Review: EMG's Experiential Learning label has been MIA for a while but, as we've come to appreciate, that's exactly what we love and respect about the label. The Relative Records co-founder, the second in man in command being Juno favourite John Swing, is an enigmatic figure who has preferred to do things his own way over the last five years. Neither him or Swing have ventured outside their own labels, opting instead to create and evolve their own sound, one which has become synonymous with quality. This label is reserved for the odder, more leftfield side of EMG's productions, and this latest effort is most certainly the best one yet. 255 spans over 6 tunes, and from cavernous folds of distorted noise, to pseudo techno and glitchy, analog experiments, we're into everything about it. Techno-not-techno seems to be the right way to describe this majestic voyage into sound. Warmly recommended. Be quick, these are limited, and will go!

Review: Yu Asaeda's been putting out a whole range of quality, bass-centric sounds under the name ENA since the late 2000s, but these have come out on a rather sporadic basis. Appearances for the infamous 7even Recordings was followed by material on Samurai Horo, the excellent Hidden Hawaii and, more recently, the Samurai label's offshoot, Horo. Divided: Body is so much more than a mere 'bass' EP, and it actually manages to veer off into some pretty strange and imperceptible sounds that remind us of the material emanating from the PAN consortium. For instance, the opening "11th Divided" manages to create a raw, loose groove out of fractured synth sounds, which is followed up nicely by the swarming drones operating in the higher ends of "12th Divided". Over on the flip, "13th Divided" launches a subtle yet hefty groove made up of what sound like bass pops made from a monophonic synth, which leaves "14th Divided" to linger in its dreary pool of fuzzy drones and washed-up sonics. A massive, merited TIP!

Review: As part of Mura Oka, Louis Vial has already been spotted on the excellent Latency label as well as delivering a solo EP to Collapsing Market earlier this year. He once again dons his Eszaid cape on this release for the equally fine Meandyou stable, tapping into the labels predilection for obscure variations on the fringes of house and techno. "777,7" is especially captivating in its insistent cyclical minimalism, drilling straight for the subconscious, while "Eyeless Mannekin" sets adrift in aqueous climes for a proper floatation tank dub techno immersion. Using subtlety as a powerful tool, Eszaid ably matches up to the quality that has come before on Meandyou.

  4. Fabric - "Pink Grid" (7:09)
Review: Manchester's meandyou. collective take their time over releases, averaging just over a 12" per year. Here they kick off 2016 with another collaborative EP, full of drowsy deep house, crackling techno and tipsy, world-weary ambience. With label conspirator Herron otherwise engaged, it falls to Workshopper Even Tuell to kick things off with the slowly unfurling new age chords, blazed vocal samples and sparse-but-chunky deep house groove of "Boys Truth". Sul "Does It For Andy" on the creepy, discordant dark world ambient track of the same name, before Sensu brings back the beats on the hypnotic, experimental dubby techno shuffle of "Sigmon". Finally, Fabric lays back and lights something fragrant on the similarly dub techno influenced, metallic IDM-goes-ambient of "Pink Grid".

  4. F-on - "Alpengluhen" (10:50)
Review: Up to this point, the only artists to have surfaced out of the Antimatter label have been F-on and Bule. This is is no way a criticism. In fact, we like it this way, and are secretly hoping that these two minds keep on coming up with this dope material. That's because the Antimatter sound is very much their own; it's a strange and singular style of electronic dance music that doesn't pretend to be a part of any particular sub-genre. Moreover, although the two don't actually collaborate on these tunes, they've successfully managed to conjure a similar sound to one another, an abstract and temperamental shade of house with a vividly loose edge. From F-on's "Take Care Of Yourself" through to Bule's "Photon", we're taken on a journey through mid-tempo beats that have been utterly engulfed in oceans of vast and endless pads circling in mid-air. It almost feels like dub-techno, but it's still one step behind. One place lower in the evolutionary food chain. They're a bunch of head-spinners, and we're sure that we'll see more of these two in the near future.

Straight & Arrow (heavyweight vinyl 12" picture disc)
Cat: ZEN 12337X. Rel: 28 Feb 13
  1. Straight & Arrow (original)
  2. Straight & Arrow (Four Tet remix)
Review: Avid record buyers should be more than familiar with "Straight & Arrow" a pleasant, bumping excursion through warbling vocal edits and soft brushed beats from Falty DL. Not only was it a highlight of his recently released Hardcourage LP, but Ninja Tune have already issued it in single format replete with a diverse clutch of remixes from Gold Panda, Four Tet and ballroom duo Mike Q and Divoli S'vere. This picture disc edition is clearly aimed at the fetishistic Drew Lustman completists out there, weighing in at a hefty 180g and brandishing some superlative graphics from the distinct visual agency La Boca. It also houses the seven minutes of dewy eyed, slowly percolating techno that was the remix from the irrepressible Four Tet on the flip.

  1. Nimoy (9:16)
  2. Return (6:04)
  3. The Hour (8:56)
Review: Fhloston Paradigm might seem like a shadowy name from some bedroom producer somewhere in London, but in case you didn't know, it's actually King Britt's alias (almost) strictly for Hyperdub. The UK producer has produced some of the best house and broken beat of the early 2000s, and he still remains a cult hero, a dangerously underrated artist from the commercial world. This newer sound contains aspects of his old work, but we can hear experimenting a lot more with the sonics and arrangements, so much so that "Nimoy" is a veritable genreless track, spitting out sick beats and waves of bass from all angles without any care in the world. "Return" is a sublime synth excursion without even a shadow of a kick drum, and "The Hour" follows suit with a mystical sea of warm harmonics and structured pad patterns. Recommended.

Review: A new Hidden Hawaii release has the ability to get our taste buds going and our mouths salivating from the first moment that we hear those warm glows of echo hit our ear drums. This is particularly true when it's coming from the likes of FLXK1 and DB1, two relatively unknown entities up to this day, and a pair of artists who truly understand the essence of dub techno. From the subaqueous bleeps and mechanical drums of "Track 1", through to the hollow, washed-out drones of "Track 2", and even contorted breakbeats of "Track 3" and "Track 4", this EP has everything you need for a full meditation session, whether that be in a club or on your headphones. No Apple buds, though, please.

Review: Post-drum and bass grey area explorers Ena (Japan) and FLXK1 from Berlin (aka Hidden Hawaii head honcho Felix K) team up for some sinister, industrial edged sound design excursions through the darklands. It bears all the hallmarks of what these two modern auteurs of dark experimental and deconstructed dub techno have brought to the table before: well executed metal textures, the most haunting and subversive of drones (sure!) but overall the most terrifying and polarising soundscapes this side of hell. With this type of music gaining a large following and many jumping on the bandwagon, it takes just one listen to this to see why these two are at the top of the game and raise the bar exceptionally high. For those that dare: this is essential listening.

  2. Amaniyak Kree
Review: Fountain Of Chaos kicks off the Inextinguishable Fire label in style, purportedly transmitting from an undisclosed woodland location with a mission to bring you transcendental neo-pagan ritual music for the 21st century. "Primitive Megalopolis" definitely takes its cues from the likes of Jon Hassell with its rich, detailed sound bed of delicate pattering percussion, occasional flute breaths and slow, meditative rhythmic lurch. "Amaniyak Tree" flips the script with a fiery run of percussion that feels more like a Latin carnival throwdown, all tumbling ethnic instrumentation strapped to a discoid propulsion. It's a record of two very excellent, very different halves.

  2. Locomotion (Mordant Music DLR reMMix)
  3. Locomotion (Ghost Train version)
Review: The enigmatic and incorrigible Mordant Music throws another ace onto the table, and this time it's in the form of a tasty new Ep by newcomer Donald Fraser. "Locomotion", as the title suggests, is a rhythmic bounce of liquid synths and sporadic beats made for those with an open mind. Mordant Music himself steps up for a remix of the same track, and the dude completely blows it to smithereens by adding in a growling bassline and a whole array of metallic synth trickery. Finally, the Ghost Train version sounds more like the original except the structure and sounds are now even more contorted. Another winner from the nutty UK imprint.

Review: Mohammad Reza Mortazavi is the perfect companion to Burnt Friedman's steely, minimalistic shades of broken dub techno. The Iranian percussionist comes as a surprise addition to the Nonplace catalogue, but he certainly makes for an even more cerebral drumming experience than the already off-kilter world of Friedman's tunes. Both the A-side's mixes of "Yek" are just on the right side of dark, combining Eastern influences together with colder, more industrial executions from the West. On the B-side, we have a similarly frenetic experience, where metallic drums collide with deep baselines and polyrhythmic flows spanning the full circle. Well, this might just be our favourite Nonplace yet!

  5. Nolan (Regis Self Medicating edit)
Review: With Ben Frost's Aurora album amongst many people's end of year lists, Mute draw together a selection of remixers for this Variant 12" whose collective reputation is every bit as impressive. You really aren't ready for this line up. First up, you got Evian Christ's broken, pseudo-bass version; next, Dutch E Germ transforms the original into a broken, swinging bundle of percussion; while HTRK delivers a fine concoction of steely drum machine licks and kicks on their slower remix. On the flip it's all about the floor, where Kangding Ray calls all the ravers and dishes out the techno servings on his mutation of "No Sorrows", whereas Downwards boss and Birmingham techno pioneer Regis turns up with a hollow, muscled roller for the late hours. All in all, a pretty banging affair.

Review: While they might have some catching up to do in terms of competing with the likes of Leipzig greats Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup, the DUR crew are certainly here to stay. Their first three releases have all been revelational, and have finally brought some new artists to the scene, so we've welcomed number 4 in the series with open arms and, importantly, open minds. Beate Furcht and Detlef Diamant both debut with these six 'dance' experiments, a curious collection of rhythmic grooves which never quite unfold into what your typical Saturday night raver would call 'club music'. In our world, that is a good thing, and it leaves plenty of room for these two newcomers to build their names from the ground up. Tracks 1 to 3 are rich in movement, and while they certainly travel across plenty of different genres and moods, all three of them lean towards the more cavernous end of the scale. On the flip, things are just as loose and hazy, with "Track 4" retaining that dubwise outlook amid its off-kilter waves, and "Track 6" providing a scintillating flow of percussive downtempo that feels right in all sorts of ways. What a release!

Saturnus (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: KOMPAKT 384. Rel: 01 May 18
  1. Saturnus (Ghost Vision Theme) (13:02)
  2. Zuul Passage (11:28)
Review: Given that Ghost Vision is the combined work of Thomas "Cagedbaby" Gandey and Psychemagik man Danny McLewin, you'd expect this 12" - their second in as many weeks following a debut outing on Love on the Rocks - to be pretty darn hot. It is, of course, with the duo serving up two deliciously epic chunks of kosmiche-inspired hypnotism. A-side "Saturnas (Ghost Vision Theme)" is particularly potent, with exotic synthesizer lines, spacey chords and bubbling TB-303 acid lines gently rising above a chugging, locked-in groove. "Zuul Passage" is an altogether more languid and meandering affair rich in evocative electronics, tear-jerking synthesizer melodies and sparse-but-solid vintage drum machine beats. It's also really rather beautiful.

Review: Paris outpost Syncrophone facilitate this wondrous production partnership between Versatile boss Gilb'R and Jorge Velez, the New Jersey based artist whose fine music has graced the likes of Rush Hour and L.I.E.S. in recent months. Information on how the two came together is a bit thin on the ground, but it's evident Cohen and Velez have an intuitive studio understanding on the basis of their two original tracks here. "Du Lundi" is rich and playful house with skittering percussive touches and a definite sense of textural narrative. This is a production that breathes life as opposed to simply treading rhythmic water. It's blessed by a fine rework from Willie Burns that has set opener written all over it, whilst the other original production from Gilb'R and Jorge, "Drone", features the percussive skills of Shadi Khries.
