Lady Lucy (7")
Cat: FNR 045. Rel: 02 Jul 14
  1. Lady Lucy
  2. Wicked
Review: This latest seven from Frank Raines Funk Night label is so hot there is steam rising off the wax! It sees funk troupe The Soul Surfers team up with vocalist Coko and we hope it's the first of several collaborations as there is a real studio chemistry on display here. There's a raw energy to Coko's vocal delivery that is reminiscent of Betty Davis and her vocals and the backing accompaniment sit perfectly on a killer groove arrangement from The Soul Surfers. The partnership shows a different side on the flip with "Wicked" a pensive Blues number that is fairly dominated by Coko's raspy singing.

  1. Soul Strut (2:43)
  2. Electrifying Woman (3:54)
Review: Two of Funk Night Records' most distinctive and innovative acts join forces for two outstanding pieces of psychedelic fiery funk fusion. Estonian duo Misha Panfilov Sound Combo set the bedrock on "Soul Strut". All fuzzy, unkempt and energetic, it sets the scene for Detroit's Coco Buttafli to lay her scorched heart on the line in an almost metal-like style. "Electrifying Woman" takes us even deeper into the psychedelic mindset as the groove is given a swampy, dizzying feeling while Coco spits spoken word with such a savage honesty you can't helped but get sucked into the story. Two of a kind.

  1. Once I've Been There (extended Promo version) (5:50)
  2. Captain Connors (unreleased extended mix) (7:23)
Review: Norman Connors was a 'go to' producer in the 1970s and '80s for soul and jazz, while holding it down on an impressive array of solo albums. Connors is a drummer first and foremost, and across his rhythm-focussed recordings were the introduction of singers who went on to have their own individual careers such as Jean Carn, Phyllis Hyman and the exceptional Phillip Mitchel - who features on A side 'Once I've Been There'. Flipside track 'Captain Connors' comes as a 12" mix made in 1977 but never released before on vinyl! Previously, the title track was only ever on a promotional release, often changing hands at over 100 quid a time - demand is high on this special release on the original imprint, cop it while you can!

Mother Of The Future (limited 10")
Cat: 10EXP 20141. Rel: 31 Mar 14
  1. Norman Connors - "Mother Of The Future"
  2. Bembe Segue - "Mother Of The Future" (live version)
Review: Serious jazz dance fusion from 1974, Norman Connors' cover of Carlos Garnett's "Mother Of The Future" drives with shamanistic fury before the firing keys, heaving horns and deep soul vocals fly into the mix. For a more contemporary jazz take, flip for Bembe Segue's emphatic live version. Lavished with her distinctively rich vocals and stern spoken word and complete with wild bass runs and a thick bed of percussion, it's an instant show-stopper. Two incredible covers, one special 10".

  1. Mind Made Up (feat Kylie Auldist)
  2. Losin' Streak (feat Daniel Merriweather)
Review: Two big cuts taken from the Melbourne trio's sixth album Blind Bet, here the band flip two sides of a ridiculously funky coin. "Mind Made Up" features the vocals of Tru Thoughts starlet Kylie Auldist. Her rich emphatic vocals fit the 70s soul licks perfectly. Smooth and dynamically delivered with big horns, subtle strings, major chords and an instantly catchy chorus, you'll make your mind up on this long before the last horns blast a final cheerio. "Skeletor", meanwhile, is a much more party-focussed jam where big breakbeats provide the back bone for sharp horns, heavy Hammond slapping and warm gravelly vocals.

  1. Real Life Baby (feat Emmi) (3:24)
  2. Enter Sandman (3:20)
Review: From the kitchen to the laboratory, longstanding Aussie groove troupe Cookin' On 3 Burners don the hazmats for their fourth album Lab Experiments and these are just two of the flaming funk potions from their findings. "Real Life Baby" is a slinky pop-tinged new soul affair with swooning spaces for Emmi to flex her distinctive vocals and show us exactly what her kinda swag is. Meanwhile on the B, "Enter Sandman" is exactly what you think it is... A full-throttle trip to never never land with every dramatic organ slapping you could ever dream of. Enter night!

  2. Nightime On The Beach (3:46)
Review: Dreamy mid '70s funk from Caribbean (St Maarten to be precise) trio Cool Creations: "Wish Upon Love" struts with a Boz Scaggs-style confidence and a deep, cloudy finish that would make Faze-O proud. Flip for a straight-up cloud burst as "Night On Beach Island" lives up to its name with measured pace, cosmic trumpets, sandy pianos and lavish, lolloping wave-lapping double bass. Beautiful.

Cat: FG 004. Rel: 18 Oct 18
  1. People Let's Communicate (part 1) (3:44)
  2. People Let's Communicate (part 2) (3:03)
Review: While officially pressed in 1976, Washington DC's funk troupe Coque never actually publicly distributed their socially conscious epic psych funk rock romp "People Let's Communicate". Most copies were damaged in a flood but a limited amount escape and were excavated 10 years ago. Now available for the first time, both sides can be digested in all their fusion and positive glory. Part one slides and glides with a little Sly Stone style smooth funk while part two gets a little crunchier. It's time to talk.

Bra (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: MRB 7143. Rel: 01 Aug 18
  1. Bra (5:06)
  2. The Message (4:14)
Review: Mr Bongo recently served up a tasty 7" single featuring two of Cymande's best-loved tracks, "Fug" and "Brothers on the Slide". Here they repeat the trick, slapping the two most-played tracks from the British band's incredible 1972 debut album, Cymande, on one "45". The A-side boasts "Bra", a killer chunk of funk/soul/reggae fusion with one of the most recognizable grooves around. Hip-hop heads will know it inside out, since DJs have been doubling up with copies of "Bra" since the mid 1970s. On the flip you'll find "The Message", a sublime, slightly more spaced out reggae-funk workout rich in snaking sax lines, memorable vocals and a groove so distinctive it couldn't come from any other band.

Fug (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: MRB 7144. Rel: 01 Aug 18
  1. Fug (4:26)
  2. Brothers On The Slide (4:10)
Review: In the early '70s, Cymande made a trio of killer albums that remain stone cold classics to this day. For this reissue 7", Mr Bongo has dipped into two of those albums - 1973's Second Time Around and 74's Promised Heights - and dug out two of the best-loved, most-sampled cuts. On the A you'll find "Fug", a low-slung, bassline-driven party full of killer drum breaks, righteous horn solos and, and conscious lyrics that call for global action against inequality (little, it seems, has changed politically since). It's one of those you should really own, as is the ever more familiar flipside "Brothers On The Slide", which boasts one of the most recognizable grooves in the history of dance music.

Darling You Do (limited 7")
Cat: FG 005. Rel: 19 Feb 18
  1. Darling You Do (2:46)
  2. Suddenly (3:55)
Review: Cytations, a band from Washington DC, were a brief flicker of light in the ever-expanding soul scene that took over the late 1960s. In fact, they were arguably the norm in terms of fame; much like the other bands at the time, they only produced a handful of songs before disbanding and joining other outfits - but that is the sort of stuff which dreams are made of! Their one-hit wonder - "Darling You Do" / "Suddenly" - was out in 1969 on the utterly fledgling Granjun imprint, and its rarity has been masterfully repacked by the US' Federal Green label. The former is a classic soul swinger to strut along to, leaving a seductive hum of vocals and melodies in your mind for the rest of the day, while the flip is a much deeper, more heartfelt soul ballad that is like Romeo to our Juliet. Blissful.

  2. Tao (5:34)
Review: New kids on the reissue block, New Zealand's Strangelove Music are off to a flying start with this beautiful 1983 art pop record from subversive chanteuse Lena D'Agua. "Jardim Zoologico" fuses electro boogie with Afrofunk with healthy measures of cosmic polish while "Tao" is a straight up Balearic gem that sparkles with sentiment and horizontal soul. Only ever released on Portuguese label Valentim De Carvalho, this reissue is over 30 years overdue.

  4. Special Dimensions (8:26)
Review: Following co-labs with DJ Spinna and Ekkah on previous Glydezone outings, Dam Funk takes to his own label controls solo for the first time with this piquant trio of loose limbed future funk tales. "Electric Breeze" sets the scene perfectly with subtly sleazy electroboogie flavours, "Nyghtryder" spaces the beats out a little more for added cosmicity while "She Lights Me Up" is all about the big double clap gusto and life affirming chords. Hot dam!

  1. Listen To The Music
  2. Dizzy With Love
Review: Originally presented to Nigerian dancefloors in 1981 by Phonodisk, Cameroonian crooner Bayo Damazio's emphatic vocals are carried with class as the Mighty Flames provide the slick, spaced out disco grooves. The title track wriggles and shakes with Chic style tightness while Bayo's vocal command isn't dissimilar to that of Roy Ayers. "Dizzy With Love", meanwhile, is much more traditional 70s disco in its make-up with a bigger, more obvious groove, perky horn blasts and infectious falsetto vocals. Do as the title says and listen... Music like this speaks for itself.

Review: Darondo is back, and the amazing story of a once-disappeared Bay Area soul man continues to unfold. More tapes of unreleased material have been discovered, hidden in an attic for 30+ years! Now available for the first time anywhere. On this new vinyl EP we present 5 tracks, four of which have never been released. Starting out with a nice n loud cut of "Legs" for the funk DJs, also featured is the previously unreleased instrumental version. On the flip "Such a Night" sees Darondo in ballad mode with a nod to Roy Ayers or Ramp. "My Momma & My Poppa" is the original version that Darondo recorded prior to the version on "Let My People Go," and the EP is rounded out with a blues driven song called "Packin' Up".

  2. Som Tres - "Tanga" (2:03)
Review: Wilson das Neves was is a legendary Brazilian percussionist most well known for being part of Os Ipanemas.

His cover of Average White Band's 'Pick Up The Pieces' recorded with his 'conjunto' ensemble, takes the track into funky samba territory, laden with percussion and horns.

Originally released on his 'Wilson Das Neves E Conjunto - O Som Quente E O Das Neves LP in 1976. Previously unreleased on 7".

Som Tres - Tanga
A Mr Bongo all-time Brazilian Funk favourite. Tearing drums, vocals and piano packed into just over 2 minutes. Killer.

Som Tres were a trio formed by prolific pianist, arranger and producer Cesar Camargo Mariano. Originally appeared on the 'Um E Pouco, Dois E Bom, Este Som Tres E Demais' LP on Odeon Brazil in 1971. Previously unreleased on 7".

Review: The hard-touring, heavy-funking, Craig Charles-endorsed Cornish six piece Daytona tease us for their album with this cheeky double-A 45". "Needed You" is a straight up northern soul thumper with relentlessly driving beat, gutsy vocals, big piano rolls and crucial flutes while "Sicka" takes us right back to the sixties with a fiery ode to a greenback classic. Sweaty, forthright and tighter than a nun's purse, bring on the album already!

  3. Fuzz Oriental Blues (6:47)
Review: A serious RSD reissue here as Music On Vinyl reanimate the cult afro-funk's one and only 45" on Pye sub-label Dawn. Emphatic, layered, energetic and dizzying - just like their albums Afreaka and Roots & Offshoots - each cut is bewilderingly funky and soulful experience. The lead track is one of the best Screamin' Jay Hawkins covers ever pressed to wax, "Message To Mankind" tips a nod to the Tamla school of thought with a belting yearn for better times while "Fuzs Oriental Blues" is just a straight up savage blues jam with some firing Afro twists towards the finale. Stone cold; this one won't hang around for long.

Review: The spirit of Zapp lives on in Bay Area maverick Diamond Ortiz as he follows up his Street Funk edition with his first original 45 this year. Both loaded with that crucial Cali vibe, juicy synth bass and sleazy talkbox fronting, "Poster Girl" is the real street stalker that's loaded with such a tightly coiled swagger it wobbles. "In The Cut Like Whaat" turns down the tempo to turn the heat. Powerful, emotional and timeless. Shine on.

Review: The Difusion crew turned some heads last year with the low-key release of their first grip of cult edits, and now they're back with a second installment that keeps the source material obscure, the treatment respectful and the vibes pure and positive. "Someday" is a killer simmering slice of disco funk, while "On The Scene" slows things down and turns up the 70s bombast with Philly strings and brass blasts aplenty. "Freaksta" takes things in a more cosmic direction, while "Right Now" aims right for Studio 54 indebted flamboyance, all stirring diva vocals and bold production to get everyone freaking the right way.

Review: Ultra Vybe remain deep in their Brunswick excavations with these two sublime cuts from the label's super troupe of session players Directions and their one and only album. Released 1976, OG copies fetch almost L200 and just these two tracks alone hint at why. Shimmering with a strong Faze-O feel with an evocative contrast of falsetto and deep baritone and twinkling instrumentation, both tracks swoon with everything that was so smooth and emotional about the label who gave the world Jackie Wilson, The Chi-Lites and Gene Chandler. Show some love.
