  1. It's Up To You (How Far You Go) (4:13)
  2. Do It To The Max (4:39)
Review: Given that one of the founders of Al & The Kidd Records, Carl Kidd, was the musical driving force behind turn-of-the-'80s Washington D.C combo Light Years, it's perhaps unsurprising that the re-born disco-era imprint has a wealth of previously unheard material from the band to share. The label's latest "45" showcases two of these cuts. On the A-side you'll find the Clavinet-heavy D.C disco-funk of "It's Up To You (How Far You Go)", a decidedly cosmic wig-out with urgent vocals and instrument solos aplenty. Flip for the spacey synths, rising horn lines and Mass Production style disco-funk hustle of "Do It To The Max".

  1. Supposed To Be (3:17)
  2. Distractions (2:23)
  3. Bride Of The Zombie (2:18)
Review: Fly-by-seat-of-pants funk from Parisian instrumental troupe The Mess and fresh new singer Lisa Melissa; Q Sounds drop this ultra-limited three-piece 45" that raw, pacey and straight from the depths of her soul. "Supposed To Be" is driven by an organ-slamming hook and glistening textured guitars, "Distractions" sways with more of a softer, soulful stance that provides stacks of room for Lisa to let her delicate emotions peep through while "Bride Of The Zombie" is a straight-up instrumental blues funk piece from The Mess themselves. Only 200 in print - don't mess around with this one!

  1. Little Eva - "Dynamite" (2:21)
  2. Little Eva Harris - "Get Ready/Uptight" (2:32)
Review: Two awesome covers from Little Eva who, fittingly, is most famed for giving us the famously covered "Loco-Motion". "Dynamite" is homage to Mr Dynamite himself, the Godfather of Funk James Brown. Taking the "I Feel Good" hook and making it her own, it's an instant winner. "Get Ready/Uptight", meanwhile, is a medley of The Temptations and Stevie Wonder. It's very bit as tight you'd want it to be. Once stupendously rare, now your while this press run lasts. 100 per cent essential.

  2. Machito - "Knock On Wood" (2:18)
Review: Wanna hear the Isley Brothers classic "It's Your Thing" given a Latin shakedown? Mr Bongos have got you covered on the latest 7" in their splendid Latin 45s series! Originally issued back in 1974 on TR Records, this Los Africanos cover is a rum heavy Nu Yorican funk-soul instrumental featuring screaming Hammond organ and FX. It's very expensive in original form now, so shout outs to Mr Bongos for pressing it up here along with an equally good 1968 cover of instrumental, boogaloo version of Eddie Floyd's all-time classic "Knock On Wood" from Machito & His Afro-Cubans.

  2. Get It On (instrumental)
  3. Fffreak (vocal)
  4. Fffreak (instrumental)
Review: There's a cool air of mystery about this Sacramento-based contemporary disco producer. Letting the music do all the talking, he's provided four different solutions for all party scenarios. Leaning back heavily on an 80s boogie flex, both "Get It On" and "Fffreak" comes with delicate sexy vocals and supreme, sopping wet synth bass. The former comes with a larger vocals and more emphasised synth riffs while the latter is a more subtle, heads-down jam with softer vocal delivery and more melodic meanders. With added instrumentals thrown in for good measure, this covers all disco bases. It would be 'cryminal' not to check this out.

  2. Moon Bounce (4:01)
Review: When it comes to new boogie and synth-soul with an authentic flavour, you can't beat Chicagoan institution Star Creature. Predictably, their latest 7" should be another essential purchase for synthesizer lovers everywhere. It comes from Love's High, a collaborative project helmed by storied Israeli beat-maker Soul Supreme and vocalist Marlon Penn. "Love Generation" is a jaunty and colourful affair, with Penn's sumptuous vocal and hooky trombone motifs rising above waves of synth-bass and glistening electronic melodies. Turn to the flipside and you'll find intergalactic instrumental "Moon Bounce", which fittingly reminded us of Moon B and Dam Funk.

  1. Everyone Needs Somebody (2:47)
  2. Crazy About You Baby (3:05)
Review: Straight out of Kansas via Solo in LA circa late 60s, this rare-as-hens-teeth 45" has passed hands for bionic bundles almost striking four figures in recent times. Now liberated by AOTN sister label Owls Of Athens, its loose soul funk can be felt by everyone. "Everyone Needs Someone" sees Leroy Tucker guide his troupe amid brazen horns and rolling toms. "Crazy About You Baby" flips the tone for a more bluesy ballad led by a more heartfelt Leroy backed by lonely strums and warm organs. Two sides, two stories, AOTN strike gold once again.

Review: Brazil45 are on what you call a 'roll' at the minute, and they've started dropping the bombs nice and early into the New Year. This latest double-header features the talents of the obscure Brazilian singer Joao Luiz - out on independent presses back in the early '70s, and impossible to grip in original formats - and his ultra-funky and hazy "Super Muhler", followed by the one and only Toni Tornado, who features here with the excellent, laid-back, and sexy jam that is "Podes Crer, Amizade". A pair of gems, served on a 7" platter, just how we like them.

Review: The holy grail of Hawaiian Funk has landed! Mike Lundy originally recorded his solo LP The Rhythm Of Life in Honolulu in 1980, sharing the same studio with Hawaiian funk legends Lemuria and Aura. Both sides of this 7" are essential: heavy funk breaks on "The Rhythm Of Life" and breezy island sounds on "Tropic Lightning". This is the first time both tracks have ever been available on 7-inch format. Limited to 500 copies worldwide, this marks the first release from Honolulu-based reissue label Aloha Got Soul.

Review: Lugnut Brand are one of those labels releasing and championing deep, sensual funk and soul in 2016. We say this because there aren't many good ones around, so it's refreshing to hear stuff so dope and fresh out and up on our vinyl charts. Here we have two funky little slices of organ-fuelled funk, two parts of "Sal's-U-Save" to be precise, but which are really just one long funk bullet spread across two sides of the 7". This is jerky, fun, upbeat dance music with a glorious late '60s twist.

  1. Harold Mabern - "I Want You Back" (5:24)
  2. Funk Inc - "Sister Janie" (5:14)
Review: Tennessee's legendary jazz pianist, Harold Mabern, is surely one of the kings of the mighty Prestige label, and his material helped bridge the gap between jazz and funk back in the 1970s, alongside the likes of Idris Muhammad, The Jimmy Castor Bunch and all those geniuses. "I Want You Back" is a stone-cold classic and contains one of the most hummable trumpet lines ever, and if you hear closely it's been reworked and sampled by none other than the King of pop when he was only a little one. Funk Inc's sublime "Sister Janie" resides on the flip, a more lo-fi funk bullett for the diggers, and complete with a dusty organ!

  1. Finnish Funk (2:55)
  2. Shot Through The Grease (2:50)
Review: MiT return to King Underground to follow last year's sizzler "At Jody's". Two sides, two vibes, all instrumental: "Finnish Funk" is a classic sleazy street piece. A 70s scene setter with a New York state of mind and a dynamic arrangement that gradually unpeels and reveals, it's another smoker from the long-standing troupe. "Shot Through The Grease" has much more of a sultry, introspective feel. A smouldering slow and low cut with all the right twinkles, it's a sure fire baby maker. Threesy does it...

Happiness Is Just Around The Bend (heavyweight vinyl 12")
RCA
Cat: PR 65002P. Rel: 22 Nov 17
  1. Happiness Is Just Around The Bend (6:22)
  2. Evening Of Love (6:42)
Review: Although Main Ingredient member Cuba Gooding later scored a mid-'80s hit with a synth-heavy re-make of "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend", it's the band's 1974 album version that remains the superior version. Gently dubbed-out around the edges and rich in killer early disco instrumentation, it remains one of the band's standout moments and should be in any discerning DJ's collection. On this timely reissue, it comes accompanied by a slightly lesser known chunk of peak-time brilliance: string-laden 1981 underground anthem "Evening of Love". Although not particularly fast by disco standards (around 113 BPM if our calculations are correct), it's something of an energy-packed stormer.

Review: Previously only available on US promo 45 - these 1973 Afrodisiac-era cuts from The Main Ingredients are well overdue. First up is a beautiful take on the Isley Brothers 1972 classic "Work To Do" (also famed for its Average White Band cover in 1974) while the B is draped in the powerful vocal harmonies and lavish strings of "Instant Love". Proof that sometimes all you need are two ingredients to cook a beautiful feast for the soul.

  1. Back Into Your Heart (3:49)
  2. Dance, Dance, Dance (3:26)
Review: Sam Shepherd's Melodies International imprint has barely put a foot wrong to date, serving up a string of must-have reissues. Predictably, the label's latest offering - a facsimile reissue of a thoroughly obscure but in-demand disco 7" from 1979 - is another belter. A-side "Back Into Your Heart" is particularly potent, offering a rich, cheery and pleasingly fuzzy dance through horn-heavy disco-funk pastures, with a loved-up lead vocal joined by cascading strings, intergalactic synth solos and energy-packed drums. Turn to the flip for "Dance, Dance, Dance", an urgent chunk of funk-fuelled disco-rock that's almost as essential as the majestic A-side.

  2. Standing On Mars (5:27)
Review: Talk about a comeback... Their first single in over 40 years Manzel (who most will know for the breaker's favourite "Midnight Theme") return with two brand new originals. Still super-tight and heavy on the vibes and comprising two of the three original members (including Manzel Bush himself), it's clear they've still got the midas touch for fusion and funk. "High & Tight" is as woozy and feel-good as you'd want it to be with a big street chorus on the climax while "Standing On Mars" is all slips, slides and skids with big organs, roomy guitar and a build up that defies gravity. Welcome back Manzel!

Review: Two powerful bossa nova workouts from 1972: Brazilian chanteuse Rose Maria delivered two incredible funk jams on Tapecar which escaped her prolific album releases and never enjoyed a repress. Until now... The Afro-Latin soul of "Deixa Nao Deixa" is all about the sudden dynamic from purring verses to emphatic, harmonic chorus while "Avenida Atlantica" takes a more straight-up funk route with its dominant horns and heavy boss break. Instant party material.

  1. Sabu Martinez - "Hotel Alyssa Sousse,Tunisia"
  2. Benny More Y Su Orchestre - "Babarabatiri"
Review: Mr Bongo have united two hugely influential cuts of pure Latin dynamite right here - neither of which have ever been pressed to 7" before. The familiar far-west-meets-north-African fusion of Sabu's "Hotel" still hits as hard now as it did in the 70s. With screaming horns and emphatic Q&A vocals, there's still nothing else out there that sounds anything like this. For the B we head back to the 50s for a bone fide Cuban missile; "Babarabatiri". A firing jazz document that's been covered by the likes of Tito Puente, Quantic and many more, those spiralling horns will arrest you the second the needle hits the wax.

Review: Legendary singer songwriter Barbara Mason is represented in the finest fettle on this 1974 reissue. "World In Crisis" first appeared on her Transition album. Complete with warm harmonies and soft cinematic orchestration, her honey-toned sermons cut through the mix with a cool sense of dreaminess. "Give Me Your Love", meanwhile, is a fantastic cover of the Curtis Mayfield classic where here surging emphasis coats the groove with silky come-to-bed whispers. Stunning.

  4. Tuto Bay (3:32)
Review: After two 45s on Les Disques Bongo Joe, Dutch Afrofunk space cadets make their debut on Soundway with their first full EP. Hurling all their roots and inspirations into a heady, bewitching brew of west African, Columbian, Caribbean, Latin and all-round cosmic fusion, the results are four slabs of world funk gold. "Down In The Basement" updates highlife styles with a salubrious big-bottomed disco twist, "The Opposite" ups the tempo with a little more cumbia charm while "Continue The Fun" adds a dub mentality to the mix as we're chugged to oblivion with heads down introspection. Finally "Tuto Bay" closes somewhere on a Cuban beach with rum-warmed harmonies. Beautiful.
