Review: Heather Gabel and Seth Sher, long active members of Chicago's underground "DIY scene", first joined forces as Hide in 2014. Since then, they've released a smattering of cassettes and 12" singles that put their spin on "sample-based, post-industrial" experimentation. As Castration Anxiety proves, their trademark sound owes much to the pioneers of the industrial sound - you can hear elements of SPK's dense percussion, the madness of Test Department and the scattergun drum machine assault of 1980s Cabaret Voltaire - but retains its' own unique voice. This is as much to do with the duo's wide range of influences - think Nine Inch Nails, DJ Spooky style "illbient" and gritty post-punk pop - as Gabel's inspired vocals.

Review: Over the last few years, the team behind the Moog Sound Lab has encouraged a range of forward-thinking electronic musicians to come and jam on its obscure (and very rare) Modular 55 System prototype. The latest edition in the ongoing series of session recordings sees intergalactic Afro-futurist Hieroglyphic Being treat us to The Replicant Dream Sequence - an eight-part modular electronic treat that moves from drowsy, surprisingly colourful ambience ("Seq 1") and foreboding deep space soundscapes ("Seq 3"), to dreamy electronica ("Seq 4") and hypnotic EBM (standout "Seq 6", which also features his distinctive spoken vocals), via blistering techno ("Seq 8", "Seq 2"). Unlike many of his own releases, the sound is sparkling and crystal clear, allowing the quality of his compositions and arrangements to shine through.

  9. Recovery (4:57)
Review: Having taken time out to travel the world and experience new things (including psychedelic substances in California), John Hopkins planned to make Singularity, his ninth album, "a sonic ecosystem that starts and ends on the same note". He soon got frustrated by these limitations, so instead just laid down a fluid and hazy album that combines his usual luscious, ambient electronics with a variety of sparse, heavy and off-kilter rhythms. While undeniably laidback in parts, the album also boasts a number of foreboding techno workouts and uses a wider palette of instrumental sounds than we've come to expect (including some fine strings and his own intricate piano playing). The resultant set is rather impressive, all told, and while not quite a "sonic ecosystem", it's certainly an enjoyable journey.

Review: When it comes to crafting memorable electronica, Malka Spigel and sometime Wire member Colin Newman are old hands. The duo released their first album as Immersion way back in 1994. This fourth full-length follows on from 2016's critically acclaimed Analogue Creatures Living On An Island and shares some stylistic similarities. Like that set, Sleepless contains numerous nods to 1970s krautrock (particularly Tangerine Dream and Popol Vuh), alongside detectable looks in the direction of laidback ambient techno, shoegaze, tactile downtempo grooves, melodic Balearic moments and the kind of hybrid analogue/electronic soundscapes that defy easy categorization. Throughout, the duo push mood and melody to the fore; as a result, the album is deliciously soft-focus and dreamy, even at its' most full-throttle and up-tempo.

Review: Over the years, Jan Jelinek has been responsible for some fantastically inventive experimental records. His latest is a concept album inspired by a radio play he wrote for German radio, in which every collage-style track was crafted from an interview with a different public figure (these include Yoko Ono, Marcel Duchamp, John Cage and Lady Gaga). These vocal excerpts, which include non-verbal sounds as well as speech, were also used to control a synthesizer. While the nuts and bolts are pretty far-sighted and next level, the results are actually rather enjoyable and easy to listen to. For every dystopian, mind-altering cut-up track, there are four or five others that veer closer to left-of-centre ambient bliss. It's an intriguing and hugely entertaining collection, all told.

Review: It would be fair to say that this release is fairly significant. It showcases material recorded - but never released - by former Tangerine Dream and Iggy Pop drummer Klaus Kruger throughout the 1980s. Variously inspired by kosmiche, Berlin School ambient, the cyclical movements of avant-garde American minimalism, the polyrhythms of Africa and contemporaneous electronic music movements - think EBM and European new age electronica, for starters - Advanced Dance contains some startling and hugely enjoyable material. The album's genius lies primarily in Kruger's ability to not only balance acoustic and electronic instrumentation, but also experimental instincts and melodious intent. Remarkably, some of the material even sounds like modern modular techno. In other words, it's one album of previously unreleased material that you really need in your life.

Review: The latest one from Edinburgh's Firecracker is by Steven Legget, who over the years has recorded under the aliases Four Hands, Artwhore and Gamma; with releases on a variety of labels from Signals and even Claremont 56 eight years ago. Starting life as a performance in the Turkish Baths located in Newcastle upon Tyne's City Pool (one of the last remaining civil saunas in the country), this soon evolved into a stunning full-length album of ambient/neo-classical compositions. Pieces from the original performances were layered with field recordings collected on the islands of South Crete, and later accompanied by cello and electronics. All profits from the sales of this LP will be donated to the charity Waves for Water, which helps developing nations gain access to sanitised drinking water.

Review: Canadian label Seance Center (run by former Invisible City Editions co-founder Brandon Hocura) presents an album by acupressure expert and electronic composer Sam McClellan. Music of the Five Elements is 'a work of perfectly tuned healing music', by way of minimalism, American primitive guitar and psychedelia. On the album, McClellan provides voice, synthesizer, guitar, bowed bass, piano, effects and Chinese flute: all played by himself. Of the album, McClellan himself stated that the optimum effect of the album is achieved if each side of the recording is played through in its entirety, without interruption. Moreover, it should be used as a meditational or body work tool, rather than entertainment, and will increase in effect over time. However, overplaying or improper use may eventually diminish its designed effect. Re-mixed and mastered from the original master reels.

Review: Since the tail end of the 1980s, Jack Dangers has been working alongside a range of collaborators to deliver bombastic, redlined electronic music that defies easy categorization. While Meat Beat Manifesto releases were once all-out dancefloor assault, these days Dangers' material tends to be a little more considered and melodious, even if the love of industrial sounds and clanging percussion hits remains. Impossible Star, then, is an otherworldly mixture of creepy but sparkling IDM, razor-sharp industrial soundscapes, rhythmically dense drum machine workouts, skewed, bass-heavy pop, weird ambient, bustling electro and dirt-encrusted, breakbeat-driven shufflers that subtly doff a cap to his proto-big beat years.
