  1. The Time Is Right (3:23)
  2. Feeling Funky (3:55)
Review: If this fine 7" is anything to go by, the crate digging and detective skills of Athens of the North founder Euan Fryer are as sharp as ever. The two tracks featured here originally appeared on a private press single that currently changes hands for large sums online. Fryer manager to track down the original writer/producer, Chicago-based George Riviera, who not only have his blessing to the reissue, but also sent over the master tapes. Stylistically, A-side "The Time is Right" sits somewhere between Latin soul, jazz-funk and sumptuous downtempo disco, with blue-eyed soul vocals and subtle vibraphone solos rising above superb had percussion. Fipside "Feelin' Funky" is a more up-tempo affair: an undulating chunk of jazz-funk/disco fusion laden with neat musical touches.

  1. Mam Yinne Wa (3:58)
  2. Yu Ya Yumma (3:24)
Review: Frafra gospel artist Alogte Oho was rumoured to be a leading artist within the 'explosive' music scene of Bolgatanga, in Northern Ghana. His debut release "Zota Yinne" in 2014 has already become a collectors item. On this release, Oho is joined by the all female choir group Sounds of Joy, comprised of Lizzy Amaliyenga, Patricia Adongo and Florence Adooni. On the A side, we have the uplifting and soulful vibes of "Mam Yinne Wa" featuring some wonderful wind and string instrument passages. On the flip is the reggae influenced swagger of "Yu Ya Yumma".

Blow Your Mind (7" + sticker)
Cat: TSRZV 01. Rel: 01 May 18
  1. Blow Your Mind (3:56)
  2. Virgin Lion (3:27)
Review: Ivan Makvel and Olli join forces for the first time, laying down two suitably sizzling slammers on a dinky seven-inch single. A-side "Blow Your Mind", a talkbox-sporting P-funk jam that reminded us of early '80s era Roger Troutman releases - all stabbing, kaleidoscopic synth motifs, colourful solos, punchy machine drums and lyrics celebrating "funk" - is particularly special, sounding as it does like a genuine relic of a bygone era. Almost as good is flipside P-funk instrumental "Virgin Lion", which sounds a little like an instrumental revision of the A-side with added flash-funk guitars and D-Train style synth doodles.

  1. So High (5:01)
  2. Inner Rhythms (6:49)
  3. Odoru (5:41)
  4. Momoshima (6:13)
Review: Late last year, French imprint Chuwanag launched via a fine compilation exploring the early '80s Britfunk sound (think jazz-funk and electrofunk) in impressive detail. You'll find numerous aural nods to that style on this follow-up, a fine debut single from producer Koji Ono. Check, for example, the sparkling synthesizers, hustling guitars and house-tempo jazz-funk grooves of "So High", the wiggly Clavinet lines, whistling melodies and rubbery bass of "Inner Rhythms" and the luscious, misty-eyed warmth of ear-pleasing mid-tempo instrumental jam "Momoshima". All are exquisite examples of revivalist cuts that boast more than enough freshness and impeccable instrumentation to bear comparison to the records that inspired them.

Don't Stop (limited 7")
Cat: CLMN 126. Rel: 25 Jul 14
  1. Don't Stop
  2. Powerfeed (instrumental)
Review: California funk troupe Orgone really need no prior introduction and it's great to see the group line up for a release here on the Colemine Records label. Initially released on clear vinyl in limited numbers earlier in 2014 whilst label boss Terry Cole was on tour, Don't Stop has now been pressed in a larger quantity for all the budding funk selectors out there and shows two distinct sides to the Orgone sound. The title track is all about the power house vocal performance from Tiffany Austin and how Orgone "make it easy" for her to ride the groove. Flip over and "Powerfeed" is Orgone laying down a heaving slab of heavy instrumental funk.

  1. Strike (3:57)
  2. New You (3:25)
Review: As if their recent album Beyond The Sun wasn't quite enough new material this year, Orgone return with two more brand new jams on this 7" for Colemine. "Strike" is a firing, sweaty Union cover that's focused on nothing but an unashamed party. "New You" is a softer, more sensual boogie number that oozes soaking wet guitar licks and honey-coated vocals throughout. Powerful contemporary funk from one of the most successful and prolific troupes in existence.

  1. Big Day (3:24)
  2. Hound Dogs (3:30)
Review: We've barely recovered from the funk blitz of last year's Undercover Mixtape album and along comes this brand new 45 from long-standing LA funk troupe. As always, the focus is on big immersive grooves with just the right balance of sleaze and looseness; "Big Day" slouches back and swampy blues arrangement with the massive backing vocals giving an almost gospel-style energy. "Hound Dogs" is more of an upbeat funk jam, loaded with snaking percussive weaves, vital horns and a positive message. Spread the good word.

Cat: CLMN 134C. Rel: 14 Jun 18
  1. Do What You Came To Do (4:45)
  2. Ronin (instrumental) (3:07)
Review: LA's Orgone crew are specialists in smooth, seductive soul music, and you could say that the band is waving the flag very high in the air for the continuation and health of the genre. It was their original material on Ubiquity back in the early 2000's that gave them their fame, but these two new nuggets on Colemine are pretty on-point in terms of dancefloor destruction: "Do What You Came Here To Do" is a rough and twisted sex bomb that sounds like it was made in '76 - a tune that would make a great addition to a Quentin Tarantino flick - and the "Ronin" instrumental is simply a great, devastating piece of instrumentation for you to get DOWN to.

  1. Cumbia Volcadora (3:29)
  2. Caramelos (4:15)
Review: Since most probably missed Orkestra Mendoza's 2016 album Vamos A Guarachar - a CD-only romp through floor-friendly Cumbia and Mambo pastures - Boogieburg has decided to issue two of the collection's best tracks on wax. On the A-side you'll find "Cumbia Volcadora", a fuzz-fuelled romp rich in jaunty accordion lines, psychedelic rock style production effects, gentle but heavyweight rhythms and spiraling horn motifs. The band's psychedelic rock influence is even more pronounced on "Caramelos", a kind of Santana style take on Cumbia that also owes some debt to late '60s boogaloo. We guarantee that the chant-along chorus and wild Hammond organ solos will drill their way into your consciousness within 30-seconds pressing play on the sound clip above.

  3. Gunesi Kesin (4:14)
Review: We're not sure who's behind these extended Turkish funk and psychedelic pieces but we're glad they've come into our lives. Heavily dubbed and spaced out, each cut casts a heady spell; "Aycicegi" is a low-riding, loose-stringed sleazy funk slice, "Biz Burdayiz" is a nodding cosmic slop of chugging beats, strange acid melts and breathy voice clips while "Gunesi Kesin" closes the show on the slinkiest walking bassline imaginable. Looking forward to the second volume....

  1. La Vem Salgueiro
  2. Tenha Fe, Pois Amanha Um Lindo Dia Vai Nascer
Review: Samba flavours do not come more authentic than this. The sixth in Mr Bongo's Brazil 45 series, here they unearth two foundation pieces from Rio collective Os Origianais Do Samba. Forming in 60s Rio, they're still highly active today and have a discography peppered with Brazilian gold. This 45 does well to showcase their breadth... "La Vem Salgueiro" is quintessential samba. Heavy rhythm, punctuated vocals and a dynamic that leaps from bold and delicate in a flash, it charms you instantly. "Tenha Fe" has a softer soul as it strums and sways and more of a folky sensation, tight harmonies and alluring naked instrumentation.

  1. Breaking At The Party (6:27)
  2. Breaking At The Party (instrumental) (6:26)
Review: You'd be forgiven for not knowing "Breaking At The Party", the sole single release from NYC outfit Joey Pastrana & His Back of Tricks. It was originally released in 1984 on the short lived Tropic Of Buddha Records, a label dedicated to Latino takes on electro and disco. Such is the record's obscurity and cult status amongst collectors that you'll struggle to find original copies for sale for less than L500. This City of Dreams reissue presents both of the original mixes ("Vocal" and dub style "Instrumental"), both of which fuse elements of boogie, electro and dub disco in a fabulously eccentric and wonderfully funky way. The synthesizer sounds, in particular, are superb.

  1. Bouncy Lady (edit) (4:16)
  2. Why Cant People Be Colors Too (edit) (4:31)
Review: BlackCash & Theo are back in this great series of funk, soul and party edits. Pleasure's "Bouncy Lady" was produced by jazz legend Wayne Henderson of The Crusaders. The intro break has been extended, and is said to be one of the all time classic hip hop funk breaks. Elements of this track were sampled on "Brand New Funk" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, "Word to the Mother (Land)" by Big Daddy Kane, and "Church" by De La Soul. On the flip, Whatnauts' "Why Can't People Be Colors Too" is an R&B jam with another heavy break, as sampled by Q-Tip, Pete Rock, Diamond D, Dilla, and "Oh My God" by A Tribe Called Quest featuring Busta Rhymes.

Review: Chalalala move on. Outta Sight continue their two sides / two legends Atlantic 45 series with this beautiful celebration of The Pointer Sisters and The Drifters. Neither act require an introduction. The famous Oakland all-girl troupe take the lead with "Send Him Back", their sophomore single (that regularly fetches upwards of L100 a copy) it's a bubblegum soul frenzy with all the energy you'd expect from their breakthrough years. The Drifters carries a similar sense of focus and energy with vibrant backing vocals and a sunny side soul touch that will have you bouncing from here to next winter.

  1. Pooky & Good Life - "Faith Like This" (4:23)
  2. Good Life - "Just Buggin' Out" (4:27)
Review: Waxnerds' latest sizzling seven-inch brings together label regular Pooky and the previously unheard Good Life. In typical Waxnerds fashion, A-side "Faith Like This" sees the duo play around with a classic Faith Evans vocal above a lolloping, sample-rich backing track of their own creation. As you'd expect, there's plenty of nods towards familiar funk and soul favourites, as well as a killer, head-nodding beat. Good Life goes solo on the flip, laying down a scorching slab of cut-up hip-hop funk of the type that's guaranteed to get the party rocking every time it is dropped.

  2. My Sense Of Direction (Is Blown) (2:39)
Review: This Precisions (Philly Group) were a different group to the Detroit Precisions. These two tracks come from when they were working with Philadelphia producer Marty Bryant. We can imagine that some Northern Soul DJs tracked down copies of the scarce original pressing of this fine 7" for B-side "My Sense of Direction (Is Blown)", a heartfelt soul shuffler with serious dancefloor chops. Arguably even better, though, is A-side "Take a Closer Look", a slower, simmering chunk of doo-wop influenced goodness that's as heartbreaking as it is sublime.

Review: The latest dig from Best Record Italy's eternal mission to release the finest Roman musical manna features noted jazz man Pino Presti taking on Manu Dibango's eternal party jam "Soul Makossa". Presti's interpretation uses oodles of gleaming 80s synths in place of the original traditional instrumentation, but fear not as the iconic brass section remains a real-world force, and sounds mighty fresh with it. Following up that cover is a sumptuous version of "Ain't No Sunshine" which is aimed square at the heartstrings of the most Balearic cruisers. "I Call Your Name / Come Back To Me" gets even smoother, the vocals capturing Mediterranean getaway romance to perfection.

  1. What's That? (2:29)
  2. Punched On The Train (2:45)
Review: Some people love Willie Nelson, others prefer a half nelson. Now make way for Primo Nelson, a contemporary funk act from Southend On Sea weighing in at a cool 13 players. With such a strong squad it should come as no surprise that they punch hard: vocalist Dave Ambrose croons with real Lambert & Butler style croakiness while the band remains tighter than a bee's bundies, thumping at rapid tempo. "What's That?" nods to "Living In America" era James Brown with big Q&A dynamics between the vocals and horns while "Punched On The Train" is a sharper, pub-funk stomper with stern messages of anti-violence.
