  5. Panic Bull (4:11)
Review: Having shot into the limelight in 2012 with a 12" on Hessle Audio followed up by an outing on Liberation Technologies, Bandshell has since been on covert operations largely centred around releasing his music himself via Bandcamp. Now he's extended that practice into the B.S.Hell label, providing a physical presence to his wayward experimentation on the fringes of bass music. It's a sound that naturally aligns with the likes of Batu and Laksa, but also defiantly makes its own statement as well. With five tracks of distinctive drum science and textural voodoo to indulge in, this is a welcome return to wax for a thrilling, self-motivated producer.

  6. Sentiment Oceanique (6:28)
Review: Brothers From Different Mothers stalwart Basses Terres is a producer to whom easy categorization cannot be applied. For example, on his 2016 debut, he rushed between a quartet of experimental techno, leftfield and electronica excursions, while 2017's "Counting Pulsations" cassette was a druggy trip rich in ambient, dub and "dungeon synth" flavours. So what's on offer here? More intoxicating, otherworldly concoctions, that's what. Highlights include the dark tropical ambient of "665 Moths", the dubbed-out post-dancehall weightiness of "Wilfred Doricent", the slipped and spacey electronica of "Deliae" and the fluid dreaminess of gently percussive closing cut "Sentiment Oceanique".

  6. Human Flesh - "Fourteenth Mirage" (4:14)
  7. I Scream - "Nothing To Do" (5:05)
  8. I Scream - "Take Your Headphones & Dance!" (2:42)
Review: A record entitled 'Insane 80s Tracks From The Insane Label' was never going to be boring. Talk about living up to the name, Insane Music means an experimental cassette label from Belgium, managed by Alain Neffe and founded in 1981. He makes music as I Scream, and to put that into wider context his two tracks on this vinyl excursion are harsh distortions with distant bumbling rhythms, and relentless rolls of acid warble and snares the likes of which techno would kill for. That's far from that, though. Pseudo Code present the most accessible stuff here, and that comes in the form of a twisted child of post punk and garage synth pop, veering from the wonderfully bouncy and danceable 'Waiting For Zorro', to the runaway anxiety of 'Jesus!'. Bene Gesserit goes for what David Lynch might do with disco and garage rock, while Human Flesh present a staggeringly effective cacophony of brass refrains.

Womankind's Beauty
Cat: HYPE 086. Rel: 21 Jul 20
  1. Womankind's Beauty (feat Tonina) (4:51)
  2. Take It Slo (3:23)
  3. Global Warning (3:28)
  4. Killed By Aids (4:05)
Review: Fans of the inimitable, beguiling and beautiful Coco Rosie should definitely take note of this lush and textured four track EP from New York-based, Moroccan artist and sometime Discwoman associate Bergsonist. Or at least the strange, stunning and titular opener, 'Womankind's Beauty', which is helped no end by the high pitched vocals of Tonina. A downtempo, or at least off-kilter joy, by comparison the remaining trio of tracks occupy more familiar territory to fans of the aforementioned DJ collective and label, and Hypercolour, the imprint carrying this release. 'Killed By Aids' is all staccato 140s set to a futuristic tapestry of sound, while 'Take It Slo', although significantly slower, revels in sledgehammer kicks lunging through a web of mind-mashing tech. 'Global Warming', meanwhile, brings the urgency level down, accentuating the space between synth hooks and throwing a stomach rumbling low end into the mix.

Review: After capturing the imagination of many late last year, bespoke cutter returns with 5 cuts of skeletal club futurism. Raw yet polished, experimental yet undeniably danceable, stripped bare yet brimming with funk, every sound on this meticulously crafted record hangs in its rightful place. An invigorating release - highly recommended.

Apatheia EP
Cat: TRSK 009. Rel: 04 Dec 19
  1. Eighteenhundred (15:51)
  2. Apatheia (6:52)
  3. East (7:53)
Review: German producer Bhed takes charge of the ninth EP on the vital Trusik label. His mastery of ambient, dub, techno depths and bass weight are all present and correct here, never more so than on the fantastic opener "Eighteenhundred". Taking up the whole of one side of wax, it is more than deserving of that indulgence as it slowly trips through floating pads, icy hi hats and supple rhythms that soothe the mind, body and soul. "Apatheia" is a more edgy track which is just as cavernous but has you looking over your shoulder, and closing cut "East" is a pure and dreamy dub beauty.

  7. Blood (Walton remix) (4:21)
Review: Big Hands, big heart, big ideas; Milan man now based in London Andrea Bonalumi blesses us with his biggest release to date on Beat Machine. Fractured, frazzled and fried in future innovation, we're blindsided by the offbeat bubbles on "Prequel" and shunted and stuttered by disco freakery on "More Than Love". Elsewhere the title track boils things down to a much sludgier, warped and weird shuffle, "Tensegrity" reimagines rave for a modern day jilted generation while "Kick Blood" kicks us down a twisted UKG rabbit hole. "Blood" concludes this extensive extended player both in its breakbeat original form and gun-toting instrumental grime take from Walton. Big.

  5. Sleikjo (4:25)
Review: Ever since Nina Kraviz launched her Trip label back in 2014, Bjarki has been the imprint's most prolific artist. The Icelandic producer's latest release is his eighth in total for the label, and follows a trio of albums and a quartet of 12" singles. It's an intriguing EP, all told, with Bjarki combining experimental-minded sounds, motifs and production techniques with bombastic, four-to-the-floor techno rhythms. The results are generally intense and impressive, with highlights including the surging, Surgeon-seque madness of "Hatann Satann", the insanely bass heavy and energy-packed "Oli Gumm 2-2", and the crackling, spaced-out creepiness of the metallic and otherworldly "Fork2-2".

Cat: 695808 9146. Rel: 04 Nov 19
  1. Fever Ray - "This Country Makes It Hard To Fuck" (Björk remix) (3:03)
  2. Bjork - "Features Creatures" (Fever Ray remix) (4:10)
  3. Bjork - "Features Creatures" (The Knife remix) (4:38)
Review: A fierce meeting of minds you may never have expected, but that makes total sense - the mighty Bjork crossing swords with Fever Ray in an exchange of remixes with blistering results. Iceland's foremost musical visionary is in full warrior mode as she tackles Fever Ray's "This Country Makes It Hard To Fuck", delivering a nightmarish techno jackhammer full of monolithic kicks and sheet metal scrapings. Then Bjork's "Features Creatures" gets two versions from Karin Dreijer - first the Fever Ray remix that pumps and locks in an otherworldly mechanism that wouldn't sound out of place on one of Bjork's Mark Bell-produced albums. Then comes a sprightly version from Dreijer's other project, The Knife, which bounds along at an urgent pace with a skippy rhythm section and plenty of hyphy synth vamps.

Review: With releases on a who's who list of labels that are pushing experimental, underground house and techno including L.I.E.S, Creme Organisation, Echovolt and Strange Life, William Burnett has been steadily putting out releases that have gained a lot of respect without having to shout too loud about it. So much so that as well as running his own stella WT Records label, William is now often cited as a producer's producer. Deep and full of dub aesthetics that encompasses a world of it's own, his music is not just driven by a need to keep the floor moving, but are also about taking your headspace somewhere else. Progressing things a stage further is the Black Deer project. Recently launched, but in gestation for some time, it's introspective slant, plus loose referencing to his upbringing in Texas, allows William more freedom for experimentation. The Last Tortuga is taken from the same sessions that yielded the Willie Burns The Overlord EP on Trilogy Tapes as well as Black Deer's Trail Of Tears EP on Rush Hour, this 6 track EP has been due on the label for sometime, but it's been worth the wait as his sound has developed and expanded to take in ambient, drone and krautrock and highlights his musicianship in a new light.

Review: After kicking things off with the killer "Mariachi Guadalajara" by Lewski, Or:la's Cead label returns with another emergent talent, Blu Terra. The Warsaw based producer comes on strong for this breakthrough release with the heavy slapping, sound design-enhanced electro of "Person Sans". Even if the opening track felt detailed, it's superseded by the barrage of information spilling out of crafty, distinctive acid monster "20,000". "Western/Eastern" spreads across the B-side in a nervous twitch of rave energy geared towards big dark spaces, perfect for that spine-tingling part of the night when the real world feels very far away indeed.

Review: As part of their on going series of special vinyl releases of radio broadcasts from days gone by, Warp this time turn to a special Peel Session put together by Boards Of Canada. Covering plenty of ground from the deep and chugging dream-techno of "Happy Cycling" to the archetypal IDM squiggles and kinetics of "XYZ" via the sort of brain cleansing alpine purity of ambient beauty "Olson". Opener "Aquarius" sounds almost balearic in comparison, with little guitar riffs, smeared chords and sampled vocals that bring to mind the finest post-rave work of Orbital.

Cat: LXMXK 03. Rel: 17 Nov 20
  1. Preach On Sunday (8:27)
  2. Can I Get Ahhm (7:15)
Review: Run by Swiss house maestro Alex Storrer, the Lexx Music imprint returns with Nikita Elmer aka Bocab: a trumpeter and producer whose previous work was more centered around hip-hop styles, but here moves into purist deep house in impressive fashion. The sombre yet soulful (and dusty!) Detroit vibe of 'Preach On Sunday' will no doubt bear comparisons to the Three Chairs sound, but it is still a compliment as far as we're concerned. On the flip, things take a more optimistic turn on the lo-slung, slo-mo, feel good emotions of "Can I Get Ahhm".

Review: If you're familiar with dBridge's Exit Records you've almost definitely already bought this one. If you're not, let's just say the prolific producer and label boss, best known for drum 'n' bass although never restricted to genre, heads up an imprint that's also at the cutting edge of broken rave-y noises, and has again struck gold with this one. Whether you'd prefer to categorise contents as electro, leftfield breaks or half-beat experiments is down to personal choice and how tracks are read on a personal level. When all is said and done, each of those descriptions is accurate, and everything is defined by a futuristic atmosphere that seems to take ears and bodies into the cosmos. Equally effective on dancefloors as they are bed or front room, here be next level stuff.

It's a long time since people used to upload songs to MySpace, but that's just what this pair did in their early days and they have continued to work together ever since. This album is a showcase of improvised freestyles and beat making from Brother May and Micachu, all of which was made on a DIY set up in kitchens and bedrooms. That homemade aesthetic characterises the album and make it a mini-modern day classic.

Review: Benjamin Brunn and Dave Wheels are old studio buddies, having worked together on and off since 2006. "2000", though, is their most ambitious joint project yet: a collaborative album for Sushitech that offers up breezy, melodious and cheery fusions of heady dub techno, gentle electronica, chugging sofa-friendly haziness and glitchy late night hypnotism. It's an interesting blend but one that certainly hits the spot. Highlights include the horizontal pulse of "Orainge", the wonderfully hypnotic after-hours throb of "Iratamoto (Version)", the bold and sun-kissed undulations of "In The Club" and the pie-eyed warmth of "Waldeck".

Cat: HDB 120. Rel: 14 Jun 19
  1. Claustro (5:44)
  2. State Forest (7:53)
Review: While he's offered up the occasional remix, William "Burial" Bevan has been rather quiet of late. In fact, this two-tracker marks his first original material for almost two years. Lead cut "Claustro" is an unexpectedly up-tempo dancefloor affair - a sweet and sticky chunk of future-garage that sees Bevan wrap sugary female vocal snippets, spacey chords and bubbly analogue electronics around snappy two-step beats - drenched in vinyl crackle and tape hiss - and a rock solid bassline. It will raise a few eyebrows given his previous work but nevertheless sounds like a summer anthem in waiting. Bevan returns to familiar territory on flipside cut "State Forest", a ghostly, field recording-laden ambient excursion where pedal steel style motifs slowly rise above opaque electronics.

Subtemple (10")
Cat: HDB 108. Rel: 23 May 17
  1. Subtemple (7:18)
  2. Beachfires (9:51)
Review: Naturally, there's been plenty of hype surrounding this new Hyperdub 10", which features Burial indulging his often-discussed ambient influences. It's a typically creepy and ghostly affair, with the lack of beats - if not rhythmic elements - only serving to amplify the shadowy producer's impeccable sound design and brilliant use of manipulated field recordings. A-side "Subtemple" is particularly paranoid in tone, featuring as it does chilling melody loops, curious vocal samples, looped vinyl crackle and all manner of layered background noise. Flipside "Beachfires" is, if anything, even more dystopian, with Burial basing the action around the kind of pulsing chords that gust back and forth like an autumnal breeze.
