Evil Vibrations Collection (double 7") (1 per customer)
Cat: DYNAM 7004/DYNAM 7005. Rel: 16 Feb 18
  1. Evil Vibrations (3:47)
  2. The Mighty Ryeders (3:20)
  3. Lovely (3:51)
  4. Everybody Groove (3:28)
Review: 40 years has passed since the release of the Mighty Ryeders' one and only album, Help Us Spread The Message. To celebrate this fact, Dynamite Cuts has decided to release four of the album's most sort-after cuts on one 7" double-pack. Fittingly, it begins with the band's best-known track, the peerless "Evil Vibrations" (as famously sampled by De La Soul) before moving onto the bouncy Blaxploitation soul of "The Mighty Ryeders". The band's ability to musically shape-shift is explored further on the second seven-inch, where the glassy-eyed jazz-funk/soul fusion of "Lovely" is backed by the disco-era conscious funk brilliance of "Everybody Groove (No Woman Interruption).

  1. Let's Get It Together (6:12)
  2. Let's Get It Together (dub) (6:20)
Review: Trinidadian legend Winston Bailey aka Shadow has been on our charts a lot over the last year or so, with his infamous 1984 LP Sweet Sweet Dreams being reissued left, right and centre, and it's no surprise given the fact that the killer "Let's Get It Together" features all up in that. What a timeless gem. So much so that Germany's Black Pearl has decided to put it onto 7" format, along with a majestic dub cut that we hadn't heard before...and that means more beastly synths, machine-drum badness, and Shadow's iconic vocals.

  2. Zumo De Pina (3:07)
Review: Madrid four-piece come correct with another sweet and sweaty 45". "Escuela De Calor" does well to share the spotlight between the incredible talent of the pressure cooker horns and arsonist organs that fire up feelings you didn't even know you had. "Zumo De Pina" struts with bigger jazzy flourishes as the sax grabs full lead, taking us to places we didn't even know existed. Precision-timed for summer fun.

Marathon (7")
Cat: FNR 104. Rel: 15 Aug 18
  1. Marathon (3:31)
  2. Who's In Love (2:08)
Review: Multi-instrumentalist Misha Paniflov reignites his "Sound Combo" (a collaborative project with flautist friend Ilja Gussarov) for the fourth time in 2018. As per usual, the Estonian duo offer up two on point cuts on one desirable seven-inch single. A-side "Marathon" is particularly good: a bustling, lo-fi Afro-funk gem rich in Tony Allen style drums, fluorescent flute flourishes, trippy electronics and rasping horns that's as heavy and intoxicating as they come. There's a jaunty dancefloor jazz-meets-'60s dream pop feel to flipside "Who's In Love", which sounds a little like something the Beatles and Harry Nilsson would come up with after heading down to a jazz club while tripping on acid.

  1. I Feel Free (2:26)
  2. Growler (2:43)
Review: With their first 45 selling out in under one week, Bristol troupe Mohawkestra are doing all the right things in all the right places. Especially our ears. Now loading up their second funk 45 bullet, it's likely to be just as successful... Big Hammond-led funk all the way, "I Feel Free" has the frenzy of The Meters but the fire of the Mohawkes while "Growler" does anything but growl - swinging with a fizzy lead line and heavy string strums, there's a train-like momentum that refuses to quit until the very last break. Heavenly.

Review: Tamrat Kebede's Mombasa Roots is a project with a timeless edge and an inimitable Afro-roots vibe that is simply irreplaceable and downright irrefutable by any sort of music lover. Whether you are or are not into this delightful blend of tropical disco, tunes like "Karibishe" and "Mezea Tu" are almost impossible not to dance to, or at least appreciate. "Kasha Langu" is more appropriate to the true lovers of Afrobeat, thanks to its slow, seductive sway, while "What Is It That You Want" unleashes some fiery disco-boogie, and "My Everything" showers the room with yet more disco glitter, the sexiest of sorts.

  2. Mama Matotoya (3:32)
Review: Destination Mombasa Reef Hotel, 1970s. The prestigious resort had a fittingly unique in-house band in the form of The Mombasa Vikings. Casting afrofunk and benga spells with raw energy, they were invited to Switzerland to record their only album African Songs, home to both of these stunning sun-kissed fusions. "Kibe Kibe" is a powerful bluesy jam with full effort from the horns and backing vocals. Meanwhile on the B "Mama Matotoya" gets heavy on the hammond with exultant results. Fully licenced from all original Viking members, Afro7 have smashed this one out of the park. Kibe up!

  4. Max Ransay - "Ti Kanno" (Sol Power All-Stars edit) (5:18)
Review: Sol Power Sound's latest must-have 12" serves of some obscure 1980s zouk and Beguine flavours from the French Caribbean territory of Martinique. Side A is dedicated to the wonderfully percussive but surprisingly sparse (think drums, fretless bass, synths and vocals) sunshine dance that is "Lizo" by Eugene Mona. The fine original version is accompanied by a fresh take from Kiko Navarro, who subtly combines all of Mona and company's original elements with a jaunty Caribbean house rhythm. Turn to the flipside for the tropical disco-era Beguine brilliance of Max Ransay's "Ti Kanno" - think dense tropical drums, disco horns, celebratory chorus vocals and meandering synthesizer lines - and a suitably beefed up contemporary tweak from the Sol Power All-Stars.

Review: The emergent trend of tapes issued by Vancouver label 1080p subsequently being licensed for a vinyl edition continues with Moon B's sublime Lifeworld album picked up for release by Hamburg operation Growing Bag Records. The label has form in this regard, previously granting the A.r.t. Wilson tape Overworld by Andras Fox a hugely popular vinyl edition and they've chosen wisely in securing this gem from the Moon B discography. Wedged somewhere between an album and a mixtape, Lifeworld was a kaleidoscopic journey into the LA-based artist's influences and this LP version is made all the more enticing by the presence of previously unreleased Moon B jammer "Moments in Slank".

Now they delve into much needed re-issues with Toque De Cuica which features two obscure gems, for the heads. First up the legendary Brazilian jazz drummer Airto Moreira serves up the feelgood disco vibes of "Toque De Cuica", while on the flip there's Erlon Chaves E Sua Banda Venemo with the sultry Latin soul-funk of "Cosa Nostra" coming off like a South American James Brown and band: you've got to hear this.

Even if you don't know it by name, Moreira's "Celebration Suite" should be instantly familiar, a jazz-fusion/samba batucada anthem that truly lives up its joyous name!! Review: The latest 7" missive from the Outta Sight camp features two more impossible-to-find rarities. On the A-side you'll find a storming chunk of horn-heavy, Hammond-rich funk from obscure US psychedelic band Mr Floods Party. Originally released on GM Records in 1971, the cut has long been an in-demand amongst Northern Soul collectors thanks to its stomping beat and impassioned vocals. Speaking of Northern Soul favourites, flip to the B-side for the greatest moment from short-lived Detroit soul group Fork In The Road. Originally released in 1970, "Can't Turn Around Now" is a thrillingly energetic workout full of heavy instrumentation, surging vocals and an even heavier backbeat.

  2. Afro Train - "Tumba Safari" (Nik's Exclusive Mukatsuku re-edit) (3:28)
Review: This tasty 7" from the reliable Mukatsuku label sees 2 killer funk treats for the dancefloor. On the A-side there's a handy and exclusive re-edit of Bahamian combo Biosis Now's ludicrously rare "Independent Bahamas", a righteous call for self-governance backed with a wonderfully fuzzy and full-throttle tropical funk groove. A copy recently for $700 on ebay for the very first time of the original 45. On the flipside we find "Tumba Safari" taken from the recent Oriki compilation, a suitably heavy chunk of Ivory Coast afro-funk from long forgotten outfit Afro Train. Weston's version naturally emphasizes the drum breaks, heavy horns and razor-sharp guitars, in the process tightening it up for contemporary club play.As played by Hunee,Red Greg ,DJ Logic and Nicola Conte

There were two versions of the album Happiness in 1980 on the IFE independent label. 2. Feeling Funky (3:55)
Review: If this fine 7" is anything to go by, the crate digging and detective skills of Athens of the North founder Euan Fryer are as sharp as ever. The two tracks featured here originally appeared on a private press single that currently changes hands for large sums online. Fryer manager to track down the original writer/producer, Chicago-based George Riviera, who not only have his blessing to the reissue, but also sent over the master tapes. Stylistically, A-side "The Time is Right" sits somewhere between Latin soul, jazz-funk and sumptuous downtempo disco, with blue-eyed soul vocals and subtle vibraphone solos rising above superb had percussion. Fipside "Feelin' Funky" is a more up-tempo affair: an undulating chunk of jazz-funk/disco fusion laden with neat musical touches.

Review: Late last year, French imprint Chuwanag launched via a fine compilation exploring the early '80s Britfunk sound (think jazz-funk and electrofunk) in impressive detail. You'll find numerous aural nods to that style on this follow-up, a fine debut single from producer Koji Ono. Check, for example, the sparkling synthesizers, hustling guitars and house-tempo jazz-funk grooves of "So High", the wiggly Clavinet lines, whistling melodies and rubbery bass of "Inner Rhythms" and the luscious, misty-eyed warmth of ear-pleasing mid-tempo instrumental jam "Momoshima". All are exquisite examples of revivalist cuts that boast more than enough freshness and impeccable instrumentation to bear comparison to the records that inspired them.
