Review: Having spent much of the last decade fiddling around with Teutonic techno and quite clinical ambient sounds, Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann have decided to go back to their roots with an album created in the same collaborative way as early classics Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld and U.F.Orb. For those raised on these early 90s gems, this is an enticing proposition (particularly since old mucker Youth features prominently throughout). There are far more vocal cuts than you might expect, but also plenty of sample-heavy workouts that effortlessly join the dots between dub, hip-hop and ambient. When all involved truly hit the mark - as on "Other Blue Worlds", a kind of sequel to "Blue Room" featuring Jah Wobble - No Sounds Out of Bounds really flies.

  3. Chat Three (4:57)
  4. Chat Four (8:34)
Review: The West Mineral imprint is shaping up to be one of the hottest prospects in experimental music this year, with the label dropping three killer records to crown their debut. The latest comes from Pontiac Streator and Ulla Straus, two young artists who have begun to collaborate magnificently, delving into the deeper, more intricate side of percussion, bass, and improvisation. Chat is truly killer throughout, weaving away amid sporadic drums and a washed out bass, often sounding much like the constructions of a dub tune, and there are four parts to it. Part 1 rolls its drums out hither and dither, alongside a flurry of dread bass, whereas Part 2 is much more freeform in aesthetic, its drums bouncing with the help of delay and echo. "Chat Three" teases the crowds with a subtle infusion of something reminiscent of techno, and "Chat 4" ties things off with a cinematic drum roll that confirms just how serious this duo is. Recommended.

Review: Veteran electronic experimentalist, producer and sound engineer Colin Potter began his career at the turn of the '80s, self-releasing cassettes on the ICR label. 'The Where House?', which here gets the Dark Entries reissue treatment, was one of his earliest releases, originally slipping out - unheralded, of course - in 1981. This first ever vinyl edition includes all 13 tracks from the original cassette release - think far-sighted proto-acid, bubbly electronic soundscapes, curiously strange ambient, backwards tape experiments and instrumental minimal wave throb-jobs - plus a quartet of hard-to-find contemporaneous productions that previously featured on various mid '80s tape releases. Like the original album tracks, they're deliciously out-there and thrillingly ahead of their time.

Review: It was only a matter of time before the enigmatic Rezzett duo dropped an LP on Will Bankhead's TTT, and the time feels just right. At a time when electro, EBM and post-everything seems to be trending, the duo's organic style and ethereal melodies make a whole lot of sense, and give meaning to a new generation of listeners fascinated by future dystopia and the more melancholic side of dance music. The self-titled LP is a perfect encapsulation of everything they have released thus far, a blend of aqueous techno and ambient house that goes way, way beyond the dancefloor. The mood, the vibe, and the sounds are sticky, tainting the air with their singular distortion aesthetic that renders them personal to these two masked producers. The thing we love most, however, is their willingness to represent the UK hardcore continuum, offering two final cuts that push the d&b framework to its very limits. Highly recommended.

Review: As this expansive reissue proves, Max Richter's 2004 album The Blue Notebooks remains one of the greatest neo-classical works of recent decades. The album was famously inspired by the 2003 US invasion of Iraq and featured narration from actress Tilda Swinton. Such was the record's impact, in fact, that numerous pieces subsequently appeared on a variety of high profile movie soundtracks. To celebrate the work's 15th birthday, Richter has bundled the album with a second disc of largely unheard material. This includes a couple of intriguing remixes by Jlin and Konx-Om-Pax, two archive tracks produced during the album sessions, and a handful of new recordings of key instrumentals. These are all excellent, of course, but still pale in comparison to the inspired original album.

Review: Swedish ambient electronic composer Magnus Birgersson aka Solar Fields has released over a dozen albums. His new album Ourdom is inspired by South African landscapes, recorded in a rather pastoral environment (a wooden house on a coastline) where he conceptualised this collection of charmingly vivid ambient soundscapes. In addition to creating his own original studio albums, Birgersson has also written video game scores, including for the Electronic Arts game Mirror's Edge.

Review: Niko Schabel and Tom Wieland make for a wonderful duo when it comes to explorative rock music. Between them, they have collaborated with legendary groups like Embryo, 7 Samurai and Les Gammas, but their objective as a duo is to explore the world in search of new and exciting rhythms. En Route To Thailand is their debut album under this alias, and its ten tracks must make it into the best of 2018 - and we're only in July. Slow-burning beats that hint at house music are wrapped around marvelous swarms of poly-rhythms and otherworldly sounds, some of them native to Thailand and others totally created in the minds of the two artists. It is indescribable music with the power to change styles and visions for artists beyond the 'kraut' space. Future house.

In typical fashion, Fulton hadn't let anyone know it was coming. As with some of his other projects, it's now available on physical formats via German titans Running Back. As with previous Syclops albums, it's wonderfully bonkers and hard to pigeonhole, with the Sheffield-based Chicagoan combining mind-altering electronics, skewed drums, riotous analogue grooves and cheery piano and synthesizer motifs in a variety of hugely impressive ways. There are naturally some suitably filthy club workouts present - check the intergalactic madness of "Sarah's E Is Back", the druggy, afro-tech romp that is "Spin Cycle" and the sub-heavy insanity of "Kelly Is On Her C" - alongside loved-up compositions and productions that indulge Fulton's less discussed often overlooked jazz influences.

Review: Belzeblu was the second album released by Portugese duo, Telectu. Jorge Lima Barreto and Vitor Rua are not cited often enough when the discussion turns to avant-garde electronics, but this wonderfully timed reissue from Portugal's Holuzam should help to shed more light on these two talented producers from the early 80s. Miles ahead of everyone else back then - most peeps were focused on a neo-romantic tip - their music arguably sounds more relevant today than it did back then, particularly for their characteristically off-kilter use of synths and aqueous sounds. As can be heard on the opening "Rotas/Opera/Tenet", the synths sprawl out and find a life of their own in the absence of beats, while "Arepo/Sator" is on some proto-house flex like the sounds of pioneers like Manuel Gottsching of Ash Ra Temple - a real beauty of a track that should not be overlooked. As a final dose of synths, "Belzeblu 0" toys with bleeps and what appear to be modular patterns sent into total chaos. We think this is excellent and, as such, comes heavily recommended.

Review: The dissociative electronic designs of incognito American producer Topdown Dialectic originated as a set of software strategies, rather than compositions in the traditional sense. The recordings are captures and edits of various nonlinear sound-systems, shifting conditions, and reactions to internal changes. Despite such a conceptual basis the music is hyper-sensory, evocative, and emotive, meshing the impossible sonic geometries of early UK warehouse bleeps and IDM stutters with the gritty spatial abstraction of Basic Channel to chart dynamic and diaphanous electronic topographies, at once decentralized, parallel, and environmental.

The eight identical-length tracks comprising this self-titled vinyl debut demonstrate the breadth of the Topdown sound world: shuddering, circuitous, textural, kinetic. Algorithmic arrhythmias phase and pulse and oscillate, chopped voice samples flutter within buffering static, peripheral melodic fragments glitch and glide in and out of time. It's an aesthetic both autonomous and expressive, impersonal and inscrutable, in keeping with artist's roots as a central operative in revered anonymous cassette collective, Aught. This is compelling, composite music, instigated as much as created, like obscure machinations occurring deep in the labyrinth of a server somewhere.
