  1. Tattletale
  2. Tattletale (part 2)
Review: The saying goes that no one likes a tattle tale, but any self respecting funk collector would be hard pressed to give up on the chance of owning this latest dinker of the same name from the esteemed Antibalas collective. Composed by crew member Victor Axelrod, "Tattletale" has been a long term fixture of live sets by Antibalas and it's great to see them finally commit it to seven inches of wax. Laid down during the recording sessions for their last Daptone long player, its spread across two parts on this seven and is a sublime slab of Ethiopian funk that sees Antibalas doffing their collective cap to '70s pioneers Mulatu Astatqe, Wallias Band and Mahmoud Ahmed.

  2. Horizon's Theme (Pt 2) (2:49)
Review: Prior to this year, funk connoisseurs and collectors have known only one record from the 70s Bay Area funk troupe Brass Horizon. That was "We Just Want To Play" and it's been known to go over $1500 in the past. 39 years after its release Super Disco Edits have incredibly unearthed an unreleased gem! So large it takes over both sides, "Horizon's Theme" is a groove heavy instrumental jammed with that classic laid back Berkley vibe where all players get a chance to shine. Part one is all about the organs while part two lets the horns tear the groove a new one. What a find.

Review: Another jewel for all the deep diggers out there produced by Calvin Arnold aka Billy Byrd - soul and funk singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer from Georgia, USA. "Lost In The Crowd" is a solid funk workout, featuring an intense rhythm and a powerful vocal. On the flip, there is a more chilled-out soul jam titled "Silly Kind Of Love" for the connoisseurs out there. Reissued due to public demand here on a nice great-sounding 45" by Vienna's always reliable Record Shack.

Review: In 1979, a year after he co-founded Yellow Magic Orchestra, Haruomi Hosono joined forces with acoustic guitarist Takahiko Ishikawa and keyboardist Masataka Matsutoya to record "The Aegean Sea", a gloriously sunny set of jazz-fusion, disco and jazz-funk cuts shot through with Mediterranean musical influences. It's the kind of thing that would now be considered "Balearic", so it's little surprise to see the set getting a European reissue for the very first time. There's much to admire throughout, from the funk-fuelled dancefloor cheeriness of "Reggae Aegean Woman" and Bob James/Jimmy Smith-influenced bliss of "Image", to the sun-baked gorgeousness of "Day Break" and thrillingly jaunty "Atlantis".

Review: Odion Iruoje aka Sound President was one of Nigeria's top producers in the 1970s and early '80s, but his solo recording career was restricted to just the one release, Down To Earth. Originally released on Iruoje's own label, Odion Ltd, in 1983, it was only ever distributed in small quantities and Soundway Records have given this much needed re-issue. Iruoje is known for having signed the legendary Fela Kuti to major label EMI and acting as his producer throughout the early '70s. Starting out with the proto funk rap cut "Identify With Your Root (Which One You De?)", there's some killer West African boogie-funk-soulfulness on "Ikebe" and some feel good disco vibes; Lagos style on "Love Care".

  1. Kashmere (5:00)
  2. Scorpio (4:43)
Review: Athens Of The North strike gold once again as we head to Texas, circa early 70s, for two more big funk gems from the Now Again vaults. Only previously available on albums (which were all known to be limited to about 1000 units) both "Kashmere" and "Scorpio" get the full 45" treatment. The former ignites with a lavish horn salvo before dropping into a trumpet led blues groove, while the latter leans back on a smoother jazz boogie groove. Both absolutely crunch.

  7. JNB - "I'll Be The One" (4:57)
  8. Quinn Harris - "I Will Always Love You" (3:25)
Review: As someone who briefly escaped 70's Glasgow and got a taste of the golden age of NYC Disco, Al Kent is a perfect choice to lead you through a classy selection of some choice and rare Disco treats. Having used his huge collection in the past for re-edits and originals, he also took the bold step of forming his own band in 2007 under the name The Million Dollar Orchestra.

The selections here reflect the point at which Funk and Soul mutated into Disco, with most of the tracks capturing that pre-Moroder organic sound. Lee Alfred's Rockin-Poppin Full Tilting for example has a laid back vibe similar to Curtis Mayfield's more uptempo tunes. New Ghetto Express's version of Standing On The Verge of Getting It On (originally by Funkadelic) up's the tempo on the wigged-out classic, again combing the Funk with a Disco groove.

Lypso Disco by Smile Street People, as you'd guess from the title, has a playful Calypso lilt and bounce to it. Cosmic Disco by Patricia White on the other hand doesn't sound like something that Todd Terje or Lindstrom got their cues from, but it is a fun song with some brilliantly random thumb-piano playing in the background!

Anyone looking for samples will have a field day among these tracks, Sweet Daddy Floyd's I Just Can't Help Myself for example has a break in the middle to die for. You could loop up 4 bars practically anywhere and have something pretty damn funky to work with. For that reason alone, it's well worth having a listen and broadening your horizons.

  1. Confusion (part 1)
  2. Confusion (part 2)
Review: Regarded by many as Fela and The Africa 70's zenith, Confusion is 26 minutes of total Afrofunk immersion delivered over two sides. Gradually building - thanks largely to Tony Allen's dynamic drum work that's as delicate as it is powerful, Fela's dreamy, almost jazz-like keys and a rigid, spine-like rhythm guitar - the groove and narrative is developed with a natural sense of well-instrumented drama. A genuine classic, if your collection isn't blessed with this now is most certainly the time.

  1. On A Clear Day You Can See Forever (3:40)
  2. Comin' Home Baby (2:19)
Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** 2019 marks 50 years since this timeless classic's original release. The Peddlers' "On A Clear Day You Can See Forever' is a sumptuous smooth jazz journey full of organ solos and deep vocal tones. The British soul/jazz trio is known for creating a unique melange of beat, jazz, cabaret, rock and soul that must be heard to be believed. Flip side "Comin' Home Baby" is like passing through a cloud composed of equal parts Tom Jones, Jimmy Smith, Georgie Fame, Mel Torme, Alan Hawkshaw and dozens of lesser jazz/lounge vibe-creators. Get this copy for a spine-tingling rush of harmony from the late sixties.

Cat: WC 25000. Rel: 26 Sep 19
  1. Destruction (2:34)
  2. Off-spring (feat Leon Morgan) (2:33)
Review: Funk fans hold tight: Food City have licensed a reissue of a holy grain tune from 1969 that would usually cost you a month's rent to purchase. The People's Choice were a short-lived group from Grand Rapids, Michigan who only put out a handful of tunes but still managed to leave their mark. "Destruction" is a raw jam with a consistent funky groove as a baseline weaves its way in and out. Big and expressive, it's bound to get any dancefloor going. Flip side "Off-spring" that's led by some florrid flute playing is just as effective.

Cat: ATH 049. Rel: 26 Oct 17
  1. Third Rock (4:01)
  2. Wake Up (part 1) (4:20)
Review: By Athens of the North's standards, these two tracks from short-lived '70s disco-funk outfit Pure Essence are not that obscure. In fact, label boss Euan Fryer has stated that he chose to lead with album track "Third Rock" because he thinks it is better than the more sought-after "Wake Up". Certainly, "Third Rock" is something of a gem - a warm, California blue-eyed soul style workout full of flanged guitars, jazzy solos and a Steely Dan-goes-disco groove. Of course, the even hazier "Wake Up", with its' politically charged lyrics and immersive production, is also superb. We would expect nothing less from the reliable and on-point Athens of the North.

Review: Obscure Californian group The Real Thing (not the Liverpool 4 piece ) who recorded for US label Whiz enjoy a very special spotlight on Super Disco Edits. Both cuts previously unreleased; they're as fizzy as the product they share a slogan with... "Give It Up & Turn It Loose" takes James Brown to turbo charged pastures, tearing up the funk rule book so rapidly they've got friction burns. "It's A Family Thang" brings us back down to earth with such unified tightness and positivity it would make Sly and the Stones blush. The real deal.

  1. Say Brother (edit) (3:52)
  2. Bustin' Out Of Doors (4:03)
Review: For Athens of the North's latest release, Euan Fryer has turned re-editor. The acclaimed digger has taken a scalpel to his two favourite "DJ sides" from Stark Reality's notoriously heavy catalogue. As he explains on the Athens of the North website, Fryer's version of 1968 single "Say Brother" - a psychedelic pop era funk anthem in some quarters - was inspired by a desire to get rid of the famously freaky ending, which tended to scare rather than inspire dancers. Elsewhere, his tweaks are mostly on the mastering side of things (he's made it noticeably louder without losing any of the original flavour). Over on side B Fryer delivers his snip of warm-up favourite "Busting Out of Doors", lopping off the random ending while allowing the original's trippy instrumentation room to breathe.

Review: Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One's on/off funk boogie project Tuxedo gets the remix treatment from an all-star/all-genre cast that could only make sense on a label like Stones Throw. Kaytranada adds a loose Plant Life style swing, long-time Snoop confidant Battlecat retains more of the synth juiciness while adding his own west coast funk signature while Jean Tonique flips the disco bird with a lavish almost Balearic twist that you could instantly imagine Greg Wilson or Luke Solomon playing. All complete with instrumentals this is a very well dressed package. Dapper.
