soaring vocals while the Combo Kings apply a little more popcorn magic with lavish keys, big blues feels and a wry melodic nod at a certain fabulous quartet.

Get Down
Get Down (7")
Cat: SG 049. Rel: 06 Nov 17
  1. Get Down (4:56)
  2. Double Decker (3:59)
Review: Long-serving Japanese band QASB tend to have two musical modes. Their releases are either sweet and soulful or funky and fulsome. This 7" definitely sits in the latter category. A-side "Get Down" is a cheery, up-tempo workout full of rising orchestration, bouncy disco-funk grooves, jazz-funk flourishes and a vocal from A Yu Mi urging us to shake our stuff on the floor. The party continues on the mostly instrumental flipside "Double Decker", a sumptuous, all-action affair full of sparring instrument solos, sweaty disco drum breaks and dreamy freestyle vocal improvisations. It reminded us a little of Pleasure's "Joyous", which is no bad thing.

Third Rock (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: ATH 049. Rel: 30 Oct 17
  1. Third Rock (4:01)
  2. Wake Up (part 1) (4:20)
Review: By Athens of the North's standards, these two tracks from short-lived '70s disco-funk outfit Pure Essence are not that obscure. In fact, label boss Euan Fryer has stated that he chose to lead with album track "Third Rock" because he thinks it is better than the more sought-after "Wake Up". Certainly, "Third Rock" is something of a gem - a warm, California blue-eyed soul style workout full of flanged guitars, jazzy solos and a Steely Dan-goes-disco groove. Of course, the even hazier "Wake Up", with its' politically charged lyrics and immersive production, is also superb. We would expect nothing less from the reliable and on-point Athens of the North.

  1. Bian Kou
  2. E Clolo
  3. Mioukouna
Review: London-based reissue label Kalita is here to take you deep into the hidden corners of African grooves, kicking things off in style with this infectious selection of cuts from Ernest Koffi, otherwise known as NST Cophie's, recorded in Paris and released on a private press LP in 1980. "Bian Kou" is a loose and limber disco funk number with impeccable slap bass, while "E Clolo" brings a more rounded, distinctly 80s flavoured production. Taking over the whole B-side, "Miokouna" takes on a more distinctly Afrobeat-minded demeanour and beams the Ivory Coast sunshine into your ears with irresistible force.

  1. Biosis Now - "Independent Bahamas" (Nik's Mukatsuku edit) (3:30)
  2. Afro Train - "Tumba Safari" (Nik's Mukatsuku re-edit) (3:28)
Review: This tasty 7" from the reliable Mukatsuku label sees 2 killer funk treats for the dancefloor. On the A-side there's a handy re-edit of Bahamian combo Biosis Now's ludicrously rare "Independent Bahamas", a righteous call for self-governance backed with a wonderfully fuzzy and full-throttle tropical funk groove. A copy recently for $700 on ebay for the very first time of the original 45. On the flipside we find "Tumba Safari" taken from the recent Oriki compilation, a suitably heavy chunk of Ivory Coast afro-funk from long forgotten outfit Afro Train. Weston's version naturally emphasizes the drum breaks, heavy horns and razor-sharp guitars, in the process tightening it up for contemporary club play.As played by Hunee,Red Greg and Nicola Conte

  1. Mr Floods Party - "Compared To What" (3:48)
  2. Fork In The Road - "Can't Turn Around Now" (2:27)
Review: The latest 7" missive from the Outta Sight camp features two more impossible-to-find rarities. On the A-side you'll find a storming chunk of horn-heavy, Hammond-rich funk from obscure US psychedelic band Mr Floods Party. Originally released on GM Records in 1971, the cut has long been an in-demand amongst Northern Soul collectors thanks to its stomping beat and impassioned vocals. Speaking of Northern Soul favourites, flip to the B-side for the greatest moment from short-lived Detroit soul group Fork In The Road. Originally released in 1970, "Can't Turn Around Now" is a thrillingly energetic workout full of heavy instrumentation, surging vocals and an even heavier backbeat.

Review: BlackCash & Theo dust off two pairs of gloves... First their crate digging gloves to unearth Thrust, the one-off album Ohio duo McNeal & Niles recorded in 1979, then they dust off their editing gloves for two immaculate extensions. If you enjoy anything on Claremont (especially Paqua) then you'll be all over these cosmic instrumentals - notably the soft harmonies on "Summer Time" and the endless, star-gazing guitar twangs of "Punk Funk. You may recognise a few samples here, too... Madlib and Motor City Drum Ensemble are two of many who've enjoyed the fine hooks of Mc Neal & Niles.

Review: Released 40 years ago in 1977 ''Rhythm Of Life '' by James Mason was possibly one of the greatest vocal Jazz fusion releases of all time . New vinyl imprint Dynamite releases a quality limited edition double pack release showcasing the highlights from that album plus some additional rare versions of the tracks. The version of 'Sweet Power Your Embrace'' is taken from the incredibly rare 7 inch promo only issue. On the flipside is a different version of the club floor dancer ''Free'' which features a heavy bongo workout . The 45 second slab on this package features two tracks featuring the vocals from Clarice Taylor on ' I've Got My Eyes On You'' and the superb 'Slick City' which were both never commercially released as a 45 before.

Coffee Cold
Cat: FMG 10. Rel: 23 Oct 17
  1. Coffee Cold (3:25)
  2. Space (1:53)
Review: While Canadian composer/producer Galt MacDermot will always be most famous for composing the score to legendary musical "Hair", he was also responsible for some killer jazz, soul and funk records in his time, too. Take "Coffee Cold", for example. Originally tucked away on his obscure 1966 jazz-funk LP, Shapes of Rhythm, the track sees him adding fluid jazz-piano solos to a chunky breakbeat-driven instrumental workout. On the flip you'll find "Space", a jaunty - if strangely mixed - fusion of lolloping but crispy drum breaks and jousting Harpsichord and piano solos. The track is arguably best known for being sampled on Busta Rhymes's "Woo-Hah", though before that it featured on MacDermot's 1969 soundtrack album, Woman is Sweeter.

  2. Sticky Wicket (3:13)
Review: Cock-a-doodle-do, we love funking with you: London troupe The King Rooster continue their firing vein of form on Funk Night with their third 45" since August. Two sides of instrumental rawness with firm emphasis on Sam Montero's busy hammond blasts, there's more than a whiff of Booker T & The MGs at play as both cuts proceed to suck into their sleazy, sweaty worlds; "Hot Potato" is all organ and slippery wah wahs lurking in the background while the brilliantly titled "Sticky Wicket" zooms out for a widescreen shot of the whole band working in harmony breaking down to each player and rebuilding in a powerful climax. Tasty.

Cat: BAB 003. Rel: 30 Oct 17
  1. Juice - "Catch A Groove" (3:58)
  2. Fuzzy Haskins - "The Fuz & Da Boog" (4:04)
Review: The latest limited 7" single from the Beats & Breaks camp features subtle, DJ-friendly edits of two break-diggin' favourites. On the A-side, Juice's 1976 jazz-funk B-side "Catch a Groove" gets tweaked and extended, with lengthier passages of drum breaks at the beginning and end, as well as a sizeable percussion workout midway through. Turn to the flip for a similarly minded treat of Fuzzy Haskins' album-only cut "The Fuz & The Dog", where jazzy guitar licks and riotous horns buzz around a heavy, Blaxploitation-inspired funk groove. While less well known than the A-side, it's arguably the stronger of the two tracks; certainly, its extended percussive break is particularly suitable for hip-hop style doubling up.

Review: Just 300 copies of this tasty, club-ready 7" single from the Soopastole Edits stable exist, so you'll have to move fast to secure a copy. As usual, Jalepeno Records' regular Soopasoul is at the control, using his trusty scalpel to deliver two hot-to-trot interpretations of a lesser-known cut from the "Sex Machine" sessions. On side A, you'll find "Shake Your Money Maker (Part 1)", where Maceo Parker's killer saxophone solos rise above Soopasoul's slightly tightened up version of the JB's killer groove. Flip to the B-side for more sax solos and a groove that mines some of the original track's more percussive sections for hip-swinging, toe-tapping thrills.

  1. A Little Taste Of Soul (3:02)
  2. Unwind Yourself (3:42)
Review: Since 2003, Record Kicks has been the "explosive sound of today's scene" and, by the looks of this latest nugget from Martha High, they're right on track to fulfill that promise! The talented US vocalist was on the front row of James Brown's hits in the 60's and 70's, but she's since then focused on her own glorious soul material. "A Little Taste Of Soul" comes as a ray of shining light on a wet October afternoon, full of funky sensibility and heartfelt vibes, making for the perfect dance number for those looking for that groovy thang. For the B-side, "Unwind Yourself" slows the tempo down, breaks up the groove, and unleashes High's Goddess-like voice amid those tasty breaks - what a winner!

Review: Here's something of a surprise from the normally funk and soul-centric Athens of the North label: a "heavy salsa" 7" featuring two killer cuts from contemporary outfit Grupo Magnetico. It's a taster for their forthcoming debut album; if these two straight-to-tape cuts are anything to go by, that set will be well worth picking up. Both tracks sound like they could have been recorded by Colombian musicians in New York during the heyday of Boogaloo, with A-side "Vampiras" - a typically undulating salsa groove which is enlivened by group male vocals and heavy horns - just edging out the gentler but punchier "Hermanos Latinos" in the "standout" stakes.

Review: Jalapeno jive maestro Soupasoul has been a busy funkateer this year. Not least with this impeccable edit series. Subtly resculpting funk standards and forgotten classics with full emphasis on the breaks they blessed us with, every single "45 has been a dancefloor riot... Not least this jam hot take on "Give It Up" and "Rock Steady". 4. Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony - "Spanish Boogie" (3:33)
Review: Soon, DJ Harvey will release The Sound of Mercury Rising, a compilation themed around some of the music championed at his summer residency at Pikes Hotel, Ibiza. This four-track taster 12" not only acts as a sampler for the CD version, but also offers the chance to own four excellent and hard-to-find gems. You'll struggle to find a more Balearic disco cut than Danish outfit Tore's 1979 killer "She's a Lady" - think the Bee-Gees with Flamenco guitars - while Elkin & Nelson's "Abran Paso - Aboa (Enrole)" is a spiraling chunk of flamenco-psychedelia fusion. Elsewhere, Van McCoy & Soul City Symphony's "Spanish Boogie" is a jaunty disco number full of crunchy Clavinet lines and rising horn lines, while Tony Esposito's "Danza Dell'Acqua" is as eccentric and wide-eyed as they come.

Released 1976, OG copies fetch almost L200 and just these two tracks alone hint at why. Shimmering with a strong Faze-O feel with an evocative contrast of falsetto and deep baritone and twinkling instrumentation, both tracks swoon with everything that was so smooth and emotional about the label who gave the world Jackie Wilson, The Chi-Lites and Gene Chandler. Show some love.

Review: Electro Wayne's mid 80s-focused Circuitry project get busy on Peoples Potential Unlimited with two starlit synth boogie originals; "She's Just That Type Of Girl" is a playful east coast funk flex with a slight freestyle touch to it. Harmonies, light touches on the keys and exceptional drum production, it's a sassy slice that will warm-up any floor. "Under Pressure" lowers the tempo but thrusts up the sensual urgency with great percussion and come-to-bed spoken word. Authentically done.

Instantly recognisable and still as hot as it was in 1970, its essential "45 status remains fully intact. Review: Russian psych-rockers turned acid funksters Bamma Gamma have only one previous release to their name, a fine cassette-only mini-album that dropped last year.
