Review: We were first made aware of Lack's music thanks to Rabih Beaini's excellent Morphine imprint - always a source of sonic quality - and the US artist has begun to catch the attention of other, like-minded label heads wanting something a little different in their catalogue. Labelled as 'non-music' or simply 'experimental', Lack's music is hard to pin down and define in words, but that is precisely what draws us closer to it. On this EP for Hot Releases, each one of these four magnetic slices of industrial-minded fuzz lives in a world of its own, suspended in mid-air by intricate twists of metallic tape, eerie background noises and a distinctive 'dub' feel. Let's put it this way, if King Tubby and Throbbing Gristle had ever met, this is what their minds could have looked like in the same studio...

Review: Stephane Laporte's Fourrure Sounds, released to critical acclaim back in 2014, was something of a lo-fi triumph. Recorded entirely at night, with a variety of old analogue synths and a battered old tape recorder, it saw the Domotic producer pay tribute to experimental French electronic music of the 1970s. This follow-up is almost as good, with Laporte drifting between throbbing, percussive fare (see "Dispositions"), Black Zone Myth Chant style madness ("Ossature"), fine cosmic workouts ("Tunnel"), and blissful, new age-inspired ambient concoctions ("Timre"). It's arguably a little more expansive in scope than its' predecessor, but no less entertaining for it. In fact, it's another must-check record from Antinote.

  2. Warsaw Street (Scuba remix) (8:21)
  3. Loose Life (Julien Bracht remix) (5:53)
  4. Remember (Thom Alt-J remix)) (3:31)
Review: There's been a fair amount of excitable online chatter about moody synthesizer fetishists Lea Porcelain, a duo from Frankfurt whose work sits somewhere between vintage minimal wave and clanking, modular electronica. Here, the pair has allowed a quartet of remixes to make merry with some of their most name-checked tunes. The headline attraction is arguably Scuba's alternately hypnotic, melodious and trippy broken techno take on "Warsaw Street", though Julien Bracht's doom-laden, lo-fi breakbeat interpretation of 2015 track "Loose Life" is arguably even stronger. Those looking for the ultimate in beat-less, wall-of-sound moodiness should check out Thom Alt J's inspired remix of "Remember".

  4. Saving Grace (5:26)
Review: Damn! Dark Entries are on a roll! Their latest reissue is of Scotland's Thomas Leer, an early 80's independent artist who recorded "Private Plane" in his bedroom using an extremely limited set-up...the prototypical '80s experimental kid! The tune is dreary, funky and on the abstract side all at the same time, but our favourite is actually "International" thanks to its wonky groove, driving percussion stabs and bursts of distorted jazz flute. On the B-side there's also "Saving Grace", a more poppy affair in that inimitable 80's Karate Kid flair...highly recommended, a 12" worthy of a reissue.

Headcrash (clear vinyl 12" in hand-printed folded sleeve + insert limited to 300 copies)
Cat: VLEK 25. Rel: 04 Apr 17
  1. IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (14:36)
  2. Uncaught TypeError (11:45)
Review: Brussels-based sound designer Yann Leguay has spent much of his career creating experimental electronic pieces that challenge people's perceptions. Whether or not Headcrash, his first release on the admirable Vlek label, achieves this admirable aim is debatable. It is, though, a rather mesmerizing and mind-altering record (and we're not just talking about the distinctive, handmade sleeve art). Near 15-minute A-side "IRQL Not Less Or Equal" sets the tone via slowly shifting drone textures, heartbeat style percussion hits, effected analogue electronics, modular noises, and a smattering of atmospheric field recordings. "Uncaught TypeError", a more cluttered affair that combines droning textures and creepy notes with densely layered, almost rhythmic cracks and pops, completes a deliciously out-there and evocative package.

Review: Second Circle's latest mini-album comes from the previously unheard Giuseppe Leonardi, a "young Viennese musician" whose heady, synthesizer-heavy style is reminiscent of some of the curious obscurities reissued on parent label Music From Memory. While experimental in nature - think skewed combinations of lo-fi analogue keyboards, sparse and dusty drum machine hits and all manner of manipulated voices - each of the five tracks is pleasingly melodious. Combined with a range of left-of-centre influences from the early-to-mid '80s (think new wave ambient, new wave and British post-punk dub), it makes for a heady and arresting collection of tracks that actually gets better with each successive listen.

Review: While there is barely any solid information as to the identity and ideals behind the Lokal Affair project, this is the sort of material that speaks for itself, and one which has successfully tapped into the current state of affairs in the electronic game. This badass EP lands on the increasingly relevant Boomarm Nation, and carries three killer infusions of cryptic pseudo house and ethnic rhythms for the more open-minded DJ. If there was such a thing as 'small-room tools' then these would be it; watch out for the Alter Echo remix on the flip, too, as it's a rather voracious affair for the dance. Big ol' tip here!

Review: Lolina is Inga Copeland aka London based Russian songstress Alina Astrova, who was formerly part of defunct cult favourite Hype Williams. On these three short tracks she sings out of tune over dirty grime beats on "Lolita" or "Plot Twist" and delivers an electro-infused indie-pop ditty on "Keep It Movin". Like previous records 'Live In Paris' and 'RELAXIN' With Lolina', this has been self-released. Hype Williams were a music and art group best known for consisting of UK-born artist Dean Blunt and collaborated with Copeland between 2007 and 2012 in this self-described 'relay project' which passed between the artists every five years.

Review: After 19 years in the game, techno veteran Jens "Lowtec" Kuhn is still going strong. While he's recently been in a nostalgic mood - as reissues of early material prove - Kuhn is still capable of producing fresh, high quality material. There's much to enjoy about this first EP for new Malmo label Blundar, from the loud tape hiss, spooky melodies and weirdo ambient dub intent of "Track 2", to the moody, early Autechre throb of Skam-ish closer "Track 4". Dancefloor-minded thrills come in the shape of hypnotic opener "Track 1" - all unsettling, one-note chords, restless rhythms and distant electronics - and the hard-to-pigeonhole madness of the schizophrenic "Track 3".

Review: Stroboscopic Artefacts head honcho Lucy on Samurai Horo? You better believe it! Recorded live to tape in his Berlin studio, these four experimental soundscapes work together in a perfect continuum. "Eat" helps you surrender to the void, assisted by fascinating modular synth textures and field recordings creating another auditory world. "Drink" shows more restraint with its beatless, reductionist groove covered in the just the right amount of dust and rust, gradually building in tension and resonance over its eight minute duration. But it's the immersive sci-fi aesthetic of closer "Relax" which really nails it; featuring sonar blips, hypnotic/ evolving pads and and some of the most sublime synth textures you'll ever hear.

  4. U$b Schtick & Turnt Burial (9:08)
Review: Madteo is not praised enough for his contribution to the modern dance sound. The Italian-born NYC 'insider', as he likes to call himself, has put out less music over the last 2-3 years, clearly preferring to keep himself out of the scene. But, this doesn't come as a surprise to us seeing as he's always resided on the outskirts of what looms in the dance circles. Scientrysts lands on his own imprint, M.A.D.T.E.O., and the release sees the producer head back to his shift club mode, a sound which was first championed by Rabih Beaini's Morphine Doser. "Scientrysts & Errorist" gets 2 mixes, the 'Stomp' version bangs out heavy drums over hazy, echoing sonics, while the 'Club' mix picks up the pace and lays down a handsome portion of dusty percussion. On the flip, "U$b Schtick & Turnt Burial" lands with the minimal hardware fuzz of the 'Psy' mix first, before delivering a sparse selection of bass waves on the original cut. The boss is back to his best...

Review: The latest intriguing electronic exploration from Riccardo Schirro's Gravity Graffiti label comes from Maledetti, a previously unheard studio hook-up between Schirro and label regular Lamusa. While many of the label's previous releases have been dreamy, melodious and unashamedly loved-up, Ritmi is a far stranger and more clandestine affair. Check, for example, the paranoid chords, manipulated vocal samples and feverish African drums of opener "Sentire", the low-slung, post punk-influenced Afro-dub of "Essere" and the wonky, "Music For 18 Musicians"-goes-to-Bali humidity of "Creare". That's re-invented as "Ricreare" (geddit?) by Yoshinori Hayashi, whose fuzzy, loose and groovy version sits somewhere between Afro-tinged jazz-funk and eccentric deep house.

  3. Boteco (7:11)
Review: Although Portugal's Malvito has only released a handful of EPs thus far, it is clear from his use of melodies and beats that this guy thinks way beyond the house / techno framework. He launches his own label to kick off 2018, Berimbau Discos, an outlet for his dextrous strain of neo-minimalism. The opener "Syzlack" is a harmonic glide through vast planes of bleeps, stretching the beats over rough textures, while "King Of Cool" features Zenner in what is a wild, sporadic attack of drums and jazzy coolness, layered with a majestic dub feel. Last but not least, "Boteco" bounces its fuzzy analogue drums over a sticky wall of tribal percussion, calling to the darkest, deepest depths of the jungle. An artist (and label) to watch out for this year...
