  2. Sugar Pie Desanto - "Go Go Power" (Soul Flip edit) (4:19)
Review: More cheeky 45 party power from Aldo Vanucci and Del Gazeebo as they hit their third Soul Flip edit release of the year. Martha Reeves & The Vandellas 1968 letter to gabber DJs of the future "I Can't Dance To That Music You're Playing" gets a subtle stomp in the beat department while Sugar Pie Desanto's 1966 R&B pant swinger "Go Go Power" gets the extension its also deserved. Go go Soul Flip.

  1. Mashena (3:07)
  2. Samha (3:00)
Review: Hot in the slipstream of last year's self-titled debut album comes two brand new adventures from the London-based Sudan-exiled troupe. Both cuts recorded in Abbey Road Studios, both led and characterised by singer Regia Ishag's breath taking vocals; "Mashena" packs a vibrant punch with triumphant horns and insistent, urgent vocal repetition while "Samha" is a much deeper blues piece where Regia's Sudanese vocals take on a rhythmic pattern of their own over a dreamy, star-gazing setting.

  2. Check It Out (The Mighty Zaf edit) (6:07)
Review: Kalita Records are proud and honoured to announce the first ever official reissue of the Sophisticated Ladies' sought after 1980 New York disco single. The short-lived outfit consisted of Emma, Laura and Reather, who released two singles between 1977 - 1980. They toured America (while also touring internationally as The Bobbettes) and received radio airtime throughout the country. Here Kalita have chosen to highlight their scarce cut "This Ain't Really Love" and have invited The Mighty Zaf to rework their version of Bobby Womack's "Check It Out" making it perfect for modern disco dancing.

  1. Put It On Him (2:52)
  2. Go On & Have Your Fun (2:49)
Review: George Brown (Vocals, Bass) Johnny Prejean (Drums), Charles Conrad Greenway (Vocals, Keyboards) Cliff Faldowski (Guitar) and Henry Boatright (Sax) made for quite the ensemble under their Soul Brothers Inc moniker, a project that ran from the late 60s through to the mid 70s and one which defined the Texas soul sound thanks to countless releases through the infamous S.B.I. Records. "Put It On Him" and "Go On & Have Your Fun" featured on one of the 7" singles that the band put out in 1971, and they still sound as fresh and as funky today as they did back then. Most importantly, both tunes have a very definite 'Texan' sound running through them, nodding to a country living that could not be matched by artists from Detroit or Philadelphia. It's their city, their vibe, their sound - and it sounds damn fine.

  1. Take Me To Your Disco (5:56)
  2. Special Lady (4:37)
Review: Splendor were a very short lived outfit - '70s funk/soul group including Billy Nunn, Robert "Bobby" Nunn, Sascha Meeks and Richard Shaw. "Take Me To Your Disco" and "Special Lady" were released in 1979 as the first single from the group's eponymous and only LP. It represents a heyday of disco - a zeitgeist where big budgets made for some amazing and seminal productions. With the likes of Philip Bailey (of Earth, Wind and Fire fame) and the legendary Tommy Vicari on production duties - you can really hear the magic on these ones.

  1. Marcos Valle - "Mentira" (3:43)
  2. Toni Tornado - "Me Libertei" (3:39)
Review: Two premium Latin funk documents on one limited 45, Mr Bongo deliver once again: Marcos Valle needs no introduction to Brazilian music enthusiasts. "Mentira" is a self-cover as Valle takes his 69 classic "Mentira Carioca" and develops the dynamic with a vocal style that's highly reminiscent of Donovan. Flip for Toni Tornado's Black Rio anthem "Me Libertei". Fusing sleazy rock n roll with jazzy Latin soul, madly this is the first time it's ever graced a 45!

  1. Get To Steppin' (3:22)
  2. Blinded (3:16)
Review: Having bubbled away in the LA funk scene since forming in 2015, the trio comprising drummer Michael Duffy, organist Frank Carey and guitarist Matt Hornbeck finally unleash their debut recording and it's a serious mission of funk intent. "Get To Steppin'" fulfils its motivational title with rapid boogaloo pace and wild jazz fusion in both the organ and guitar leads. "Blinded" is more of a classic instrumental funk piece with yet more wily organ adventures taking the lead over an insanely tight groove. Blinding.

  2. Akoko Ba (5:10)
  3. Simigwa Soca (3:44)
  4. Burkina Faso (3:50)
Review: Analog Africa's superb Limited Dance Edition series reaches volume nine via a fine collection of cuts from Ghanian bandleader Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, who spent the early 1980s fusing highlife and funk sounds with spacey electronics, wild synth lines and righteous vocals. It's all fire, of course, though the Highlife-funk flex of opener "The Message" and deliciously summery, jazz guitar-laden Afro-Caribbean workout "Simigwa Soca" are probably our pick of the bunch. Elsewhere, "Akoko Ba" is a driving, solo-laden workout rich in dueling horns and highlife guitars, while "Burkina Faso" is a sublime experiment in P-funk, Ghanaian style. In a word: essential.

Review: David Axelrod's 1969 album Songs of Experience - the now legendary follow-up to 1668's similarly acclaimed Songs of Innocence - has long been regarded as something of a classic, not to mention a constant source of samples for hip-hop producers such as DJ Shadow, Pete Rock, Madlib and KRS-One. As this reissue proves, it remains a peerless release. While it was inspired by the poems of William Blake, the album's tracks brilliantly fuse elements of jazz, European classical music, jazz-funk, rock, pop and traditional British and Irish folk music. It's a stunning set of instrumental tracks, all told - a kind of imaginary soundtrack to the best film never made.

Review: Celebrating 50 years of one of the most definitive fusion records ever made, Now Again present the most fitting remaster Axelrod's critically acclaimed debut album Song Of Innocence has ever had. An immense piece of work that pays homage to William Blake and brought together nodes and notions of rock, classical, funk, psychedelic and boogaloo, this reissue comes straight from the original masters with engineering and consultation from Axelrod's production partner H B Barnum, original keyboardist Don Randi, his widow Terri and producer T-Ray. Still as complex and cosmic and sounding better than ever.

Review: 18 years and eight albums deep: Melbourne funkateers The Bamboos return with their latest long-one and it's a whole new blueprint. Seemingly broader and brighter in sound and energy, the development in sound reflects their move to bigger arenas with big vital poppy moments such as the triumphant opener "Lit Up" and the anthemic riff heavy "War Story". Elsewhere we're body slammed in northern soul stampedes such as "Salvage Rites", we get woozy with a little rock sleaze ("Pony Up") and breath-taking by raw soul authenticity ("You Should've Been Mine"). Here's to another 18 years and eight albums.

Review: Afro7 unearth some incredible Kenyan treasure: Black Savage were one of the many strong voices in the 70s pop culture boom in the freshly independent Nairobi. A fizzy brew of blues, soul, rock, psychedelia all brought together with afrofunk magic and progressive conscious lyricism, their 1975 album Something For Someone is a vital mosaic of flavours ranging from the cosmic rock of "Exotica", the Hendrixian blues of "Do You Really Care" and "Savaged". Sadly it suffered a highly limited press and faded into obscurity. Until now. Afro7 have tracked the band down, detailed their story and brought this 43 year old album back to life with the respect and praise it deserves. Something for all of us.

Review: Originally released way back in 1970 on the legendary Fania label, Wanted By The FBI For The Big Break - La Gran Fura remains one of legendary Latin artist Willie Colon's finest moments. Featuring his trombone playing and vocals prominently throughout, the album draws on various contemporaneous Latin styles - cha-cha-cha, salsa, Bolero, Rachero, and so on - to present a set that's as vibrant and ear-pleasing as it is on-point. There are subtle nods towards American funk and soul throughout, as well as a fine mixture of both dancefloor heaters, torch songs and more laidback moments. This edition, beautifully packaged and presented by The Get Down label, also marks the album's first appearance on vinyl since 1980.

Review: Shed dwelling funkateer Daytoner has been surreptitiously priming us for this monumental third album moment throughout the year with cheeky 45s "Needed You" and "Second Stomp". Now the moment has landed and it's every bit as varied, infectious and feel-good as we hoped it would be. Highlights include the Brand New Heavies style slink new jazz of "Pacific", the Labi-sampling strutter "I Get By", the sweaty stomping northern soul jam "Needed You" and the big swing sing-along "Sicka". And that's not even half of it.... He didn't name it Off The Hook for nothing.

Idris Muhammad on drums, Melvin Sparks on guitar, Prestige's most prolific saxman Houston Person and a selection of covers of the likes of Isaac Hayes ("Ellie's Love Theme") and Quincy's "Hicky-Burr". Pure jazz funk early 70s style, Caesar's command of the keys weaves a gossamer thread throughout the instrumental trip weaving and bobbing amid Bridgewater's wild trumpet narrative ("Hail Ceasar!"), the rippling wah wahs on Sylvester Stewart's "Runnin' Away" and plenty more. Close to 50 years old and still sublime; this reissue is long overdue.

Review: The Freekwency quartet are back with their second LP and, as you'd imagine, it's another high-calibre boogie trip that filters down into house and electro - precisely what you need on a mid-August weekender! Seal The Deal is choc-a-block with cameos, from peeps like Myles G or Francoise D'Argent, who respectively explore all the various elements of proto-house - from the vintage house of "I Can't Help Myself" to the classic, SAM-style boogie of "Gotta Give Up (My Love)". In essence, this album is a sure way to get people dancing, and by people we mean everyone in the damn room! Not a bum track in sight on here, so dig in and have a boogie or two...
